Right well thanks to your guys help last time i built a nice wee computer but i want a slight different approach now. (and i managed to sell it for a profit :D) Now funds wont be too much of an issue but would be nice if i can keep it on the under side of $3500NZD (remember prices for parts are allot more expensive than else where)

So here two examples. I am a refrigeration engineer so later on am looking for a custom made cooler. I buy all my gear through www.computerlounge.co.nz.

Unit One
XSPC Raystorm 750 EX360 $279.95
Asus BC-12D2HT Blu-Ray $119.95
Crucial M500 240GB SSD 239.95
Kingston HyperX Beast 2x8gb
Asus Rampage IV Black EDIT LGA2011 $849.95
I7 4930k $829.95
FSP Aurum Pro Gold 1000w $299.95
Gigabyte GV-N770OC-4GD $649.95x2
total$4260ish
Unit two (swaping out the mobo for 1150 instead of a 2011)
Asus Maximus VI Formula ATX $549.95
I7 4770k $469.95
total $3600ish

Now if for the little bit extra the 2011 preforms better than the 1150 ill look at going that way. I hate being mainstream but at the same time i don't want to do something THAT stupid i cant justify it in some way.

Storage i have 2x tb drives and the cpu cooler was basically because i like the cpu heat sink (im going to adapt it later)

Any help in this matter would be great

Regards
Ben

the 2011 system will be faster, but will you be able to actually use that speed? What will you be using the computer to do? If just gaming, stay with socket 1150 unless you plan on doing a triple video card set-up

Thanks for the speedy reply. The computer is going to be used primarily for gaming but it is a project to basically say, why not? because i can. Iv got a small water bank keg chiller at work im going to mod into the cooling run at a later date.

so im guessing a 3x sli would be good for a 3 monitor set up?

Yes, but if you have 3 120hz monitors, you need 3 gpu for that) because of connection(DVI-DL(Dual Link)), about sli, why not 2x 780? or 2x 780 ti ? :D
I think 1 120hz panel would be okay, other 2 can be 60hz, so 2 gpu is alright.
Some new 144(120) hz monitors in a specification have a : "Input Connector: D-sub / DVI / HDMIx2 / DP1.2 Headphone jack".The gpu has 2 dvi ports: 1 dvi-dl, 1 dvi, so you can use 3 120hz if specification on benq.gaming is dont lie)

In all honesty the reason i liked the windforce 770OC-4GD was because it was upthere with the high rollers in terms of speed but it also had that extra 1gb of VRAM. And for the price its about the same for two rather than just one. Iv never sli before and was talking to a man who had with these particular cards and it worked really well. The 2011 board i noticed not only does it have 8ram slots supporting upto 64gb ram it has 2x 16x PCI-E slots. Which i thought was quite attractive. Performance difference most probably 0 but still a nice touch.

Barb what you think about it? I think if price not a matter 2x 780 its a 3gb each would be okay for almost any resolution you want. But if the 780 price is higher more than on 40% its not worth i think) 1 of the reasons why i talking about 2x 780 is that on 2011 only 2x pci-e 3.0 x16 ^^ so triple sli can be not so fast and some games can exp bad tri sli scaling i guess

Well if this is a "Why not?" situation, then by all means(*looks at that new GTX 780ti hung up in my system), go for it, Hell Yeah. And on that thought, I have to agree with Chet about the GTX 780ti suggestion. Yes it's expensive, but YOLO right(I don't believe I just said "YOLO")? Two GTX 780ti in SLI would have no problem with a triple 24" 1200p monitor set-up. Personally, I prefer higher resolution to higher Hz. I currently have a single EVGA GTX 780ti SC running a single 2560*1600 30" monitor. The card has no problems running any game, including Crysis 3 and BF4 at that resolution and ultra high details. It wouldn't surprise me if a just one of these cards could handle triple 1200p monitors.

Keep in mind, a GTX 770 is just a rebranded GTX 680

2x 780 its a 6gb would be okay for any resolution you want.

@ Chet, the RAM doesn't add up like that. The way it works is each GPU can only use the RAM that is on that card. So in a SLI set-up, GPU #1 can only use the RAM on video card #1, and GPU #2 can only use the RAM installed on video card #2. So each GPU only has 3 gb of RAM available to it.

