Hi. I am new to this forum but I see there are alot of knowledgeable people here so I figured I would run this by some of you. After 3 years I decided to do a total upgrade from my AMD 64/ Nforce 4 system. I have just ordered a new Nvidia 780i setup from newegg and I think I may have bought the wrong ram for overclocking my Q6600. Here are the specs:

XFX 780i SLI MB, Intel Q6600 (hopefully G0 stepping), Zalman 9700 cooler, OCZ 6400 SLI ready Ram, 2x XFX 8800GT's (670/1950), X-fi Prelude 7.1, PC Power&Cooling 750 quad SLI.

I have read all over the place that a Q6600 can get to 3.6 no prob but I am thinking maybe I sold myself short on the ram due to reading that the "SLI ready" stuff was the best for Nvidia boards. Should I try and send the ram back and get some pc8500 to get the most out of my q6600? Has anyone gotten there Q6600 to 3.6mhz using the pc6400? What type of ram is best to overclock a Q6600 on my platform? Info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

You've got a fantastic processor why overclock it in the first place. Probably achieve better results with PC8500 ram but it's silly to return your old ram for such a minor overclock performance wise.

Someone with a Q6600 please help this dude out!

Yeah its a nice cpu out of the box but I just cant go 2 or 3 weeks of having a new system without trying to get more out of it. I bought the Q6600 specifically to OC it. I'm already feeling the bug and I don't even have it yet. Thanks.

If you're intending that build for overclocking, I would say get the components that will best allow you to do so and reach your goals. That memory should take you to 3.6, but 8500 will be easier to get there with.

My DDR800 G.Skill has no issues hitting DDR1000+ due to it's Micron D9 IC's, but results can vary also. I would say read up a tad more on the memory you have and are interested in, see where they hit on OC, and how much room beyond your goal OC can they go? How much voltage does it take? How much slack do you gotta give the timings?

Hope that helps! :toast:

I hate to burst the bubble but if the 780i overclocks quad cores the same way the 680i does, you probably wont get that far overclocking.

I have read that the 780i oc's the Q6600 easily to 3.6 but you never know. I was never able to get what others were getting from my DFI NF4 SLI-DR and AMD 3500+. I guess it all depends on the chip and board that each person is lucky or unlucky to get.

Any confirmation to that or is it just a rumour ?

My system specs are enough to simply say please stop the hate on a platform that has obviously been quite good to alot of us.I run my E6600 at 3.7 for every day use,on air alone.I'm also a member of the 4.0 club and this rig got me there also on air.The 680i platform has given me alot more than i have asked for,and I am upgrading to a 780i next month and i expect even greater performance from that.My confidence in this platform does not come from crap that i have read but is quite simply my own personal experience. As for the way it overclocks quads.Simply head on over to evga's forum and ask the guys there about their "experience"And you'll be confident also.As for yorkfields, well that's what the 780i upgrade is for.Crash what are you basing your statements on?
