New build old user back again

Hi all,

The last system I built was yearssss ago, so I thought I would run it by you guys what I was wanting to buy for this build.

The system is mainly for gaming, hopefully in 4k or getting close enough to that resolution.

I will be playing a lot of p3d with it and would like it to be future proof some what for new releases to come that will push it hard.

What I thought about getting is as follows

Corsair Carbide Series SPEC-03 Red LED Mid Tower
i7 7700k 4.2ghz kaby lake
Master hyper 212 CPU cooler
Gigabyte z270x ultra mobo
2x8gb corsair vengeance LPX 3200
Toshiba 240GB SSD
MSI Geforce GTX 1080 SEAHAWK X 8GB
Cooler master 700w masterwatt lite PSU

I have a WiFi Dongle, keyboard and mouse and a 1080p monitor which I will upgrade after funds increase after this purchase. I also have plenty of storage including another 240gb ssd which I will run p3d from and use the new ssd for the os. I would like to over clock it some what aswel

All advice appreciated if anyone can piece together any better items than what I have listed. All of this will cost me around £1300, really don't want to spend too much more.

Wow, that's going to be quite the step up!

My 2 cents:
...Nix the Hyper cooler and splurge on a good Noctua. Unless you're not overclocking that K chip which would be punishable by verbal abuse

...Go with a larger SSD, depending on how many games you'll have installed and SSD drive data

Agreed on the bigger ssd, what I would say is if that is too expensive get a wd black drive. Also, this is just me but I've built around 6 PCs with hyper 212s and I have yet to see one be unable to achieve an oc of at least 1ghz while maintaining decent noise and decent thermals. Either way get yourself some extra fans for whatever cooler you go with.

The Hyper 212 is a solid cooler, I owned one. Swapped with a be quiet, and did see about 5c-10c less. There are better out there, just depends on how much a premium you're willing to pay.

True, but I'm really cheap so I haven't bought many different coolers recently.

Only thing I can think of is try and reduce the cost somewhere else and get a 1080ti if you are going to do 4K.

I agree, drop the seahawk 1080 and just get an air cooled 1080ti. Much better performance and if you have decent airflow you should have no issues with it.

Yeah I am going to drop the 1080 for the ti, I can get one for just over £100 more and as you say if I want 4k easily it has to be done.

I've already got a crucial 240gb SSD from my old rig I will drop in and about 2tb of spinner storage.

The 212 is free with the mobo so that's why I chose that

Do you guys think that mobo will be good enough for a slight oc? Maybe 4.5/4.6, the cooler should handle that and the case has plenty of 120mm fans for good airflow.

Q2 2017 by what my quick Google has said, so should be out now. Apparently 200 series mobos won't work with this new architecture so that will add to the expense.

Do you think it will pay for me to wait a few weeks for coffee lake?

I am on Newegg now specing up a system. Might take a little longer for stuff to arrive but the savings will be great.

Even the next gen i5 might a better choice , a 6-core CPU fares better on paper than a 4-core/8-thread one.

Why going with Intel when you can go with cheaper and more efficient AMD system?

For proper 4K gaming, you'll need at least GTX 1080 Ti which will make your configuration way too expensive. I recommend 1440p system for the next 5 or so years, because you'll save a lot of money and you'll still have a high-end system. If you cannot spend 2K GBP for a proper 4K system, don't even think about it because such system needs really powerful hardware. Of course, it's very important to build a "matching system" and honestly, I wouldn't even remotely consider anything below 8-core/16-thread CPU (Ryzen 7 1700X / 1800X, i7 6900K, Xeon E5 1660 v4 etc.), GTX 1080 Ti or dual RX 580 8GB and 32 GB RAM for such system.

It's a very powerful system more than capable for 1440p gaming and still quite capable for 4K, although I said what a proper 4K system should look like.

Definitely wait for Coffee Lake and good idea to get the 1080 Ti for 4K.

That SSD is fine for a system drive, but be sure to have a HDD of at least a couple of TB and put all your Steam/Origin games on that plus your general data. I've already run out of space on my 2TB partition on the 4TB drive I have since I have well over 200 games and cannot install all of them at the same time anymore.

You'll also need a second drive or cloud account to back up that priceless general data and I do mean priceless. Not worth skimping on that or you'll come a cropper one day.

its pretty wise to wait, new CPU are in the next corner and probably you will miss a great deal with a better CPU

I went AMD the last time so fancy a change, I know the FX6300 isn't the best processor out of what was out at the time but I thought it would have been abit more powerful. Tbh my previous system I scrimped on to keep the price down and in the end it hurt me so I don't want to make the same mistake. I have decided that the 1080 ti is a definite and I will see how much the i7 7700k is after coffee lake comes out and also see how much the new processors are and the mobos also. Just have to stay patient ATM and hold out. But buying off of Newegg is the way I will go to keep prices down

i'll stay with i have and wait for new gen intel's units, your current setup still decent to hold some months and see better options, cuz when new units are launched some other might be on sale due new products, will be a lot wiser than getting mainstream 4cores with ht for the same price you could get 6cores with ht for the same price, and also marginally newer.

i have found better deals at ebay.com for some parts such as boards and sometimes coolers
