socket 2066 just replaced socket 2011 v3, which replaced your (and mine) current socket 2011 X79 systems. AMD's offering are also worth considering. Before anyone can actually give a build suggestion, we need to know your budget, what you use the computer for, and what, if any, specific software you'll be running (this is more for system used for work than gaming). Also, will this be a upgrade for your current system, or is this a full build? Can we suggest using parts in your current system like the PSU, CPU heat sink, HHD/SSD, and case?

yes Budget and what do plan on using it for will help us suggest which sort of build will be right for you I'd also second taking a look at what AMD has to offer in the RyZen way aswell

I was considering the 8 core Intel before it came out. Now that I see the crazy restrictions Intel is insisting on, and the high cost of the X299 MBs and $600 for the CPU, it's hard to justify it really. Especially since I just saw an X1800 at Newegg for only $420.

That said, since I'm coming from a CPU that didn't OC well, I'm also not that keen on the Ryzen chips that need a lot of tweaking and expensive RAM just to get close in performance. That leaves me waiting for Intel's S model Hex core Coffee Lake chip, which will be just two channel and hopefully fit the regular Skylake 1155 MBs.

I mean 8 core is nice and all, but considering it will be mainly for gaming, a hex should do fine until 8 cores become mainstream, which will no doubt be some time yet.

Im interested here, why not AMD? it seems you want to pay horrendous more amounts of dollars for such a small difference in performance.

I could buy 1800X for 350 euro.
But do you see memory performance on i9-7900X. 100.000 in AIDA64.
Maybe you should think to find used i7-6900K and RVE for 300$.
You lose nothing. I can bet on 4.5GHz give same result as i7-7820X on 4.3GHz.
If you can't OC to 4.5GHz you can on 4.3GHz. 40 PCI-E lanes, soldered IHS, DDR4 3200MHz work.
40 PCI-E lanes for 2 GPU. Or if you use one GPU you could install M.2 in socket and other M.2 in PCI-E slot with adapter.
And really no something important new with X299. OK AMD have nice multi thread performance, but what is with memory speed,
or single threaded performance of i7-7820X and i9-7900X are excellent. That's their advantage and compare to X99.
We notice that 1800X is similar to I7-6900K on 3.7GHz with 2400 Cache. But 1800X OC 200MHz and i7-6900K 600-700MHz + 1000-1500MHz Cache and improve seriously performance of platform.
Don't think like that I will buy 8 core when become mainstream. Intel hurry to launch new mainstream with 6 cores. They done that because need to stay in 100W range, with 8 cores they can't. There is evidence that some games notice 8 cores, we can't ignore that.
Single threaded performance are important, but I would not take 4 cores on 5.0GHz for 5fps higher in games designed for 4 cores and 30% lower result in any situation where software recognize more than 4 cores. I'm more satisfied with 8 cores on 4.5 than 4 cores on 5.0GHz.
I will gladly to say yes I have 180fps not 190fps, but my platform is 30-40% faster and better memory results. When Intel launch Coffer Lake all developers will try to optimize games to 6 cores.

I think that we should wait, I never heared so many negative comments from reviews than for X299. But that's not reason to choose inferior AMD products.
AMD is now inferior to Intel.
Other things is because Intel fucked up loyal customers who invest in previous years in different i7 and didn't want to say OK I drive them 7 years, now AMD is competition I will beat them and we will give 10 cores 100$ more than AMD's 8 cores. Not they give exactly close to AMD, but never enough to customers says WOW this is great now worth invest in Intel.
They fucked up with price, with thermal paste, motherboards manufacturers launch boards with single 8 pin connector and ask 40% higher price than X99 motherboard.
And that'w not everything, Intel offer i5 for Rampage VI Extreme, or 490$ worth Deluxe. i5, I don't even know specification of that model or name, when I heared i5 that was enough for me, such processors should be installed in 110$ worth mobo for people who no money to invest 280$ in i7 non K. He is now optimized for same socket as 2000$ worth Intel. And both of them have same thermal paste under IHS. That's disaster, I don't know... they eat some mushrooms probably. But that's not my concern. My concern is because Intel missed to give us i7-7820X soldered with 44 PCI-E lanes for same price as 1800X and i9 for 150$ more and because Rampage VI Extreme should cost 450$ MAX and Apex 350-380$ and than we could say Intel platform is great, they have nice improvement in single thread apps, nice memory copy, write, read performance, strong chipset with more than 20 PCI-E lanes, CPU with 44 PCI-E lanes,...

Lucky for me I choosed X99 and if 6 cores are not competitive than 8 and 10 cores are very competitive to newest processors, because with Z170 I would be shocked with improvements in multi threaded applications and Cinebench results and I would not calm down before I upgrade from i7-6700K to X299. Maybe this was last soldered platform. People still cry for Sandy Bridge, maybe is Brodwell-E last good enthusiasts CPU capable to OC well without thermal paste.
X99 worked 3 years and could work 3 more years after jump from 6 to 8 cores or 5 more with 10 cores overclocked.

There are a lot of really good X99 combo-deals around these days. I have two of them running and they're sweet.
I also have a Ryzen 1700X box and it's pretty nice too.

X299 seems to be more a kneejerk reaction to Ryzen than something that was carefully planned for and executed.
It has growing pains and I decided to avoid it for now.

X99 is my recommendation.

Honestly, for what you use your system for, upgrading more than the video car is a waste of money IMHO. Honestly, the only reason I would upgrade my 3930k would be for more cores to improve my crunching performance. Gaming and everyday use, any i7 newer than the 2600k is very adequate for gaming and everyday use. But it's your money, so here is my upgrade suggestion- https://uk.pcpartpicker.com/list/BXQG4C

My i7-4790K system (currently on a shelf) beats my X99 systems in some benchmarks. I was going to sell the Z97X-Gaming3 Mainboard, CPU, and 16GB DDR3-2400MHz memory but I keep putting it off.
I can't bring myself to let it go. I may set it up to crunch instead.
So your point is valid. Old isn't necessarily bad. There's a reason we buy better than average PC gear. (longevity)
