According to Fudzilla:

Nvidia's refurbished G92-based 9800 GTX will launch in the last week of March. The card will cost €399 and it will have 768MB of memory.

It will also have two SLI bridges and it will support Tri SLI. The quad SLI will remain the thing for 9800 GX2 cards and you won’t be able to use more than four chips at the same time.

The last one to complete the Geforce 9 high-end to performance line up is 9800GTS, but we don’t know when that should launch. It should probably launch a bit later.

But this info is in conflict with what we "knew" already. According to Fudzilla the card will come with 768MB, so it will have 384bit memory interface and 24 ROPs and not 256bit and 16 ROP, as has been stated before. No info about Stream Processors, but if Nvidia mantains the same SP/ROP ratio as in 8800 GTS the card would have 192 SPs. I wouldn't place a bet on this though, but who knows?

What do you think guys? Which source should we believe? Yeah some sites have posted benchmarks, but were those benchmarks of the 9800GTX really? What if they were of the 9800 GTS? I guess we would only know at launch time.

g92 base 8800gts already has 128shaders with 24 rop's on a 256bit mem interface, so this news would only change the mem bit. which should be the same as the 8800gtx and ultra at 384bit as you stated.

either way it's hard to tell at this point, but the 9800gtx still isn't going to seem tempting for those with any of the current highend nv's (8800gtx, ultra, gt, and g92 based gts)

That chart is wrong!! :twitch:

G92 8800 GTS has 16 ROPs and G80 8800 GTS has 20 ROPS.

In G80 and G92 ROPs are tied together in clusters of 4 raster units and 1 64 bit memory interface. That way GTX has 6 clusters that total 24 ROPs and 384bits. G80 GTS has 5 clusters (5x4=20, 5x64=320), GT and G92 GTS have 4 (4x4=16, 4x64=256) and such. It works for the entire 8 series.

It's the same for Stream Processors and Texture Mapping Units, but in G80 each cluster has:

16 SP - 8 TMU -4 TAU (texture address units)

and G92 (G84, G86)

16 SP - 8 TMU - 8 TAU

- GTX, Ultra and G92 GTS have 8 of those clusters,
- GT has 7 clusters,
- G80 GTS and GS have 6.

8800 GTX ---> http://techreport.com/articles.x/11211
8800 GT ----> http://techreport.com/articles.x/13479/1
8800 GTS ---> http://techreport.com/articles.x/13772

Read the intro to all of them (Meet the...), they explain it very well. On the GTX one there's even an overview picture of the marchitecture, so you can see the clusters better. Check them out.

I must agree with you there though. ;)

Agreed! "what we know" = what we have heard from other contradicting sources, I sometimes think some sites like to put these kind of headlines up to encourage "hits" on the sites.

I really have not got a clue what it will be, I take most pre-release speculation as hype until I see my first full pre- release review from a reputable site, then I start paying attention and looking at my wallet.

I think you hit the nail on the head here. I bet they have driven more traffic their way just by putting this on their site.

I really have not got a clue what it will be, I take most pre-release speculation as hype until I see my first full pre- release review from a reputable site, then I start paying attention and looking at my wallet.

But that's not funny! It's like a thriller, it's just funnier if you try to guess who's the murderer before the film ends. I like trying to figure out which info is feasible and which not, and out of there I try ro figure out the rest of the specs.

For example in this case I find more feasible Fudzilla's version because three things that they said in vr-zone.

1- The card comes with 12 layer PCB.
2- The card is longer than 8800 GTS, as long as 8800 GTX.
3 - It has two 6-pin conectors instead of one and 168W TDP.

Those three things were really strange to me. They didn't fit well with the slightly overclocked 8800 GTS theory IMO. Why would they make a longer and complex PCB if the card was basically the same? Why put two 6-pin conectors and why the card is 168W TDP if G92 is 110W AFAIK? From the beginning I felt there was something wrong there.

Now:

1- If the card has to fit a more complex (384bit) chip, which will have more pins a more complex PCB makes more sense.
2- If the card has to fit 12 memory chips instead of 8, a longer PCB makes sense.
3- More complex chip, more memory...

Now why I take those three things as feasible and not the rest? Well I know that most of pre-release info and specially "leaked" info is hype and FUD for the most part, but the best way, the only way to lie properly, is mix lies with some truth (learnt this from a film, but can't remember which one. It works actually :laugh:). And how to know what is true and what not? You can't, but you can use some statistics and if two "lies" fit one with each other, you have something to start with. Start the speculation, that is. :D

Proof that 9800GTX is 16 ROPs/256bit.

And how can they be so sure that's 9800 GTX and not GTS, for example? Just guessing...

Remember that according to the media 9800GTX was G90 (512bit, GDDR5, +1TFlop), that lately changed its codename to G92, that ended up being 8800GT. Then changed name to G100 (384 SP, 32 ROPs, 512 bit...) and later GT200 (unknown specs or the same as G100 AFAIK). But in the end is something based on G92, that not even two sites agree to what really is. So why the card that thay have is, must be 9800GTX? There's too many FUD and hype to don't consider all this another trick.

It's fun to speculate to some degree, and who to say what are the specification on the 9800GTX. Its all free publicity for NVIDIA and we will find out when the 9800GTX is released.
Could the spec be
512bit memory
DX 10.1
DDR5 memory
1GB or 2GB
But the one thing we can all agree on its going to be expensive.

Proof that 9800GTX is 16 ROPs/256bit.

proof is a fairly "relative" thing in your example at least.......in the true sense of the word, some pictures of a graphics card posted on the internet is far away from being proof, now I am not for one minute suggesting that one article is right and another is wrong, am just saying I prefer to wait before I am convinced.

Benchmark Scores It does boot up? I think.
Given 9800GTX will launch 2½ weeks from now it's pretty clear it's just a relabeled 8800GTS with a 4th phase.

how so, Nvidia has had more than a few weeks to work on it, more like 6 months, the G92 was rushed out and cut down, we all know that.

As for proof, prove thats not the 9800GTS/GT/GS?
