New Computer doesn't meet expectations

Well I messed with overclocking a bit. But I'm afraid I broke something.

I ran 3d mark and after installing the best driver I could find while comparing the drivers of the best people in my category, I was about #5 out of the 17 people in my category.

I then decided to try overclocking. I checked the box in NVTweak to allow overclocking through the Nvidia control panel. I pressed the "find optimal" button.

Here's how it adjusted.
Memory Clock: from 725Mhz to 798Mhz
3d clock: from 580Mhz to 612Mhz

I ran 3dmark, and I wasn't rigorous in watching it but I never saw any sort of the graphical errors I read that I would encounter when overclocking too much, it looked normal.

The test put me WAY back, at like #12/17

I then ran the factory clock again, came to about #15

Ran the optimal ones again, came to about #12 again.

So basically after overclocking at the "relatively safe" speeds that Nvidia put me at, my graphics card is slower, even when I put it back to regular speeds.

*Sigh* Why me?

Btw guys thanks a TON for helping me out with my bazillion questions, don't know where I'd be without all the advice

The score I have now is significantly lower than when I posted the link, I don't know what happened

I just got finished putting together http://secure.newegg.com/NewVersion/wishlist/PublicWishDetail.asp?WishListNumber=4762168

I hit some rough spots, but it's finally up and running.

For some reason though it's just...not that impressive coming from an emachine that was

2.7 Ghz celeron
GeFroce FX 5200
256+512MB of memory

I'm running world of warcraft at almost max settings at like 30ish FPS.

What's wrong?!
fx5200 is a horrid card, as are all the FX line cards.
celeron=netburst=slow as hell
to little ram for gaming.

EDIT, soz wasnt paying proper attention to what i was reading, i saw those specs and well, i about spit, that was a nasty old system lol

7600gt

those are what are holding you back.

your chips a Nutburst core, thus VERY innefficent, and that video cards low end at best, the x1900gt rev2 or x1950pro are both FAR better cards(same chip just slitly diffrent clocks)

next time ask for advice b4 you build is all i can say, see this alot, people come to me with stuff they ordered online and want me to setup for them, but the parts arent good for what they wanted to do with them, the worst was the 3gz pentium-d setup a buddys father brought me, he ended up returning it and exchanging it for a CHEAP x2 board/chip combo and the video card(a 7800gs) was replaced with an x1900xt(on sale was around 250 shiped) newegg didnt charge him to much for the return/exchange because he ordered on a corp account(thru work), he wanted to game do productivity and cad stuff, pent-d wasnt the best choice for him, also the board was over priced like mad(it was over 300bucks!!!!!)

Yep, especially the D 805 is holding you back.
Nice CPU for `straight` applications, but not for complex games.
Though it has outstanding OC capabilities. :)

even overclocked it looses to an a64 x2 3600+ tho :), thats the 256k+256k 2.0gz dual core chip thats almost impossable to get in the states, but ausi's and such can get it everywhere(i want one damn it)

the 915 looses to the 3600+ b4 overclocking, after overclocking.......well, for the price you cant beet the 3600+/3800+ for gaming!!!!!!

Yup, my 3800X2 @ 2.8Ghz will smash a D805 @ 4Ghz. The D might come out ahead in video encoding tho.

So...what should I do? Got it all from newegg, it hasn't been 30 days yet, can I get something significantly better for a small price increase, and how much will I actually spend when it's all said and done?

It's very frustrating, getting something brand new and having it be bad when you thought It'd be amazing. I guess I just got a lot of bad advice, because I really did think I was getting good stuff.

BUT what's important is that I end up with something I'll be sastisfied with, what do you guys reccommend?

That D805 at 3.8ghz+ will be in the same territory as a 2.4-2.6ghz athlon X2 - i.e. plenty. Take it from somebody who uses one on an everyday basis. I would say you need to overclock it, and ideally get an x1950 pro.

The Pent D overclocked won't hold him back that mutch. It should be almost as fast as a Amd 3800x2 not overclocked. Which when both cores are used is plenty fast. Also a 7600gt when overclocked will handle almost any game out there its like having a x850xt with shader 3.0. I would recommend a 7900gs which can be had for about 144.00 on newegg or any of the following video cards x1800gto similar performance to 7600gt,x1800gto2, x1800xt(faster than x1900gt but has less shaders) had both I know,X1900gt 256 or x1900xt 256, 7900gto 512 mb if you can find one.

here is a link to to x1900gt http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814142084 I would try for a x1800xt on ebay they are faster than the x1900gt and can be found cheap used. The x1900gt has more shaders but at present is not faster.

here is one example http://cgi.ebay.com/ATI-RADEON-X180...ryZ80184QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

and x1900xt 256 which will smoke at x1900gt http://cgi.ebay.com/SAPPHIRE-Radeon...ryZ40158QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

the rev2 1900gt cards overclock very well from my exp, they are the same card as the 1950pro just lower clocks(like buyng xt insted of xtx)

and honestly depending on how much u spent, an amd overclocking system would probbly be cheaper.

biostar tforce550 mobo=80bucks
x2 3800+ is like 140-150(?)
same ram
x1900gt=150-160bucks
freezer64pro cooler=16-20bucks(if its not on sale this week then it probbly will be next week ;) )

that board clocks VERY well, just gotta update to the latest bios, its also got dfi expert class bios tweaks for overclocking!!!!

i would also swap that psu out with a fortron 400watt 12cm fan unit(like the one i have) as its a better quility unit!!!!!(oh yeah and cheaper to boot) dont worrie about the watt rating, rosewill and other blah brands fudge to get their watt numbers, like if you read the specs on some cheap psu's u will see that they can only do 550watts if the psu is at -20c!!!

and vzero, the p-d at 3.8 is in the same range as a stock 3800+!!!!!!(2gz)

now back on topic.
you could even go with a 3500+ singel core for around 80bucks and wait 6 months till k8l is out and then grab one of those for a nice perf boost!!!!

thats why i have the 3500+ a64 i have, because it is more then enought to hold me over till k8l arrives!!!!

Recommends ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

He better just get a DFI Lanparty series if the costs are cut that much. I think these days its better to get a X1950PRO; internal crossfire, you don't want to be outdated.

But you have to admit C2D is good. I just think that if you aren't getting a C2D, then you should get an AMD x2 Processor.

I agree with this 100%. pD is far too hot for it's performance level, and single core just doesn't make sense to me anymore, especially considering the way dual core prices have dropped.

I have the exact fan used in that article, I cannot get a refund on my cpu by now anyway.

BUT I can get a new video card, but it MUST be =< 165 and I can't get it from ebay. :(

Like I said, I really wasn't impressed with my current 7600GT 256MB, my 3dmark06 score was 3094 after being overlocked a significant amount (not max though)

Get the X1900 then see if you've got a "friend" that wants to buy an awesome D805 chip that overclocks like mad. Then get yourself an e6300. You've got a ds3 mb right?
You'll be a happy mofo with that setup & some overclocking fun.

the x1900gt rev2(what ur gonna get at newegg for 160bucks or less) is the EXECT SAME CORE/CARD as the 1950pro, just lower default clocks, u can easly get those clocks up eather with overdrive/atitool OR a bios flash!!!!!

why spend more for the exect same hadware?
