Interesting stuff. I bet these chips OC like mad to. I am thinking with some good cool and a lot of voltage you would be able to achieve a stable 100% OC.

I don't really get these chips. Same chipset as i7, lower specs but higher price than i7. Why wouldn't a business just use i7? Wouldn't they get more for their money? Are these especially designed for working in groups w/ each other, different instruction sets, what's the deal? Core 2 xeons were priced and specced similarly to their desktop bretheren, these seem out of whack.

but you see the 920 is 130W heat while most of the xeons are 60-95W and have a higher QPI path.

anyway, no one of those xeons would work with our normal x58 boards, only on server ones

just checked the cpu support list of some mobos and the biostar nor the asrock support them.

Its probably as simple as bios update with the new cpu microcodes. Physically the cpus are the same as the consumer i7 chips.

These new Xeons are amazing. They are rated at 60W-95W. Very manageable heat output, and you can cool those 60W passively! I know this because I am cooling 65W Xeons passively in my video workstation. In fact if you are lucky the 65W Xeons are actually 50W, and 65W is the maximum envelope guaranteed. So if you get a lucky batch, you really are at 50W.

Dual cores make sense, because not EVERY server/workstation needs huge ZOMG factor, esp, just a NAS/fileserver type system.

If you want to re-purpose the server, or add additional user-servicing, just drop in another processor, or upgrade the CPUs as required.
