Hi,

I currently have a q6600 G0 on an asus P5B E Plus.

Its running completly stable at 440 x 8 or 3.52Ghz. I've just bought a quad so if my testing methods sound wrong please tell me how it should be done.

Tested this setting by running Prime95 overnight which was just over 9 hours. Highest core temp was 69 degrees C.

Now, i have tried setting the Q6600 at a higher clock and it simply won't budge. Tried everything. More volts, slacker ram timmings so on.

My question is do you think i may be limited by the old P965 chipset?

I have been meaning to get a new motherboard and i think maybe the Asus Maximus Formula X38.

Will i see an improvement with this board and is this a decent board????

Any help would be great cheers.

My Q6600 with Maximus Formula can run stable with 440FSB almost on default (CPU voltage increase). FSB450 = 3.6GHz is a hard task but still possible with high NB voltage, CPU PLL voltage and other adjustments. (I have 4x1 GB AxeRam DDR2 1200MHz). But the procesor can reach without problems 425 x 9 = 3825MHz all on air. For more overclock I supose water have to be used :).

Thanks for the reply dolf. A few people are telling me it would make no difference and that theres no point to a new board.

I totally disagree with that. I've seen so many reviews that tested several motherboards and each has required different voltages and have reached higher or lower overclocks.

So do you think the Maximus Formula may allow me some extra Mhz? Even if i could achieve the same clock with a lower voltage i'd be happy, i'm at 1.39v.

Ok i tried a setting similar to yours before leaving the flat this morning. 9 x 420 or 3.78Ghz. I ran 3DMark6 and got the highest score i have ever achieved - 15966:D. Thats with a single Msi 8800gt @ 756/1850/2000, 2gigs XMS Pro LED ram and the good old P5B E Plus.

I left prim95 running so heres hoping it still is when i get back to the house.

Do you still think a new board may be benificial?

On the test's here in the UK the ASUS P5K wifi premuim came out on top with OC speed over the X38 ASUS mobo

So you think the P35 boards are better? What about the P5K Deluxe?

I traded a gigabyte 965 for an msi p35 and the changes are really small. That`s not to say you wouldn`t see any improvement at all. It`s your money..

Well i had a bit of cash spare so i purchased a P5K Premium and the new OCZ Vendetta 2.

I'd like to achieve as 'high and stable' an overclock as i can. But i know the score...

It may not make any difference at all. However, this Q6600 booted fine in to windows up to 4.05Ghz!! but crashed soon into stressing and infact no settings will make it stable above the 3.7 mark. Think stability issues may be due to heat the cores reach 70 when set at 3.7 safe to say its not set there now.

Ill see what happens - - maybe post some results. Cheers :toast:

I agree, maybe with better cooling will be able to clock higher, 70c is a lot of heat in my opinion.
