Hi guys,

I bought a 2600k + Asrock Z68 Extreme 4 mobo yesterday. I have been trying to overclock the CPU but the temps are going above 80C with 1.35V for 4.5GHz (maybe 4.6GHz too) with my Thermalright MUX-120 push/pull with Enermax T.B.Silent fans.

I'm wondering whether to buy a new cooler, since the summer heat is coming soon.

I will list a few options and can you select the best options for me? Maybe I should first try reseating the cooler and see if it does better.

1 Scythe Ninja 3 JPY 3,360
2 Scythe Mine 2 JPY 3,650
3 Scythe Yasya SCYS-1000 JPY 3,770
4 Titan Fenrir JPY 4,279
5 Corsair A70 JPY 4,350
6 TherMax EclipseII TherMax EclipseII JPY 4,870

I HAZ ONE AND IZ LOVZ IT.

Seriously, my A70 has great temps for an air cooler. I have mine running with two zalman 100 CFM fans. They are really quiet for that CFM

I second the Corsair A70. I actually use 1 fan going through a resistor. Silent as a mouse and my 2500k never exceeds 70 when benching/priming at 4.5GHz. Obviously with the 2600K you will probably have to run it without the resistor to offer superior cooling.

With two fans, it's great.

get whatever is cheap, the chips are cooler than 1156 or 1366 chips by almost 10*C.

What kind of case do you run? I tested the best buy rocketfish cooler which is essentially a Hyper 212+ and my 2500K at 4.6Ghz doesn't even break 65C.

OK, two things my friend.

1. I have an Antec 300 case, so with all the stuff inside, it is so hard to work with. But the airflow seems fine as I have cleared the airflow paths.

2. This could be the cause. In the morning, I ran LinX with AVX with 6GB RAM and the temps were reaching almost 90C in a few minutes as per CoreTemp. But, when I touched the heatsink (all be it the top of the sink which may not be as accurate as the heatpipes or even fins in the middle), it was only slightly warm, say around 45C give or take. The air coming out of the exhaust was nothing worrying too. For example, when my HD5870 is under 70C, the air it puts out is very hot. Maybe it won't be same with the CPU, but I would expect the CPU to be about 60C, when the core was at 90C, would you not?

So I think the problem could be with the contact. I'm certain it is not with the mounting, but could be with the thermal paste (it is one year old anyways), how much paste was used and how flat the HSF base is.

So what I am going to when I get home is this.

1. I would remove the left side panel and aim a fan towards the inside of the case
2. If it doesn't bring down the temps, it means the airflow is OK. So I would take out the HSF, and see if I have not applied thermal paste correctly, and I will use the same old thermal paste again.
3. If it doesn't work, I will use the hotplate and see if the heat gets transferred properly to the fins. Of course I cannot use the fans nor control the temps of the hotplate, but I will turn it ON for a few seconds and place the HS for a few seconds and see how it works. If it doesn't transfer heat quickly, something is wrong with the cooler itself.
4. If there seems to be no problem with the cooler, I would lap it!
5. If all else fails, I will buy a new cooler because this has to stop! >_<

I wish I could buy a new case, but I don't know how to dump this case. Maybe I will ask a friend if he wants it free of charge, in which case this leads to another problem. I need a new case! XD

On that list, the Silver Arrow is the outright best and the A70 is the best value.

I'd also consider a Hyper 212+ if available and significantly cheaper than the A70 or a Cogage True Spirit /w 1155 kit if available and not much more than the A70.

Just to give you an idea of temps with a 2500k @ 4.5 GHz and 212+ under linpack AVX...about 71C with quiet case cooling and 2x 1600 RPM PWM fans on the heatsink. Normal "heavy" loads like BC2 or h.264 encoding it doesn't go over the target 50C set for the PWM fans.

Its time for a new case bro. No matter what cpu cooler you use it'll be choked off by the non existent airflow of the 300

oh dear! that was what i was afraid of.

any recommendations? if i go for a new case, i need to have few things.
1. 2x2.5 inch bays
2. 3x3.5 inch bays or more (at least 3)
3. long video card support
4. quiet fans, but i have a bunch of 120mm ones so as long as they fit, i'm fine.
5. good cable management for a non-modular PSU
6. good build quality as in no vibrations. there is a vibration noise coming from the 300 and i can't figure out from where >_<
7. also drive bays in 90 degree rotated position so i can hide the cables.

I say get the Corsair H60. The three hundred has two 120mm intakes and a 120mm and 140mm exhaust. How exactly is that choked off?

Why not go all the way and get the H70?

I've had loads of overclocking fun with it :toast: (on a 950)

You said the thermal paste is a year old? You mean the tube has been sitting around for a year or you have the same paste on the heat sink for a year?

I would definitely try and reseat it with some new, good TIM. What are you using anyways?
