Yeah! My new 8TB WD Red HDD showed up....yeah, yeah, yeah!

20200403_152900.jpg

Need more storage for my Plex server.

I purchased the HDD through Amazon. Shipped out yesterday (from the local Amazon shipping facility that's about 4 or 5 miles from my house) and arrived today via USPS. The HDD shows up in this:

20200403_153009.jpg

Cheap ass shitty bubble envelope.

The HDD is new, sealed inside of it's very own static protection bag and nothing else. Some fucking retard at Amazon put a mechanical HDD into a cheap ass plastic bag to ship.

Hoping for the best, yet knowing things probably aren't going to end up well.....
I plug her into the hot swap bay and the HDD is recognized - that's a good thing.
Go into diskpart quick and set the drive to GPT. Then create the new volume and even run it through SMART quick - so far no problems.

But as the kids finally quiet down and go upstairs I can hear an odd 'thunk' sound coming from the tower. I pull the drive out of the hot swap bay and the sound stops. I put the drive back in and the sound comes back.
(the 'thunk' sound can be heard at the :07 and again at the :10 second marks - you might have to turn the volume up to hear it, but it's certainly noticeable over the sound of the fans)

I swear Amazon is worthless when it comes to shipping things for me as of lately. I've had what were supposed to be Christmas presents for the kids come from Amazon, they don't put the items in a box and label the box....no, they super tape up the actual box the toys come in and slap shipping labels/stickers all over the product's box.....how the hell are the kids going to believe Santa brought these gifts if there is amazon packing tape and shipping labels all over it?
Or how about the time I ordered a TV wall mount (thing weigh near 30+ pounds on it's own) and a few DVDs....they throw the TV mount in a box so large that it slides around in it and they put the DVDs in the same box....DVDs came smashed to hell.

Now I need to return this HDD and see if they ship one to me properly...fucking retards.

I wish their shipping facilities had a pickup.... they're so close to my house I'd just drive over and pick one up.

I live about a 15 minute casual drive away from a warehouse and I've wanted the same thing.
But if they have it in stock I get tomorrow and a few times I've gotten it the same day...I got a $3 bag of Big Chewy Nerds 2 hours after ordering it...lol

I don't know why they don't put those pickup lockers outside their warehouses and let people pick up from them. I'd imaging that would save them money in the end.

The world's richest company should have it figured out by now how to ship sensitive products like this. The customer should not have to tick a box at checkout that just started showing up in last few months. Amazon is a monopoly at this point and their service shows as much.

might be OEM drive. Then it would come in Hassle free easy to open blah blah aka bubble envelope. especially if it was a single item purchase.

You know, I've been very impressed with how well the 8TB WD Reds perform for a 5400RPM drive.

Kind of a shame to see them move away from the helium-filled drives at that capacity.

I got a WD80EMAZ white label 8TB helium filled drive from a $140 WD EasyStore external drive back in May 2019. It's been a great drive. Excellent performance and plenty of capacity.

Used it with my Plex server for a while before moving it to my main rig as a secondary drive. I now have five 3TB Reds in a "parity storage space" in my server.

I work at The ups store. People bring in amazon shit all the time. I ask was this packed like this and they answer yes.

I can pack anything toss it across a room and it will be like it came off a manufacturing line flawless.

The problem lie with the workers at amazons warehouses they are lazy and careless kinda like the checkout at Aldi... fck it in a box/carriage and be on your way.

I bought OEM 8TB drive off Ebay before from a mass seller (I'm guessing big server/networking type guys with leftover drives, not sure how they get so many so cheaply otherwise, they were on a crazy good sale. It arrived in a small cardboard box with styrofoam enclosures on both ends designed to fit said OEM hard drive. It was like half price of retail 8TB's at the time too, and HWInfo showed it only 600Gb reads/writes on it, was basically brand new as the seller stated with no errors. If you can find the right seller, an OEM drive is a great deal imo

This is a management oversight problem them, which re-enforces my point as companies become monopolies, management becomes lax. I used to buy hardcover books from Amazon they always came well protected a few years ago, in in last 1-2 years, they always arrive dented... sigh

Yep, I learned my lesson. I now buy elsewhere or just use public library. Luckily the state I live in has a great public library system and has almost everything I want in good condition to boot.

Well, I just rec'd 2x 25LB pags of cat food today, no boxes or plastic covering at all, just shipping labels slapped on the outside....

good thing they didn't arrive yesterday when it was monsooning outside or the stuff would have been a complete loss, and I would have had to yet A>G>A>I>N send off a fresh copy of my very loud and very strongly-worded complaint letter to the bezoboy .... for like the 6th time in 4 months for exactly the same shitty crap......

Last month it was my wireless keyboard that arrived cracked to hell & back, in December it was a very expensive present for my wife's birthday that got smashed into miniature pieces.......

It's good they are trying to cut down on cardboard waste, but on the same hand they should at least make it more clear to give you the option. They only added this little checkbox at checkout for extra packaging in recent months... pretty shady really, they could have it... more pronounced.

This is why I've only been buying hard drives via Brick and Mortar Retail boxes for the last decade or so. Too many Newegg and Amazon drives destroyed in shipping in the past. When you buy from a retail store they've usually been shipped in big boxes on pallets in the back of a Semi Trailer.

Cheap ass shitty bubble envelope.

The HDD is new, sealed inside of it's very own static protection bag and nothing else. Some fucking retard at Amazon put a mechanical HDD into a cheap ass plastic bag to ship.
I had the same thing happen with my BD drive. It came shipped in a bubble-wrap lined envelope and nothing else. Thankfully it survived shipping and is still going strong nearly a year later.

I've ordered some Seagate drives from Amazon, and they all shipped in cardboard boxes with molded plastic inserts holding the drive in place. Though maybe they've changed it since I last got one (in June 2018). All of those drives still work perfectly today.

I can't even imagine why the hell anyone, an invidual or a company, would even think about shipping a HDD in a bubblewrap bag, especially in 2020?!

I mean, EVERY* time I've bought or sold a HDD, it has been always well packaged, about 5 to 10 cm of some kind of protection; squeezed newspaper or anything on EVERY side. Feels like buying an used drive has usually better protection than a new one..

*Though I had a one bad experience in the last decade when I bought an used drive; came exactly in a bubblewrap bag... and when it dropped from the mailflap**, of course it fell to the floor. Yeah, you can guess did it work..

** I don't know that word in English if that isn't correct, a flap in an apartment door where mail comes as usually we don't have mailboxes in apartment houses in Finland.

More like way way overworked and have a crazy high quota to meet.
I'm pretty sure that all the RMAs from HDDs packaged like this will just increase that. :D
