Hi. My mom just bought a new Asus x59sl laptop with the following specs:
Core2Duo T5450 @ 1.66 ghz
2 GB RAM( single DIMM)
Mobility Radeon HD3470(64 bits, 256 MB VRAM)
160 GB HDD
My own laptop is an older packard bell model:
Core2Duo T5500 @ 1.66 ghz
2 GB RAM (dual channel)
MR X1700( 64 bits, 128 MB VRAM)
100 GB HDD.
Both are running Vista Ultimate X86.
As you can see, these laptops should be nearly identical performance-wise.
Here's what i don't understand: in 3dmark06(default, 1280x800), the older laptop(mine, with the x1700) gets 1400-1500 pts. The new one(with the hd3470) gets around 1600-1650. No surprise here, since the hd3470 is 2 generations newer. However, the performance in games seems worse. Crysis demo runs significantly worse on the hd3470(EXACT same settings as the x1700 - 848x480 res, all low except for water quality(medium) and sound quality(medium)). I even get a little and ocasional chugging in ut2004 on very big map full to the brim with bots.
The drivers on the hd3470 were catalysts 9.4, moidified with the Driverheaven mobility modder. The x1700 has 8.12 drivers, since newer ones seem to need a modified .inf to work.
My question is this: which of these two cards are better for gaming? Please remember that both have a 64-bit interface, but the hd3470 has twice the vram(256 vs 128).
Does my old, trusty x1700 still beat a card that has twice the vram and is 2 generations newer or is there something else here?
I have 3 other theories:
1. The asus with the 3470 has a SiS chipset, which i heard are terrible. Does this affect performance? The x1700 packard bell uses intel 945
2. The asus only has one DIMM, while the packard Bell has 2 and uses dual channel.
3. Since the hd3470 supports DX10 and x1700 doesn't, crysis uses DX10 which kills performance.
What do you think? And sorry for this long post. Thanks in advance.
