A friend is about to buy a new gaming computer. His budget is 1300€ (arround 1800USD)

His monitor is IPS 23" 1080p.
No keyboard or mouse needed.
He don't want any OC or SLI/Crossfire.

Can you help me?

Personally, if I were making a gaming rig and I weren't going to be overclocking, I would consider an i5 4670S or 4670 instead of the 4770 and put that extra money saved towards a 240Gb 840 Evo instead of the 120Gb. I would personally prefer a more reputable brand on the PSU, but that's just me.

I would also consider the following for memory depending on the price in your region.

ok, so first oficial all, change CPU to i5 4670.
i'll make a search for that crucial ram.

the psu is not bada at all. is 80+ silver. the brand is not as known as corsair or seasonic, but is quite good.
650W is enough?
what about the graphics card? too much for 1920x1080 gaming?.

Very hard to do. I bought an £800 Titan in Feb 2012 and 9 months later it was being bested (at stock) by 290X and 780Ti. Instead of future proof, think about a time before becoming obsolete. 2-3 years is about optimum, I'd say. The CPU will last longer than the GPU. The 780 can be sli'd (I know you said not an option) but seriously - you can't future proof a gaming build with a single gfx card.

Well it was totally obvious, didn't you see it coming?

and to OP: yeah a i5 4670 or even i5 4440 would ok be. If you are not overclocking, the difference is just minimal. The "K" versions with their overclockability for no more money than the non-K countrerparts is what makes these CPUs futureproof.

I also agree that you should look for a 1866mhz c9 ram and replace the PSU with a more reputable brand. 650W for a single GPU system is LARGELY enough though. I personally think that at 1080p a GTX770 will be perfectly fine for 2-3 years, but if your friend upgrades screen resolution then its another thing. Meanwhile, for a the 250GB version of the SSD and maybe consider another brand than Seagate, FYI techspot.com reported that Hitachi was judged as the most reliable HDD company and Seagate as the worst ever.

Finally, nice choice of PC case, but have a look at the Fractal Midi 2 as well, my flatmate got it and I guarantee its awesome. Your choice.

Yes, in fact I did. I knew (the rumours) AMD had a late Autumn release planned (Hawaii). Point was - you don't get to 'future proof' a PC unless you think of a timeline.

I think the 780 (or 290X) is the better option than a 770. He wants it to last as long as possible under a certain budget. A 290X is around 25% faster than a 770 at 1080p (or 33% depending on what way you do your percentile semantics).

The table below (BF4 @ 1080p) is one of the few i found quickly with a 770 in it. They also do very good tests those Germans!

770 = 75 fps average
780 = 86.4 fps average
290x = 102.5 fps average

Well the54thvoid, the OP actually had an NVidia card in mind so I just though I'd let him know he could go for a lower model without issues. I definitely agree than an AMD 290 or 290x with aftermarket cooler is the current best choice.

The thing is that 475 Euros is not so bad for an evga acx gtx780 and a gtx770 should be quite cheaper, so why not... I'm pretty sure that what will come after the first revision Maxwell cards will be 200% faster than a Titan anyway, and that would be in around 2 years from now. (at least when I see the 3dMark11 difference between my very old HD5870 and my older HD7970 doing 300% in that bench in ~3 years time... that's how I see things..)

Everything is fine. If it's in the budget why not get the i7. Given that nothing dramatic happens in the next couple of years a single high-end card will serve well within this period. Unless he wants only NV, the Sapphire Tri-x 290 is a much better value at under 400.

To this price need to add
80€ RAM Crucial Ballistix Tactical 8Gb (2x4096Mb) - PC12800 - CL8 (find it in other shop)
+-80€ HDD 2TB. W.D Caviar Green 2TB SATA III for example. (can't find Hitachi 2tb HDD) Toshiba DT01ACA200 2TB

Total amount is around 1200€.


Choosing between 780 and 290 is difficult.
Personally, I like Nvidia (physix, Gforce Experience, Shadowplay, cooler, more silent...) but the money says AMD is doing very good. 290 is 60€ less, and performs almost the same.
It's a tricky choice.

I need to contact my friend to know what he wants. Is his money.

dont go wd green. seagate baracuda or wd red (wb blacks are good too but price is too high for desktop pc)

edit: this toshiba also is good choice (or 2tb version for 76)

edit2: stick with R4 case it offer better noise insulation and is more stylish.

First, it is not a bad config. I can not find any thing wrong with it.

FSP: Not a big name here in the USA in the retail market, but I bet people would be surprised by how many of the PSU's out there are actually FSP with someone else's name on it.
You have had chosen a quiet case. Careful selection of the rest of your components can could result in an almost silent PC. The item that sticks out is the CPU cooler. While it is not loud, there are quieter choices but they will, unfortunately, cost more. A MSI GTX 780 gaming is quieter than the EVGA that you chose.
Life is not fair. A sub paragraph under that is: There is no way to future proof a PC. Buying as much GPU as you can afford is wise, IMHO. I think the GTX 780 is the best choice at this time from Nvidia, the R9 290 from AMD.
As for the CPU, past wisdom has been to avoid the HT'd CPU's, but games are becoming more multi-threaded all the time. I no longer think that it is a waste of money to build a gaming system with a HT'd CPU. Remember that the consoles are now based on 8 "core" CPU's.
If you are going to get an optical drive, why not Blu-ray?

As I said, this is not my money, my friend has the last word. I just offer him many choices.

About the Blu-ray, I told him to not buy any optic device (I don't have and I don't need it), but he want's a DVD. Besides, Blu-ray is very expensive compared with DVD.

get 750W rm. for only 7euro price difference 750 is more future proof then 650.

Sapphire 290 Tri-X is the best overall for its money. And "mantle" hasn't shown up yet. Coming soon though. So, it may become much more future-proof than what it already is.

looks great. i like it, for me personally 4670k wins vs 4670 non k. just to have that ability to add 10-15% cpu power, but, again...I'm still on E8400 (6years already) what do i know

Basically, i5 4670 and EVGA 780 ACX.

The computer will arrive within a couple of days.
