Apple today announced the all-new Mac Pro will be available to order starting Thursday, December 19. Redesigned from the inside out, the all-new Mac Pro features the latest Intel Xeon processors, dual workstation-class GPUs, PCIe-based flash storage and ultra-fast ECC memory.

Designed around an innovative unified thermal core, the all-new Mac Pro packs unprecedented performance into an aluminum enclosure that is just 9.9-inches tall and one-eighth the volume of the previous generation. Mac Pro features 4-core, 6-core, 8-core or 12-core Intel Xeon processors running at Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.9 GHz and two workstation-class AMD FirePro GPUs that deliver up to eight times the graphics performance of the previous generation Mac Pro.

PCIe-based flash storage delivers sequential read speeds up to 10 times faster than conventional desktop hard drives, and ECC DDR3 gives the new Mac Pro up to 60 GBps of memory bandwidth for seamlessly editing full-resolution 4K video while simultaneously rendering effects in the background. With an incredible six Thunderbolt 2 ports, each with up to 20 Gbps of bandwidth per device, the new Mac Pro completely redefines desktop expandability with support for up to 36 high-performance peripherals, including the latest 4K displays.

Pricing & Availability
The Mac Pro is available with a 3.7 GHz quad-core Intel Xeon E5 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.9 GHz, dual AMD FirePro D300 GPUs with 2 GB of VRAM each, 12 GB of memory, and 256 GB of PCIe-based flash storage starting at $2,999 (US); and with a 3.5 GHz 6-core Intel Xeon E5 processor with Turbo Boost speeds up to 3.9 GHz, dual AMD FirePro D500 GPUs with 3 GB of VRAM each, 16 GB of memory, and 256 GB of PCIe-based flash storage starting at $3,999 (US). Configure-to-order options include faster 8-core or 12-core Intel Xeon E5 processors, AMD FirePro D700 GPUs with 6 GB of VRAM, up to 64 GB of memory, and up to 1 TB of PCIe-based flash storage. Additional technical specifications, configure-to-order options and accessories are available online at www.apple.com/mac-pro.

I’d like to see a rethink of the long-dated ATX way of construction for PC’s. More based on a central backbone that has less to do as mobo, north-south bridge chipset dependence, and just a interconnect of a modules. The backbone is not as today mobo/CPU specific and the CPU module slot is a standard. that contain CPU and chipset, more as a GPU does today. Other than memory/PCI-E/SATA/USB/Power interconnects all of which hasn’t the long wire harnesses to make connections. Backbones and PSU would come in as power-levels standards dependent on size. In some from-factors SSD’s would plug in directly into their own slot/holders. Such Backbones might support a decade or more of upcoming standards. CPU’s would be supplied as GPU’s AIB’s install chips COB or DCA, (no more sockets) and cooling systems installed.

I might seem farfetched but with things getting smaller and CPU looking to HAS and graphics is there anyone looking a changing the standards?

That thing is going to run so hot and be throttled so much

We'll see.

I love the looks on that thing, but like others have said, it might not be perfect for a workstation. On the other hand, that makes it sort of strange, and that is not a bad thing imo.

While I'm not generally an Apple fan, you have to admit that the form factor is pretty amazing.

If my calculations are correct, this comes in at about 5.5L volume, which makes it 1.5L smaller than the Lian-Li PC-Q12 - a nice case for a professional desktop but one with no expansion capability.

The next smallest case with a single expansion slot is the Silverstone SG05/06, which is 11L.

In order to build a PC with the same capability as this Mac Pro, you would need a uATX form factor, so the Silverstone SG09/10 would be the smallest at 23L.

So the best you can do with standard components is something that is 4 times the volume of this new Mac Pro. Pretty amazing, assuming it performs.

Put the name Apple in any news article on TPU and people immediately turn off their brains and starting bashing it.

If you put DELL or HP on that thing people would be blowing their pulpy loads all over this thread.

Not exactly, in pretty much every DELL and HP workstation article we are still bashing how overpriced the product is compared to buying all the pieces independently. Oh and how bad the type of warranty is (ie some stuff can have 5 year warranty independently but these ready-to-go workstations have 2 or 3 year warranty and you must send the whole thing back to the retailer).

I'm a Apple guy, but I'm for sure that you can get more performance out of a PC for SFX and Video Editing than the new Mac Pro...

Apple needs to have a focused plan with the Mac Pro if it hopes to have a continued reason to build and sell it. The company is already losing market share in professional video and 3D modeling due to intermittent Mac Pro hardware updates and the company's blasé stance towards professionals. Apple needs to prove it cares about this market by frequently refreshing the hardware and maintaining consistency in software. This is a good first step, but Apple's moves (or lack of) next year will determine whether or not the Mac Pro line continues to fade into obscurity.

Is that a ice-bucket, an ashtray, a waste paper bin, or 7.1 subwoofer?

I love to see a total rethink of the design of a PC/Mac. But something "new" rather than looking like "something else" would have been a better design.

You don't come here often do you? I've seen more bashing done to HP and Dell than posts of love. Heck I can't even remember a positive post involving HP.

You want to bash PC folk like that you can. But we aren't the dumb ones paying thousands for the same hunk of hardware with the only difference being OSX. Granted I used to support Mac users but when you build your first PC, you quickly understand how much Apple rips people off. You could tout quality hardware but the reports of Macs failing has increased exponentially these last few years. Heck I got relatives that have been through about 3 Mac Pros because they keep breaking down.

Once you see the truth that Apple isn't perfection, they are as greedy as any corporation, and Jobs wasn't some form of heavenly being...you start seeing Apple for what it is and you either make a hackintosh, or you go PC.

uh, compare my post count with yours.

my comment is on the fact that if it has the name Apple in front then people will automatically hate it. Just go back through any news article with Apple and you will see what I mean. Even when it comes to them revolutionizing EVERY single aspect of the PC experience people will still bash them.

Post count means nothing. Reknown and respect throughout the forums means everything.

The Mac platform is far too closed, they revolutionised linearity and no freedom of choice.
PC's are also far too big and noisy IMO.

Now I'll just go outside and bang a stick on a rock until true enlightenment.
