I know the improvement is not that substantial but this will be my last build for quite some time (possibly another 3 years).

What direction should I go, and for your info I will be using this machine for gaming, movie watching and music playing.
If I go IB
The mobo choices I have in mind are the Asrock z77 oc formula or the MSI z77 Mpower

If I go Haswell
Toss up between the new version of the aforementioned mobos.

I will be bundling this with a Creative Soundblaster ZXR.

What route should I go? I'm leaning towards the Haswell version.

I own a Gigabyte z77 board and a stock i5 3550. You can't go wrong with either one. You can probably find cheaper deals on ebay for a used z77 boards and ivy bridge cpus. If you are buying brand new and don't want to upgrade for another 3 yrs than the new socket 1150 haswell cpus will be a better buy. Ivy bridge prices brand new are almost identical. Haswell is faster clock per clock. It has a higher TDP 84w vs 77w. Haswell has the new onboard GPU HD 4600.

I've used the Intel Q9550 and AMD Phenom II x4s and those were good. The core i5 3550 upgrade was very noticeable. Everything runs snappier and quieter. It's very quick with everything you do gaming, encoding, multitasking, ect. The cpu score on windows 7 is a 7.6 if your wondering how well it compares.

Final answer...get the new board,ddr3,cpu. If you got extra money get a SSD.

Haswell does not off much more than Ivy. With the price of Ivy being lower and Z77 boards, Ivy is a better bang. If you can afford 3770K get it due to no hyperthreading on 3570K

My Current system consist of an i5 2500k with a z68 g3 msi gd80. I was thinking of possibly updating my htpc which is running a NVidia 6 chipset with a q6600 and a hd3870 with the SB system and have the Haswell as my main. No gpu purchase yet I would hold back on that.

If I were to buy a the 3770k it would costs me 230 the 4770k would be 280.
The OC formula on the z77 would set me back 230 on the z87 Asrock told me it would retail somewhere around 280

The z77 mPower would set me back 200 and the z87 version would set me back anywhere from 230 to 260

I was thinking about going the top of like line k route because of that...as I do convert large mkv files and I would like to start using photoshop a lot more. As I have stated I will be keeping this system for at least 3 yrs.

I have a 2500K and see no reason to upgrade to IB or Haswell.

If you need to upgrade your htpc, I would go with the most power efficient, cheapest CPU, no overclock needed. Just build a new htpc.

If you don't really need to upgrade the htpc, the best way to improve your current system is by upgrading your GPU. Those CPUs won't make that much difference, but a next gen graphics card probably will.

Depending, of course, on what you are using now.

A lowly 8800gt but I was going to wait until amd releases their next gen before I choose between the 780 and whatever is there. I was thinking maybe I could even sell my SB parts to offset as much of the cost as possible.

I always say if you could afford it go for it, but there is a$100 savings for 5% performance increase? Put the $100 in a better GPU.

poor choice of words in a post.

OT, the Ivy route is cheaper for a tiny performance loss. If you can safely afford Haswell without sacrificing money on important components (GPU mentioned above) then go for it, no sense in going for a low ball. BUT, the Ivy CPU's are still awesome gamers, and you'll probably notice no difference and save money towards something more useful.

Well I bit the bullet and bought the Mpower and the 4770k and both the Creative ZX and ZXR. I will test out the sound cards and see which I like better and return the other, or maybe sell it to my younger brother. My old i5 2500k system... If I cant sell it I will just migrate it to my htpc.

I think you should consider the 2600K or 2700K if you want a decent overclock and get screamingly fast performance in your games.

However, if the newer features are important to you and you're not into overclocking, then you should get Haswell.

I've written an article about this here if you want more detail about this issue.

(but for the sake of the topic: I'd rather overclock the 2500k. You can do that as well as undervolting the chip. Even SB to Haswell isn't really a huge performance increase anyway.)

I have a 2500k already going to the 2600 or 2700 wont really yield that much better results, I am more likely to see gains just skipping IVY and leaping to the top of the line Haswell.
