Need help to reinstall the SoftPaq display/video driver or CCC

Hi everyone,

My name is Julie, a very junior ASP.net programmer-analyst in Montreal, Canada and I need help with ATI’s CCC and video drivers on my personal laptop. sorry in advance for the inconvenience of perhaps having posted this in the wrong place... first time in a forum of any kind, and I really wanted to "speak" to Erocker as I read this thread many many times forwards and backwards. I really tried to make this an easy and comprehensive read, despite my confusion and anger and please remember that at this point I need that someone tries this with me patiently.

Problem/Issue:

For two (2) years I had the ATI Catalyst Control Center & HydraVision both working fine (version(s) unknown) on my machine and recently I thought it may be a good idea to update drivers & CCC after having installed Skyrim and found it a bit choppy. OK! Ok! I know my system is a bit old, but I thought: “Hey girl, if this old thing can run other Bethesda games such as Fallout III why not push it a bit further…right? “. So I huffed, and puffed and blew CCC down along with my video driver . My goal is to be able to update my video driver using the one included in HP SoftPaq: sp45261.exe from version: 8.635.0.0 to: 8.635.0.0 A, if possible, as well as being able to get the best CCC and HydraVision versions that my system can handle and make it all work.

No matter what I try, I cannot successfully reinstall the SoftPaq display/video driver nor does the CCC install properly as the driver version remains the same and the c:\ATI Technologies folder remains empty after installation thus CCC does not install at all!!! After any installation process I get the following message: “Installation complete (warnings occurred during installation). View log for details.” These logs at the very least, clearly leave something to be desired.

Below you will find technical details and a list of solutions I tried from various forums and problems I keep running into. If it helps, I also made screenshots of everything I am talking about (force of habit).

Note: This softPaq unpacks into the default folder C:\SwSetup\SP45261 and then tries to install in folder C\Program Files\ATI and in: C\Program Files\ATI Technologies as it contains some version of CCC and uses Catalyst Install Manager version 03.00.0732. It does install neither driver nor Catalyst.


What I’ve tried so far:

Note: Since I have Visual Studio 2010, Dreamweaver and other programming tools installed, I am somewhat concerned with messing around with the Microsoft .Net Framework versions and/or the C++ redistributable versions as prescribed in a number of forums.

Okay, so without further ado, and in all possible combinations known to man, here is what was done:

• Put UAC in lowest state
• Uninstalled some of the C++ Redistributable files
• Installed/Uninstalled/Reinstalled various versions of DirectX
• Uninstalled video driver (upon reboot, Windows reinstalls it from a hidden backup as it detects new hardware – this is out of my control)
• Attempted Installation/Uninstallation/Reinstallation of many versions of CCC either as complete packages or suites separately – ATI Technologies folder is always empty .The only thing that does install is the ATI Catalyst Install Manager
• Attempted selective install from SETUP.exe in the expanded Catalyst installer folder (C:\ATI\Support\XX-X_vista64_win7_64_dd\Bin64)
• Changed WorkaroundInstall=false to WorkaroundInstall=true in file: InstallManager.cfg located in folder: C:\ATI\Support\XX-X_vista64_win7_64_dd\Config
• Deleted all ATI Folders found in C:\, C:\Program files and C:\Program files (x86)
• Ran the Registry Editor and deleted ATI/ACE related entries found in HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software and in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE
• Made sure that C:\Users\(User)\AppData\Local\ATI nor C:\Users\DADA\AppData\Local\ACE do not exist
• Made sure that C:\Users\(User)\AppData\Roaming\ATI nor C:\Users\DADA\AppData\Roaming\ACE do not exist
• Emptied the Prefetch and temp folders in windows.
• Hunted for Public Token Keys in C:\Windows\assembly and hunted for 90ba9c70f846762e in vain
• Hunted for Catalyst Application Profiles (never found any… is that right?)
• Disabled Norton 360 and Malwarebytes
• Used Piriform’s CCleaner v3.24.1850 (64-bit) to delete registry keys and fix registry issues
• Found and Used Guru3D’s Driver Sweeper 3.2.0 in Safe Mode to delete files related to the display drivers
• Used a free version of Treexy’s Driver Fusion 1.3.0 in Safe Mode to delete files related to the display drivers
• Used Mobility Modder.Net v1.2.1.0 from www.hardwareheaven.com (formally: www.driverheaven.net) and it doesn’t seem to do much… perhaps it cannot mod some of ATI’s newest releases
• Rebooted 50 000 times


Conclusion:

After crying in rage and frustration I went to church, promised to convert, and tried praying to the sun, the moon and Steve Jobs but nothing helped.

Please help anyone I am going nuts!!!

Laptops are a bit iffy with drivers. Try to use one from the HP website if you can, corresponding with your HP laptop and graphics card model.

