Need overclocking guidance

1st I would like to say gr8 forum
been eagerly reading a lot of posts over the last couple days and am very impressed...

Now to the Begging bit lol

Sorry my 1st post is a HELP post...

basically here is my new rig (arriving today)

Intel Core 2 Duo E4300 1.86ghz Socket 775 FSB800 2MB Cache
Kingston 2GB KIT (2X1GB) DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 CL5 Non Ecc 1.8V

XFX 7800GT 256MB DDR3 Dual DVI VIVO PCI-E (Older card from sons system)

I have no clear Idea on how to over clock at all ...
so I guess I’m asking for some direction please..

1. Is the system a reasonable spec
2. Where can I find an Idiots Guide to OC's (Laymen’s Terms)

Your best bet would be to google the name of your mobo follwed by the word overclock, that'll hopefully bring up some reviews/ other users experiences/ issues with the board and possibly even board/ cpu combo. I'm an AMD man so I have no experience with intel tweaking, sorry!

Nice new rig, it should have a lot of potential

Firstly, have a read through this: http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?t=22998

Basically the key is to keep an eye on temperatures, and don't get too greedy. Stability testing is essential! A properly overclocked PC should be as stable as stock!

Here's a few little proggies for ya:

Great program, basically, set all the standard settings in the bios, and you can increase the fsb in windows with that. Kinda like clockgen, but more reliable. If you go too far, don't panic. It's only a temporary overclocking tool used to experiment before deciding on your final settings. Restarting your computer will go back to the settings in the bios.

Good for verifying frequencies and memory timings. Don't trust the voltage readings though.

My favourite stability testing program. First set this program going, either on the cpu test, or memory test, then increase fsb slowly using SetFSB until it starts detecting errors, at which point back it down a bit until your computer is stable.

Just a note, most moderators on TPU would advise you to use a more specific Thread title like "noob needs help overclocking", theyr often kind enough to change it for you.

forgot one program, CoreTemp.

It reads the temperature from the cpu die itself, so it's by far the most accurate temperature monitor. I only trust this program, as it shows the 'real' temps.


Ok, now onto the bios:

Go to the 'Advanced' section, and under 'AI Overclocking,' choose Manual. You should then see a screen similar to this:

CPU Frequency is the FSB setting. It should be @ 200MHz by default with your cpu.

Here's how it works: CPU Frequency = FSB x Multiplier. The multiplier for your cpu is 9x. 200MHz x9 =1800MHz

So by raising the FSB, you increase the cpu frequency. Unfortunately, it also increases the ram frequency.

DRAM Frequency is the memory frequency. It works by setting an fsb:memory 'divider'. The values it gives you are the DDR (double data rate) value. You half this to get the true frequency. You will get the best performance with a '1:1' or 'synchronous' divider. By which i mean, the dram frequency you select would be 2x the fsb. (2x because it's the ddr value). You can see in my picture, i have my fsb set at 425MHz, and the memory at 850Mhz. This is 1:1. The other frequencies it gives you use different dividers, like 4:5, 3:4, 2:3 and so on. The idea is that you use these dividers to keep the memory from going too far, or from going too slow.

Ok, try these settings:

To begin with, leave the last three voltages at 'auto'. You only need to start increasing these when you have a very high overclock, and the motherboard is causing stability problems. Set the cpu voltage to 1.35v to begin with, and the memory voltage to 2.0v.

CPU Frequency: 266mhz
DRAM Frequency: 533mhz (set it lower than default so there's room for software overclocking)

Performance mode: Turbo (lol )
PCI-Express Frequncy: 100MHz
PCI Clock sync... 33.33MHz.

Before you set these, go into the chiset options. You should see something like this:

Set the following:

CAS: 5
RAS: 5
RAS - CAS: 5
TRAS: 15
Write recovery: 4

disable all options below it, they only reduce overclocking potential.

Ok, last port of call before saving:

Set anything to do with AI Quiet, or Q-Fan to 'disable'. You will notice your computer got a bit louder, but it's better to have good airflow at this point. You can adjust fan speeds later.

Save the Settings, and exit.

Check your hardware:

You can now boot into windows, and check what you've just done with CPU-Z. Also, open CoreTemp, and watch the cpu temperatures while you run the CPU stresstest with Orthos.

If you're happy with how it's going, you can then open SetFSB and begin increasing the FSB while running Orthos on the mixed test. Keep an eye on CoreTemp at all times!

If you can go quite a long way with SetFSB, try increasing it in the bios, so it boots with the settings.

If you get stuck, just say so, don't struggle without knowing what you're doing

Well managed to top out stable at Core Speed 3ghz Bus Speed 333.3Mhz under load
Multiplyer drops from x9 down to x6 when idleing

so once again many thx all for the help I have learnt loads

Looking good.

The multiplier is dropping because of Intel Speedstep. You can dissable this under the cpu configuration in the bios. IEST or something.
