Hey Guys,

I am going to finally sell my desktop rig and buy a laptop. Now I want your thoughts. I love in Australia, my budget is around $1300.

What are your suggestions? What to have in it, what not to have in it, what mobile graphics cards are good these days?
I will be playing a couple of games here and there (diablo 3, far cry 3, warz, star wars online), but apart from that just standard stuff, bit of odds and ends. MAYBE rare photoshop cs5 work which will munch resources abit..anyway open to suggestions!

I think I definitely have to have an SSD in it..and atleast a 3rd gen i7..
But what do you guys think =)

Thanks all

That one looks good in specs, but is completely shit. Here is a review: http://www.notebookcheck.net/Review-MSI-GX60-Notebook.86283.0.html, note the cpu si slower in this one than the one you selected, but it completely puts the 8970 out of purpose, delivering much worse performance than expected. The limitation is just not worth it. Better take an Intel CPU 3/4th gen and a lower GPU and it will still fare better overall.

what you want is to have mat screen
and deffinitely dont want glare.
also be sure discrete card has at least 256bit vram interface
dont sell monitor kb and mouse from old pc. at home they are much more comfortable the laptop's one
also think about laptop cooler too. no matter what msi promise about cooling it will be better with cooler. something like cm's notepal u2 or u2 plus

Can you make a suggestion of a better laptop perhaps?

I was thinking about making sure that the machine did have a 4th gen i7..would be nice.. ;) I found a Lenovo ideapad that had a 4th gen i7 but its not in Australia yet =(

I would not buy a laptop that has AMD's Enduro or Nvidia's Optimus technologies until you read up on lots of the issues they are known to have. Although they have been around for a while now, they still don't have all the kinks worked out. You'll find lots of threads here at TPU with users experiencing issues with them.

can you give online shops you can buy from

edit:
check prices for this one http://www.toshiba.eu/laptops/qosmio/qosmio-x70-a/qosmio-x70-a-112/ but i doubt it will cost less then 2-3k

edit2:
btw you have pritty decent rig. why you want to torture yourslef with gaming laptop. performance wont be at the half of your current rig and mobility is the same as your destop pc (i have scuh 4.5kg brick on my desk, trust me it is anything but mobile).
problems with overheating and cleaning, gpus are moderate (not to say inferior), slow hdd which you have to replace if you dont want to retire before copy/load is finished.
why dont you get 8320 and 770/7970 and buy beer for the rest of the money. or wait a few mounts and see what new hd9xxx has to offer. also you can change 212 with panteck ph-tc14 or aio water and you will have top of the line pc at half of the price of the laptop

It is a good point. Basically I don't use my desktop nearlly as much as i would like. If I had a laptop I could take it with me to work, I could take it on holidays/trips away.

My thoughts are I could keep my desktop and spend some money on it but I wouldn't use it.I could spend the same money on a laptop and use it much more because of the portability andconvenience of having it. Besides that I don't do A LOT of gaming. But if you guys reckon that powerful laptops are no good I might have to re think what I am going to do..

Thanks fellas!! :)

well if you want to take use of mobility then dont go gaming laptop.
3.5kg+ is too far away from comfortable to carry around.
my qosmio is 4.5kg itself. together with nice big 1kg charger and it comes 5.5kg. 20 mins with backpack and back starts to hurt even that backpack is good and comfortable.

i would advice you to get a low to mid range 15.6" laptop with decent apu so that you have good graphics when you want to play and around 2kg laptop for better mobility. and price would be around half of that msi gx
check those out
or 400-900aud range

this one is not bad either

You do have a good point there. Its all about a powerful machine that has crap battery life and weighs a tonne, or a mid range which has better battery life and doesn't weigh as much..

Good advice mate!Thank you =) I think you do have a valid point. I might go with a midrange.. Any brands in particular to stay away from when getting a laptop??

I just recently picked up an MSI GE60 (the 20E model with the i7-4700MQ). Installed a 128GB msata SSD. Solid laptop so far, not sure what prices are like for it in Australia though.

JG :toast:

i heard that acer droped qulity lately but i cant say it from personal experiance.
basicly with all brands you will have overheating issues especially if get laptop with dedicated graphics so you will need cooler pad for sure. i have pointed you at cm notepal cause they can be used as carry bag too but you have to remove fans and have another bag for them.

doh!!I think I found one...
http://www.pccasegear.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=1013&products_id=24738

This looks decent. And the reviews say it is decent on battery life.
It is thin as well.. *sigh...soooo hard to choose...lol

this one might be better
100$ more for 17.3" and 750gb HHD as addition to ssd but little sacrifice on graphics and it is still under 3kg.

edit: this http://www.affordablelaptops.com.au/ is awesome
those metabox are good choice. you can customize everything and yet price is lower then msi.
if only that gx60 wasnt 3.5kg and with so weak cpu, had better wifi and ssd and....
fuck this better get metabox and make it fit to you

I'm suffering here too, Either a W230st or a GE40! I still can't make up my mind :banghead:

So I ended up getting this one everybody!

http://www.msi.com/product/nb/GE40-2OC-Dragon-Eyes.html#overview

I have been using it for about 4 days now. My first impression is FANTASTIC! Its extremely quick, the touchpad has separate buttons not the combined things hidden under the track pad that don't seem to work properly..The screen was rated poorly in the reviews I read but I think it looks fine! I haven't really played many games yet, but under a stress test the laptop performed brilliantly. Its battery life has been fantastic considering the powerhouse that it is, the longest I have been on is about 4.5 hours and it still had about 40% left.

The 4th gen i7 seems to go very well! temps have been very good. I usually just sit it on my lap and there hasn't been a time when I have noticed it being too hot at all.

It came with windows 8..which I used for about a day..then installed windows 7. because the laptop wasn't touch screen, navigation was abit fiddly and flimsy, so I rolled back to 7 and this is fully supported (driver wise) by MSI.

My ONLY issue was the backlit keyboard. That is a disappointment for me but considering how cheap it was for this rig I wasn't too fussed. The goods certainly out-weigh the bads!
If anyone is looking for a decent laptop that has power, that has good battery life, that doesn't weigh the earth, doesn't cost toooo much, can game well, and yet still can be an everyday functional machine. I highly recommend this! VERY happy so far =)

For all those who wanted to know what I thought, there you have it!

Hope this has helped anyone who took forever to choose one like me..
