New gpu for light gaming RX570/580

Hello all. I am building a rig for a friend and I'm not sure what gpu to put in the rig. The pc has an i5 4690, 16gb ddr3 1600, 128gb ssd, 2tb hdd, an 650w corsair psu and a 27 1080p display... He have like 100 euros for the gpu and i found two nice cards for him, a Sapphire RX570 nitro+ 8gb and a RX580 nitro+ 4gb. My question is, what gpu is better for 1080p gaming (he wants to play games like Gta5, tomb raider, battlefield 5, farcry 5, etc). Thanks in advance, and i wait for your opinions...

Honestly, I would go for the 580. When you are in those price points, the grunt is not there to really take advantage of the extra 4GB. Just my two cents.

In most titles, yes. Obviously, as time goes on settings will need to be turned down. The extra 4GB of the 570 will likely not be useful but the extra grunt of the 580 will.

I own both the cards and to tell you the truth there is no noticeable difference when playing 1080p, to be future proof id go with the one with the most vram, 4gb is good today but 8gb is better for tomorrow. charl.

4GB is fine for midrange, the RX580 has fine balance in that regard. Power consumption is another story, but performance is good.

Id go 580 4Gb, The 570 8gb is a nice card to have, but he's not likely going to use more than the 4gb's provided by the 580 ime.

I have a GTX 980 4 GB & rhe 970, as well as a 1070 with 8gb's. I can say beyond a shadow of a doubt ,that I would take more power over more ram , especially ram that's not going to be used at low resolution

I found another RX580 but this time with 8Gb, it's a XFX GTS at 120 euros, it's a little more money but i think it's would be a nice choice, i even found a gtx 1060 6Gb at 160 euros but that's a stretch for him... Monday or Tuesday i will purchase something for him....

The 580 will go a ways.

GTS is A upper Line of card from XFX to boot.

8 GB is useless at 1080p. For a good '"eye opener" on the VRAM issue check out the MSI 1060 3GB review here on TPU. I shows that the 3 GB model is 6% slower than the 6GB model. But before ya jump to conclusions, the 6 GB model has 10% more shaders and that's where the extra fps comes from. if it was VRAM, then we'd see that 6% jump substantially at 1440p, but it doesn't budge.

I doubt you are going to find a new 580 anywhere near €100 ... lowest I found was €228.00 ... doesn't get any better with a GTX 1060 which are running €210-ish

The 1060s are very overclockable ... I did a comparison posted here a few weeks back using the data in TPus review and with both cards overclocked, the 1060 outperformed the 590.

Put the 20 euros towards a case of beer or something useful. 8GB vram will have little use for 1080.

I had a R9 390 8Gb.
My eldest son has a 4670+290 4GB
So I gave that 390 to my eldest son, he said: probably won't make a difference.
Well, it did, or so he now claims. So is it the extra 4GB? Is it the 390 chip? Most likely not the latter.
In any case, while not earthshaking, the r9 390 does better in his system than the sapphire 290.
So if you can afford it, spend it. That's for the 8GB card ofcourse.

ps. he does game in 4k btw, at reduced settings ofcourse.

390/X are a clock boosted 290/X. I could inject 390 ram timings and clocks in my card and be even with it other than half the ram not there.

Yup i just happened to buy this card not knowing 8GB parts would be out at all. Still a good looking effective part for sure lol

In the OPS case, we are talking about a 8GB RX570 and a 4GB RX580 ... whereas the 8 GB might have an impact in 5-10% games, at 1080p, it's not going to mean a lot. Dropping a GPU tier to pick up 4 GB for 1080p is not something I'd consider. At 2160k, I don't consider either card as adequate. The 580 8Gb is only capable of :

Witcher 3 = 26 fps
Far Cry Primal = 26 fps
ROTR = 25 fps

But at 1080p, the 580 is going to get you well into the 70s most of the time and I just don't see the extra VRAM offsetting the advantage of the bigger / better GPU.
