I want to build something with a smaller footprint size wise and wattage wise. Intel is a must (sorry)

I am keeping the AMD Radeon 5700 and the M.2 drive.

I don't see any red flags here for whatever undisclosed usage cases you have planned for it.

It will be fine for mundane daily use, productivity applications, light gaming.

My daily driver Windows PC (a mini-ITX build, not the one in my System Specs) probably has similar performance.

Eh. It's a reasonable build.

I would probably swap the 12400F for a 13600K and limit it to 125W which is stock power limit, you'll still benefit from 6P+8E instead of 6P+4E, alongside the newer architecture and improvements to the Intel 7 process.

I don't really see the need for DDR5 in a budget build, the ram and mobo combo you've picked could instead be a higher end DDR4 one - it's basically equivalent to DDR4 2800/CL18, which isn't good, by any means.

So you could get 13600K (125W), B660 DDR4, 32GB 3600/16 and probably a better PSU too, while staying within your budget of $900.

you can get a better PSU than that. 850w Corsair RM gold is currently 114 on newegg and amazon

peak efficiency is around 40% use of a PSU. so at load, you might be swinging peak power savings with an 850 too.

edit: just saw 80 watt hamsters post. yeah his build is better i think, nm my psu recommendation.

But at the same time I do want some power to game and to last a few years. I like the idea of going with the better i5 that has 14 cores and DDR4 I think it makes more sense for me. Unless you're running Prime95 24/7 or doing extremely specific types of compute heavy work - the 13600K limited to 125 W will be both faster and more efficient than the 12400F.

The board I listed is available at the same price from Amazon. Chose B&H as seller because I don't like Amazon. Went with that board because it has Wi-Fi like your original choice, you're OK with MSI based on your list and I like their PRO boards generally speaking. Their MAG Mortar has more robust power delivery for another $30 if that's a concern, though the PRO should handle a non-OC'ed i5 just fine.

This is why I went with the i7-12700F in the build I just did. I was going to do the fastest i5, but on my budget, I am glad I went with the i7 since it saved me from buying a cpu cooler. The boxed one works well, and I can always change it when I decide to up the power settings on it from the stock 65 watts.

You can remove the Vengenance LPX if you're going with the Ripjaws.
I wouldn't see the PSU as a place to save $30, you're going down 100 W and 2% efficiency, plus it's the III series not the V series, which I've checked is from 2017. Still a good PSU, but just my 2c.

The 13600K is great, but only if you plan to upgrade the GPU soon and only if you're running Windows 11. Those E cores will be a problem on Windows 10 or any flavour of Linux, as far as I'm currently aware. I just sold a PC this evening with an i5-10505 and RX5700 and the GPU was 100% the bottleneck even at 1080p.

If your budget isn't tight, then that's fine but TBH it hurts to see people buying 10th Gen Intel CPUs new when locked CPUs rarely go "bad" and you can pick them up on the used market for barely half the price. I'm on the other side of the pond, but I'm finding used examples of the i5-10500 and 10505 around here for ~£80 including 20% sales tax. We even have a few different outlets that are basically networks of online pawn shops so they gather used inventory at a buy price and sell it off about 30% higher with short warranties in case their brief testing missed anything.

Honestly, 10th Gen i5 is the sweet spot for an RX 5700 and if you're planning on using that for a good while then match it with an appropriately-priced and aged platform. I (personally) find future-proofing to be a fallacy that a lot of people completely fail to take advantage of. I cannot speak for you, but so often I see people overspend on a brand new platform to give themselves upgrade options that they never take. Ebay is loaded with CPU/RAM/board combos and there are Z-series boards with locked i5 chips in them insanely often. Clearly they bought the high end board to upgrade to a next-gen i9 later but never needed to until the platform was too old.

The 13600K is a great CPU for the LGA1700 platform but if you don't have a solid reason to spend $440 on a CPU and board combo, see if you can find a $100 i5-10500/10505(F) used for $100 and then dump it into a new $100 B560 board. That $240 saved can be put aside for whenever the RX 5700 is replaced, not that there's any pressing need to do that for 1080p gaming these days.

Or, ignore me because you're not interested in the best bang for your buck and just want a fully modern platform to play with.

Looks good, you're missing out on two USB ports, PCIe Gen 5, one m.2 slot and two power stages with the MSI B660 over the Asus Z790M, not sure that's worth it for 400 MHz faster RAM that's twice the price.

You can always manually OC, I wouldn't be surprised if the Vulcan 3200/16 could do 3600/18.

Honestly, 10th Gen i5 is the sweet spot for an RX 5700 and if you're planning on using that for a good while then match it with an appropriately-priced and aged platform.

I do plan on upgrading the GPU next year potentially once prices are more reasonable. Interesting note about the E-cores with Linux though. I will need to do some research on that.

Linux isn't unfamiliar with big.LITTLE, it's been in android for years. Intel's approach isn't that different.