Don't this depend on how long he plans to keep using the system too ?, saay if you can get a 2011 socket for not much more might just give the system more life 2-3 maybe 4 years from now ?.

What do you mean there Mr AsRock? Iv gone over all the specs and reviews but need some first hand advice on this particular set up. (That new asus card MARS wouldve been nice if it was 4gb rather than just 2gb VRAM )

If theres some other build that you guys recommend please do let me know or even link me that way. Iv just been seeing what people have been saying and with these parts yeah sure i know i dont need the black edition 2011 but ya know?! lol For that little more i get that little something thats different.

What about 2* GTX 780, ti or not?

Ps just saw your comment about rebranding the 680... mmm ill have a wee look into that. I knowe theyre cheeky but that cheeky?!

The GTX 680 and GTX 770 both use the Gk104 gpu. Only the GTX 780 and GTX 780ti use the Gk110 gpu, same as the Titan. The GTX 770 isn't exactly the same as a GTX 680, it's more of a refined GTX 680. Taken from TPU's initial review of the GTX 770-

To be fair to NVIDIA, the GeForce GTX 770 isn't a complete and utter rebranding of the GeForce GTX 680 (Ă  la GeForce 8800 GT to 9800 GT). Sure, it is driven by the same GK104 silicon with the same exact core configuration of 1536 cores, 128 TMUs, 32 ROPs, and a 256-bit wide memory interface; but it features a different reference-design PCB that comes with a stronger VRM to support higher clock speeds, and the new GPU Boost 2.0 technology. The similarities the GTX 770 bears to the GTX 680 are in that sense more along the lines of those between the GeForce 8800 GTS-512 and GeForce 9800 GTX.

So you can go for 1150 sli and save some money for 2x 780 ti, it would be amazingly faster (about additional 50-70%) than 2x 770 on 2011.

Some people don't upgrade a whole system at once ( like my self ). I should of opted for the extra performance of the 2011 for when i upgrade my video card.

So say you got the 2011 for the extra performance and 3 years later jut upgrade the video card sure their might be the odd game you may have to lower some thing but the extra performance might be just what you needed. In the end might just help to squeeze another year or so though of the system.

Although when i looked some time ago before i got this system 2011 was a fair bit more.

What about instead of the 770 or 780(ti), have a look at the R9 290 or R9 290X - I'd only look at the custom cooled ones if it were my money though. That way you have 4GB default and it should have the horsepower to actually use all 4GB. I'd consider the 2X (crossfire) R9 290 Gigabyte Windforce or Sapphire's Tri-X here http://www.computerlounge.co.nz/components/componentview.asp?partid=21046

As others have said the 2011 platform should have a longer lifespan in the long run but I'd go 1150 and get some really awesome graphics cards seeing as the main purpose is for gaming.

lol I've generally been an Nvidia buyer but I was going to get a Sapphire R9290 for myself but only ended up getting the 780 I have now because my local shop was out of stock of 290s. I couldn't wait any longer haha. Also AMD has mantle coming soon so performance should be increased across the AMD range. Although only in games that support Mantle.

Review of the Sapphire card here;

Nothing wrong with AMD video cards. The R9 290 and 290X are awesome cards. I was going to get a 290x but was too impatient to wait for the custom heatsink models. If you do consider them, and plan to OC, get the R9 290 over the 290x. Test have shown to be almost no difference between the two cards when both are OC'ed (1 fps in BF3)

So you can go for 1150 sli and save some money for 2x 780 ti, it would be amazingly faster (about additional 50-70%) than 2x 770 on 2011.

not sure if 70% difference is accurate, but this is true in general.

I don't think there would be much performance difference between what we have now and the upcoming refreshed haswell range.

Haswell k rebrand 3-4 quarter? i can`t wait so long X) i'll bet on 1150 + 2x 780ti, would be best in slot. 100% You`ll be happy with that and i think its would be one of the best rigs in your city) if money is a problem you can switch mobo to asus maximus VI Hero, and total price will be about 4300$ What you`ll get comparing to 2011 system with same price? 70% additional performance in a game but amount of vram little bit lower. I recommend to look at higher hz panels instead of resolution, but 780ti performance in 4k res. is best too)
