Honestly if the mobo you're using isn't having a problem. I don't see a reason to upgrade. But if you are looking to upgrade, there are some nice deals to be had.

AM3 wasn't out when your motherboard was released but bios updates have allowed the support of the processors. The nice thing about amd boards is that even boards that are 2 years old or so can support the newest chips.

is the x3 720 much better then the x2 550?

cause it isnt that much more so i might go with the 720

I honestly think it is the best gaming processor on a budget. But I have to admit I haven't tried the 550 BE.

My 720BE has pushed 4GHZ and running very cool. They don't push much more heat than the chips you're referring to. Mine is very happy sitting at 3.6 with 1.47 vcore. Loads at 38° with a Xiggy HDT-S1283.

Motherboard doesn't support the 140w processors like the 965.

I say go for the 720 - the one in my home pc is pushing 3.7 on stock voltages and with a decent midrange air cooler is ~42-45 degrees in most useage scenarios.
