Dear forum dwellers,

I cannot decide for my life whether at this stage i should do a new build or upgrade the current rig.

CPU : I7 6700k
Ram : DDR4 2666mhz
SSD : 512 Crucial BX100
GPU : Asus Strix GTX 1070ti
MON : 27" 1080p

As for new build i havent really decided on ryzen or intel yet for now i just want to know whether i shud upgrade or new build based on you guys opinion.

The computer will be mostly used for gaming, light editing of photos here and there. Possibly some video editing in the future as I have a few videos I need to go through. As for the games I play few of the triple a titles.

Please Advice

6700k should last you till Ryzen 4000 or 10nm Intel if it comes out this century. You didn't specify your use case but a 3700X would be a nice if unnecessary upgrade.

The 1070ti is solid for 1080P gaming it should last you till big navi or RTX 3000.

A 1tb NVME drive would he a nice upgrade maybe some faster ram while it's cheap although I doubt that will benefit you much.

Overall you still have a pretty solid 1080p gaming system 8 threads still seems to be the sweet spot for frame times.

If you do plan on going with a 1440p monitor soon a 2080 super might be a nice upgrade.

You can easily hold off for a year. Once nextgen consoles get released (probably 2nd or 3rd quarter next year) you'll know what to expect. At that point Intel should be "on track" for 7nm rollout and Amd should have their Zen 2+ ready. In addition to this Nvidia will probably release their updated GPU lineup (possibly with refined RTX features and performance) and Amd will have new offerings from RDNA architecture. As @oxrufiioxo said, your system is good enough for 1080p gaming.

If you have an update itch consider getting an NVMe ssd, there are good budget offerings (i.e. Crucial P1), as well as bang for buck variants (A-data 8200 Pro).

My vote is: wait for a year.

It's not really possible to answer this question without you giving details on how you use your computer.

Yeah i completely agree with the above. I consider 6700k=7700k. If the PS5 has more than 8 threads, I will fork out for a 9900k. It all depends whether the PS5 will be 8core/8 thread or 8 core/16 thread. If 8 threads only I will keep my i7 till it cant hold 60FPS (2-3 years hopefully). If PS5 has 16 threads I will buy 9900k before the PS5 launches, our Quad Core CPU's will drop in value. I would pair the i9 with my 1060 until GTA VI launches. I want to make sure I max it at 4K60FPS.
FYI, Ryzen CPUs are the best choice now, chose 9900k because all I do is gaming and Youtube,I like having one of each brand, and thanks to AMDs forward compatibilty, my 1600X will be upgraded to 3800X when needed.

Yeah in fact you should upgrade to at least 2560x1440 with that card. The whole reason im happy with my 1060 is due to my TV supporting 1080P60Hz and 4k60Hz, but only 30Hz at 1440P sadly.

No need to upgrade any of it. 1070TI paired with a 6700K will be able to drive any game on 1080P for a good long while. I'm on a GTX980, 1080P monitor @ 144MHz been up then to a GTX1080, then back down to this GTX980 that I've owned for 3 years. I go without wanting. Every game works. All at 60FPS plus, many at 144FPS Vsync locked. Settings in games adjusted accordingly. And believe that I don't play games that look naff graphically. And I play everything. You don't NEED to upgrade your G-Card or CPU. Faster RAM can make a difference and is an optional upgrade. You failed to list the amount. 8GB is NOT enough IMO and experience. 16GB is required. 32GB makes the whole experience smoother and really only makes a difference in high end programs. Storage is dependent on need. If you need more space then upgrade. If not, then is fine. 2 years is a very good estimate on the life span your current build has left in it, before an upgrade is defo required.

No. Not sure what motherboard you have but a m2 sata drive would be a nice to have, faster than ssd. Also are you OC'ing at all? If not there's even more room. My systems in my specs - (which reminds me need to update montior) runs a Acer Predator IPS 2560x1440 @ 144hz in many games on ultra or very high settings. The 1070ti is 5% faster then my 980ti stock.

Not actually worth swapping motherboard CPU and possibly memory for , pciex addin pcb, yes but still negligible gains over sata and I am using one presently(well one of each type a sata ssd an nvme on mobo and an addin PCiex with an nvme fitted).
I would hold a year, there are astronomical changes coming IMHO.
Finally..

sorry guys i didnt list the motherboard down, its an asus strix z270-f. Ah good news guys the decision has been made to get a new box, but the old box is gonna be used for work so which ssd you guys recommend to get, since the crucial bx100 will be a secondary ssd.

New Build :

Intel i9 9900k - As the price is going down, this cpu is very stronk for gaming and cheaper motherboard than amd x570s
Gigabyte Z390 Aorus Master - can recommend a different motherboard guys if you think this is not up to scratch
Samsung 970 Evo plus 1tb - One of the fastest for pci-e 3.0 besides the pro version
Corsair Vengeance 32gb DDR3200mhz - can recommend a different ram please
Corsair H150i 360mm aio cooler - can recommend a different cooler or go air cooling :)
Corsair HX850 PSu - this is platinum psu and super cheap atm, so not going to change most likely.
Lian Li PC-011 white color case - i love this case :)
Case fans - Corsair ML120 Pro can recommend different one please.

I didnt choose amd platform even though its similar in price and has more cores, because its currently unstable with bios chipsets, drivers etc etc. Would like the 12 core ryzen 9 3900x and also the amd mobo mentioned is more expensive too.

What do you think guys? My first complete newish build :), pretty happy with it.
The only old part is the GPU, but upgrade is coming next year. Skipping this years gpu from amd and nvidia.