Or if you are confident about replacing .inf files, go get a driver from here: http://forums.laptopvideo2go.com/topic/27959-amd-catalyst-111-8812-mobility-whql/

With desktop AMD's this is not necessary but as I said mobility (ie laptop AMD) cards are iffy and it wouldn't hurt to try this procedure before installing the new driver (Just make sure you have a safe copy of your current graphics driver. That way if the new one doesn't work, you can re-install the old one easily without having to search all over the net for it.):

- Go into Control Panel / Programs and uninstall your present driver.

- Then get Driver Sweeper (free) to remove any traces of your old driver.

- This way you should get rid of all the old driver and any file remnants, leaving your laptop clean to install the new driver.

- Install the new driver.

I would start with using system restore to get back to when the CCC worked correctly. Then we can upgrade the CCC if it indeed needs to be updated. I think AMD would advise to use cat 12.6 for the 4000 series gpu's, but with a lot of laptops you have to use their CCC package.

Don't know if it helps but I've found the beta drivers from AMD's site will work or laptops that normally will only let you use manufacturer specific drivers.

First off, Thank-you Black Panther for a quick reply… I was told that you guys are fast and good with this stuff.

Before I run off to laptopvideo2go.com thru the link you sent me, I just wanted to clarify or rather reiterate a few things as well as apologize for posting such a monster of a post.
1. Even if I uninstall the driver (version 8.635.0.0) for my display/video card, upon rebooting the computer, Windows 7 will detect “new hardware” and find the same driver and reinstall it. This backup driver is somewhere in the bowels of the HDD - I don’t know where exactly and I don’t know how to prevent/stop this or should I? ...the point is: When I use Driver Sweeper™, it cripples the video card driver and after rebooting, it all comes back. Perhaps you mean to say that I do not need to reboot after using Driver Sweeper??? I shall give that a try.
2. HP released a video/display driver update (version 8.635.0.0 A) for my card in the form of a SoftPaq (sp45261.exe) back in 2009, however it is bundled with an unknown version of CCC (unknown because I can’t get it to install), although, I can tell you the version of the Catalyst Install Manager which is 03.00.0732 (Goggling that didn’t get me much info). I cant get just the driver, HP only provides the Softpaq and screw you if you cant install the Catalyst nor the driver.

Thanks-you both for your interest in my issue and your advice is much appreciated.
I do however have a few points and a few questions:

1. DRDNA: A system restore simply isn’t feasible at this time as I installed CCC + driver (part of HP’s SoftPaq sp45261) originally in early 2010. Reverting the computer back to that state would be a disaster for my work as I have too many things going on, on this computer at this time i.e. programming projects in Visual Studio, Silverlight, SQL Server 2008, etc. I cannot afford (for my job’s sake to have this computer out of commission or risk losing the functionality of a project and/or losing software configurations  anyone who ever configured SQL Server or tweaked IIS knows how hard and complicated it can be and I am not reliving that again, lol). In other circumstances, it is a great idea, just not practical for me right now.

2. DRDNA & Batou1986: Okay so according to the release notes from AMD concerning CCC 12.6 it does support AMD Mobility Product Families just not the HD 4200 Series (or maybe they forgot to include it in the list). If you guys know something about this please tell me and also keep in mind that I wasn’t even able to install CCC 12.4, 10.6, 9.X and many other versions because the installer simply will not write in the c:\Program Files\ATI Technologies folder, which is where, I assume, the Catalyst/HydraVision files should get installed in.
I’m going to keep going with Black Panther’s plan for now and if his idea fails, I will surely look into doing a clean install of CCC 12.6, who knows, maybe it will work.

Your laptop like most laptops will not run the official WHQL drivers from AMD, only the ones from HP for whatever reason, likely to narrow down problems for tech support.
I think most of your problems would be solved if you tried 12.4 or 12.6 beta drivers.

For some reason the beta drivers will install on most OEM laptops where the official WHQL will not install on systems with mobile cards from OEM's.

Good morning everyone,

As I mentioned yesterday, I went ahead and followed Black Panther’s advice and downloaded AMD Catalyst 11.1 (8.812) Mobility WHQL from laptopvideo2go.com. Albeit very few instructions and no mention of replacing/editing .inf files, yours truly proceeded with the installation and I must report that, indeed, CCC was installed successfully despite receiving “Installation complete (warnings occurred during installation). View log for details”, thus, I decided to check what was what and here is what I found:

According to the device manager, the video driver was not updated (I guess this is only part of the SoftPaq offered by HP *sigh*) and the ATI High Definition Audio Device reports a crippled driver (See below image)

Any ideas? Perhaps CCC 12.6 could solve this? Although I am pretty sure it will not install just like the other versions from AMD’s support website and again, Batou1986, according to the release notes, my card is not supported by CCC 12.6 (see pic below) although 12.4 seems to be but that did not install at all...
