Green is for lower power consumption which translates to a slower hard drive.

There's a grey WD drive?

I have (well had because I sold it) the 640GB Black and it was nice and quiet, an overall good drive. It's a mechanical hard drive and it worked like one.

Between a WD Black and a Seagate 7200.12 you will notice no difference. Get what is least expensive.
