nice mobo with lots of connectivity
videocard - ati or nv not sure, methinks nv has acceleration
a nice efficent powersupply, a tx corsair im sure

upgradability is a consideration ( maybe 2-3 yrs from now)

I agree. 6 core. I have an architect friend too and I am recommending her my build which has a 6 core AMD. It's just as good as a Core i7 so why not?

You might want something a little stronger in the GPU department if theres a lot of design work being done. Generally nVidia would be best for this, as it has CUDA support. Some of the apps he may use (or may use in the future) would be greatly accellerated by CUDA.

Get a workstation card instead, more expensive but I believe it will help in Autocad.

Can't suggest, I have not used any  My friend (who uses 3d max) says that the graphics card is only useful for real time rendering, when it comes to actual rendering the cpu takes the brunt of the workload.
