I don't know if this is a common situation or not since I generally never inspect my laptops when I purchase them, however....

Recently I purchased a brand new Lenovo laptop for $350 from Best Buy. I had the item shipped to me from a warehouse in Oregon. The laptop arrived today. The box appeared un-opened and even had a sticker saying "Do not open if removed"

So I unboxed the laptop. Upon opening the laptop I noticed some smudges on the screen. So I flashed my flashlight on it. I instantly saw about 2 finger prints, along with some hardened material that appeared to be scratches on the screen. I took my microfiber cloth, wiped down the screen for about 3 minutes and the screen now looks new. The rest of the laptop appears to be blemish free.

So my question is, why did the laptop arrive like this? Should I raise hell and return it, or is this common occurance? Did this happen during assembly of the laptop?

You wiped off the evidence! Kidding. I would think finger prints from factory and maybe quality control did not wipe before packaging?

All production lines have "checkers" who pop units off the line at random and do whatever analysis / tests on an item to ensure that the automated quality control systems in place earlier on in the line are doing their jobs properly.

But even these checkers themselves get worn down after a long day - the hardened substance you found was probably some kind of screen polish they use to clean off fingerprints usually caused during additional checks / whatever hand assembly may also be involved in the manufacture process. Probably started off being a thick waxy liquid, and now dried up.

Most likely scenario your laptop was inspected even more thoroughly than the rest that day. Probably not a bad thing.

just be aware that best buy stores have been found guilty on numerous occasions of selling a returned laptop as "new". We had a news story here that one purchaser even found photos and porn on her "new " laptop from best buy

LOL, they are called "Quality Control" not checkers.

LOL, they are called "Quality Control" not checkers.

Not everyone on earth lives in your country, speaks your language, and uses your terms - there is an entire planet outside your door - however confusing this may be to some.

I was not attempting to re-title the job description - I was simply attempting to quickly translate a description of what they do and how the fingerprints may have come to be.

Beyond this I do not even see how the fact that in your environment you have one specific term for the job is even relevant to the original question, or the explanation.

Lets assume however it IS, you will actually find that a "checker" is the EXACT translation for the original language term for many hundreds of thousands of production line workers all around the world. "Quality Control" Is a specifically English term that is not used in the very large majority of the world's native tongues.

By this mathematical argument I could very easily submit that YOU are indeed both wrong and ignorant, however I would never feel comfortable being as conceited as to expect everyone else on earth to use my terminology simply because I am too closed to the world to see that others may have their own.

Then of course there is the fact that I floated it in quotes to begin with, a relatively internationally accepted way of saying that you are free to interpret the title however you choose. You know, because the internet goes ALL OVER the world...

Beyond all of this there is the fact that most laptops are not checked in an English language country to begin with, and given this the workers doing the checking are most unlikely to have English language job titles - lets also just forget about that.

But that's just me... What do I know.

I am thinking of simply returning the Laptop tomorrow despite the fact that I was able to clean the screen. Since I am so OCD, it's really messing with my head.

I know the feeling :\ - But in all seriousness it really is probably just a forgetful cleanup job - many production lines clean the screens by hand - even iProducts - it's safer for the screens. Speaking of which, all this talk of OCD and screen cleaning now has me noticing how dirty mine is :(
