Hey people, It's new rig time for me. I used to be a member of Geforce zone later ausfx, But the site appears to have long gone! LOL shows how long it's been since i did anything involving a new system for myself.

To get you in the mood i'll let you laugh at what i've been running for the past 5 years!

939 X2 3800, clocked at 2.9Ghz.
2Gb DDR1 corsair.
X1950 pro 512 (agp!!!!!!)
N-force 3 ultra agp board.

This rig has been my bread and butter for so long it's not even funny. Even now I fnd it hard to not compaire it with any dual core system, It's been fast, reliable and pretty stable. (as stable as Nforce 3 can ever be on 2 cores!!! It does have a habit of randomly crashing due to the memory allocation problems with Nforce 3 and dual core!)..

O.k so why am i here... Well it's new rig time. I'm going to custom build it as always, I'll be overclocking once i have the rig stable on core speeds, and I'll be using it for my work.

Budget is always a problem for me, I work to a system of buy now upgrade later. And with that in mind i will explain and evaluate some of the component choices i have made. Feel free to throw in any comments, I've been out of the loop so long i have a feeling there's going to be a little bit of a ribbing over my current system :D But all fair and i don't hold grudges so blast away with the Gfwars!

Firstly I've been ati/amd for as long as i can remember, So this rig is going to be intel.

I'm looking at the I5 2500K It's well priced, Fits the bill perfectly for the minute and i have a feeling 1155 will be getting a lot of love over the next few years. The plan here is to get the I5 run it for a year or so then get a better CPU if 1155 takes off in a big way. If it doesn't then i'll do what i did with 939, and burn it into the ground.

Motherboard wise it'll be a P67 budget board. MSI have a nice one that looks promising. the P67A-G45 B3.
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/...55p67chipsetmotherboards/msi/p67a-g45-b3.html
It's a budget board, But i have been burned by Nforce 3 :D The plan here is to take whats cheap and overclockable, And if i find there are better boards out there then i'll get one and Get a budget processor for this board, or even better I'll do a second system, with the I5 and MSI, and then get the newer faster gear as my main. Any glaring issues with this board please adress. I'm new to 1155 and if this board has problems tell me.. please :D

Ram will be Ripjaw 4Gb 1600 on 2 dimms, Again keeping it cheap the ram is 999-24 so while it's not the most blistering ram out there it will do. I'm hearing the sweet spot on the I5 is about 1800Mhz so this should be ideal.

Graphics have already been bought, I got a hd6950, sapphire 2gb, it's already had the shaders unlocked, and it's overclocked to 900Mhz 1350ram. I can get more out of it but it's not even in a rig i'm using atm so i'll have time to test it later.

And finally the case. I'm at a loss here. It's either going to be a HAF 932, or the sniper. The haf has the better airflow, But the sniper has dust filters! I think the sniper is the winner..

The real help i need more than anything is the cooler for the CPU. I should have good airflow, I've read a lot and looked at a lot, the frio seems O.k but it's a make i've had problems with in the past. The noctua D14 also looks good But for the money i can get a watercooled system... This is realy burning my brain. I'm going to use the stock cooler for 3 weeks anyway once i get the rig so i can see what i'm going to be facing heat wise on a marginal overclock But help here is very very apriciated.

Thank you for reading this! thank you even more if you reply :D

all other rig components will be standard. There's no need to go into deatails about branding on a 800W power supply because i Buy by ampage not voltage anyway. :D

Welcome back!

TL;DR:
i5 2500K,
Asus P67A-G45 B3
Ripjaws 2x2Gb 1600
Sapphire 6950 2gb
Case: either HAF 932 or Sniper
Cooler? D14?

Ok, back to my advice:
Get a 212+ for cooler, unless you are looking for some serious overclocking, in which case you might want to look for better alternatives. CNPS 10X comes to mind, along with the standard suspects like Venomous X and so on. Check Hardware Canucks and Frostytech. Thermaltake Polaris seems to be good too, if you can find them.

Case? I have an infatuation to the CM 690II advanced, so don't ask me for advice. And I dont think you will need the 2gb graphics card, 1gb is enough, but I can be wrong.

I already have the 2GB 6950, I got a great deal on it from overclockers, was just over £200 so the price was almost identical to the 1GB variants. More is better with the Gfx as it'll allow me to go for 3 screen if i choose in the future.

I actually looked at the 212+ there very reasonably priced and that kind of threw me a little, I would never expect a cheap cooler to have the same wattage disapation as a more expensive heavier one, i'll look into them again over at frostytech, their a great site.

