I heard with the new Physx software you can enable a seperate gpu to do only Physx.

You can have a 8600gt to do physx alongside another card.

Since it is only doing Physx and not SLI i think you can do this on crossfire boards.

What a great question, sorry not to be posting with an answer, but this I got to hear the answer too. I may pick myself up a £30 8 series if this turns out to be true and worth it. :D

Found the answer, yes you can!!! :D:D:D:D:D:D

http://www.firingsquad.com/hardware/nvidia_geforce_physx_performance/page2.asp

It says :

In SLI mode, each GPU in your system shares the physics processing and graphics workload evenly. This is the default mode when SLI is enabled in the ForceWare control panel

In multi-GPU mode, one GPU handles all graphics duties, while the second card is solely responsible for tackling all physics commands. Under this mode end users can mix and match different cards. For instance, someone who purchased a GeForce 8800 GT last year can run this card for physics, and then pick up a brand new GeForce GTX 280 to run as the primary graphics card for gaming. An SLI motherboard isn’t required for this mode either, both SLI and non-SLI motherboards are supported.:D

One limitation of this mode under Vista is that a second monitor must be attached to run PhysX on the secondary GPU, and you must extend the Vista desktop onto this secondary monitor. According to NVIDIA this limitation is related to the Windows Vista display driver model (WDDM). However, the same limitation does not exist in Windows XP. (so glad my monitor has two inputs :D )

what does that mean ?

Sorry missed a bit on the copy and paste:

If you don’t have a second monitor available, you can also run a second display cable from your monitor to the second GeForce card running PhysX.

NVIDIA is working on a workaround for this issue, but we don’t have an ETA on when this will be available or how it will work.

I'm getting worse performance in the Nurien demo with a second card doing PhysX. With my 8600GT doing Physx and my 8800GTS 512 for the main display I get 35fps. With the 8800GTS 512 doing both I get 40fps. I guess I will check out some games that use PhysX but I'm kind of shocked by that. If it is this way across the board then there isn't any advantage to using a lesser second card for PhysX.

well get a secondhand 8800GT or 8800GTS 320 or even an 8800GS to run your physx on

It seems to me that would be a silly waste of money. Anybody else try similar testing?

from my testing.. single card yields better results overall unless the 2 cards are SLI together ^___~

ATI & NVIDIA Drivers may conflict, updated drivers needed for ATI and NVIDIA cards setup to work together, and I heard this questions over and over again 100+ time in 50 threads... Someone should make a thread with everything on it.

GTX260 as physx processor gave me 2000 points better score in fluidmark physx test than 8800gts 320mb.
