My electrical is a mixed bag of WTF since this house is a mixed bag of WTF as well LOL. powerlines have maxed out at 10Mbytes/sec. and this was in the next room and at the downstairs part of the house more like 6-7Mbytes/sec while wirelss N is 12-18Mbytes (5Ghz)

Yeah, the AV600's max out on my kit around 15-16MB transfer speed, so around 130Mbps. I think I managed 240Mbps if I plugged them into the same double port socket :p

also tested with old as balls netcomm NP285's, had similar issues (when a 500Mb powerline cant handle HTTP downloads over 8Mb DSL, i didnt expect the ancestor to do any better tbh)

Wow, those are like 85mbps advertised in 2008. I'm guessing the actual is much much less than that.

oh i'm derped as fuck, i've got three sets of adaptors here - not two. i read the wrong label.

edit: cant even find the newer adaptors now :(

edeeet: I'm questioning my sanity enough now to ponder that i used these 85Mb adaptors all along and the 500Mb ones were a convincing hallucination, since they've gone missing from a more or less sealed box. I'm missing 3 of 7 adaptors :/

Oh god damn, i'm seriously thinking i've lost my gigabit adaptors and when i moved to this house i used those old 85Mb ones in place of them by accident.

Either i'm going insane, or i've lost my expensive adaptors :(

found one!

NOT CRAZY, so i did test with the newer adaptors. You can all rest easy now, i'm not planning to stab you.

(in other words, i'll re-test them asap)

Nothing can beat an .11AC Aruba at the top end. In all my wireless testing I found nothing that could be them on sheer throughput speeds :D
Sadly they are twice the price of everything else.

EDIT: I'm actually using a Ruckus R500 AC AP at home (they sent me one for free and didn't want it back). £400 AP for free FTW.
Them and Meraki smoked everything else in speed. Although Xirrus has em beat featurewize!

True, but by that price point I'm going to recommend your average consumer just pay to have a cabling guy come out and fish a GBE.

Powerline *CAN* work - but try and buy from somewhere with a nice return policy if your experience ends up like mine.

I think that is good advise for either type of connection, powerline or wireless.

edeeet: I'm questioning my sanity enough now to ponder that i used these 85Mb adaptors all along and the 500Mb ones were a convincing hallucination, since they've gone missing from a more or less sealed box. I'm missing 3 of 7 adaptors :/

Something to point out, and I should have mentioned this in the write-up, man I suck, is that if you mix different speed rated powerline adapters the whole powerline network will run at the slowest speed.

I also have powerline. How should I test it to show it here for communal profit? Just copy a big folder with varied file types and screenshot of transfer rate?

Nice writeup newtekie. One thing I experienced is if you live in apartments or multi-unit condos or have a baby monitor - Wireless sucks!!! 2.4 or 5 doesn't matter because almost everybody in my building has the latest 5 ghz. I hard wired most of the rooms and when not possible use Powerline 500, million times stable than Wireless at least in my house. And if you absolutely want wireless you can buy the powerline to wireless devices, they work good too.

when my mom lived in her apartment for a while there was like 128 detectable APs in range!!!! out of that 30 had 5Ghz. I think the complex has over 900 units or something really huge 20 buildings.

she constantly asked how to fix her wifi stuff all the time it drove her nuts lol. apartment living sucks in many a way!

Fill the cavities in the walls and ceilings with water. Water is awesome at blocking signal, almost as good a lead/copper, then she can use her own wireless and nobody else can see it.

That may cause some structural difficulties however :D

the only thing you can do in those situations is directional antennas, use things like empty coke cans (cut one side out) so that you only have the wifi going towards the items you want - you can drastically cut back on interference that way.
