Hey people, It's new rig time for me. I used to be a member of Geforce zone later ausfx, But the site appears to have long gone! LOL shows how long it's been since i did anything involving a new system for myself.
To get you in the mood i'll let you laugh at what i've been running for the past 5 years!
939 X2 3800, clocked at 2.9Ghz.
2Gb DDR1 corsair.
X1950 pro 512 (agp!!!!!!)
N-force 3 ultra agp board.
This rig has been my bread and butter for so long it's not even funny. Even now I fnd it hard to not compaire it with any dual core system, It's been fast, reliable and pretty stable. (as stable as Nforce 3 can ever be on 2 cores!!! It does have a habit of randomly crashing due to the memory allocation problems with Nforce 3 and dual core!)..
O.k so why am i here... Well it's new rig time. I'm going to custom build it as always, I'll be overclocking once i have the rig stable on core speeds, and I'll be using it for my work.
Budget is always a problem for me, I work to a system of buy now upgrade later. And with that in mind i will explain and evaluate some of the component choices i have made. Feel free to throw in any comments, I've been out of the loop so long i have a feeling there's going to be a little bit of a ribbing over my current system But all fair and i don't hold grudges so blast away with the Gfwars!
Firstly I've been ati/amd for as long as i can remember, So this rig is going to be intel.
I'm looking at the I5 2500K It's well priced, Fits the bill perfectly for the minute and i have a feeling 1155 will be getting a lot of love over the next few years. The plan here is to get the I5 run it for a year or so then get a better CPU if 1155 takes off in a big way. If it doesn't then i'll do what i did with 939, and burn it into the ground.
Motherboard wise it'll be a P67 budget board. MSI have a nice one that looks promising. the P67A-G45 B3.

It's a budget board, But i have been burned by Nforce 3 The plan here is to take whats cheap and overclockable, And if i find there are better boards out there then i'll get one and Get a budget processor for this board, or even better I'll do a second system, with the I5 and MSI, and then get the newer faster gear as my main. Any glaring issues with this board please adress. I'm new to 1155 and if this board has problems tell me.. please
Ram will be Ripjaw 4Gb 1600 on 2 dimms, Again keeping it cheap the ram is 999-24 so while it's not the most blistering ram out there it will do. I'm hearing the sweet spot on the I5 is about 1800Mhz so this should be ideal.
Graphics have already been bought, I got a hd6950, sapphire 2gb, it's already had the shaders unlocked, and it's overclocked to 900Mhz 1350ram. I can get more out of it but it's not even in a rig i'm using atm so i'll have time to test it later.
And finally the case. I'm at a loss here. It's either going to be a HAF 932, or the sniper. The haf has the better airflow, But the sniper has dust filters! I think the sniper is the winner..
The real help i need more than anything is the cooler for the CPU. I should have good airflow, I've read a lot and looked at a lot, the frio seems O.k but it's a make i've had problems with in the past. The noctua D14 also looks good But for the money i can get a watercooled system... This is realy burning my brain. I'm going to use the stock cooler for 3 weeks anyway once i get the rig so i can see what i'm going to be facing heat wise on a marginal overclock But help here is very very apriciated.
Thank you for reading this! thank you even more if you reply
all other rig components will be standard. There's no need to go into deatails about branding on a 800W power supply because i Buy by ampage not voltage anyway.