If you are looking for a cheap water cooling start up kit something like this might be right up your alley.....http://www.frozencpu.com/products/11743/ex-wat-159/XSPC_Rasa_750_RS240_Universal_CPU_Water_Cooling_Kit_-HOT.html
Comes with everything you would need minus the fluid of your choice. While it is a little more than the high end air coolers you would be promised to get better temps. I mention this only because you also mentioned a chance of a long life for this rig. And we all know the lower the temps the longer life you will have with the rig. Plus if you want to add lets say your video card later.... you would have a good base too upgrade from.

I only mention the adding the water cooling for the HD6950 2gb is because they run hotter. Take it from a Ex HD6950 owner I know :) Great cards !!!! Jut run hot thats all.

Otherwise if you insist on sticking with a cheaper air solution I would agree with others who say the Hyper 212+ is your best option for the money.

I wonder if those pumps have the power to pump mineral oil. Might be slightly safer than water, and it wouldn't get manky in the pipework. Has anyone tried this on here?

So close to Bulldozer launch i would just wait a little bit more time & see how Bulldozer performs & the price tag...

Anyhow you should like your new Intel SB built... until bulldozer smash the hell out of it :D
Kidding i seriously doubt bulldozer will keep up with Intel SB :ohwell:

as harsh as it sounds i don't care for amd with this build, I've had AMD cpu's since the slot a athlon 700. Amd for the past 5 years have been slipping, There just throwing more cores in to try and compete. In all fairness sandy bridge should have been a 5Ghz release. If Amd could compete it would have been. SB just has heat problems at that speed but they would have been counterd if the competition was there..

Bulldozer will be another phenom i feel, too little too late.

This is and will stay an intel build.

Man! i was just kidding about AMD bulldozer smashing Intel...
All i was saying is why not wait a little bit since Bulldozer should be out in june/july time just in case bulldozer is what we want it to be?
If not then you'll have more money save to put on Intel system which they may go cheaper after bulldozer launch?

What is 2 or 3 more months after waiting so long?

Anyhow just a thought...

Grab a venomous-x, archon, megahalems, noctua, etc.
Slap an 1850rpm Scythe Gentle Typhoon (available in UK) on it and you will be good to go...

Of note ASROCK P67 boards are similarly priced and quality has improved to ASUS levels.
I just picked up an Asrock P67 Pro3 (equivalent to the Asus P8P67 Pro but significantly cheaper).

The beauty of the Asrock boards is that it has mounting holes for older 775 heatsinks but it doesn't matter in your case...

Hmm similar priced yes.

Before we continue i need to amend the original post i made!! the mainboard is an MSI not an Asus, the model number is correct tho!

If that FDD header was an IDE header then the asrock would be a no brainer for me. I could save a small amount on a new DVD drive and reuse an older IDE hard drive. However it is a FDD header. Making the MSI a sligtly better deal since it has dual PciE slots.

here's the linkage for the mainboard.

IDE hdd's make me cringe. I personally wont buy anything legacy. I have a fit now that i still see boards with freaking PS/2 ports and IDE ports. Its 2011, get rid of that crap! (directed at motherboard manufacturers)

I honestly think Bulldozer is going to do quite well and its going to finally topple over Intel after the last 5 years. However, in the event that it doesnt, socket 2011 is due out in the next coming months (juneish i believe) so i might be better to wait for that. I believe its socket x78

I'd love to wait, But it's upgrade time :D

Bulldozer/x78 are far off, 2 months a release and then the filter into the market, First gen troubles, and the slow price decrease to normalisation. Your dealing with at least 6 months before those chips are deemed affordable.

X78 is a nice idea, But intel arn't going to be dropping 1155 as fast as you might think it'll just become the Budget line, In the same way you can still get X58 and 1156 chips now. I don't see the need to wait.

X78 is probably more to do with intel having a direct response to the zambezi core AMD and the HT capabilities it's going to have. And i'm looking at I5 anyway so HT is mute.

As for IDE, LMAO, it's not much slower than Sata... Infact i have a Sata3 machine next to me that scores 5.9 on aeromark, and my IDE in this system score 5.8! I've had legacy on MB's since 97. Yes it's old but it's also reliable. Don't rule something out as dead is it works till you have something better to replace it with. PciE is a prime example of this, AGP was faster then as fast on 1x 4x and 8x variants. But PciE is better than AGP on the 16X variant. However how many boards appeared in the 3 year PciE crossover that were not to 16X standards. Legacy is like an old friend i'll sorely miss.

Maybe not, but when Intel releases their 1356 socket it will replace 1155 and people with $500 budgets will be buying 1155. You can still get X58 because there isnt a successor to it yet but there is for 1156 and thats Sandy Bridge.

X78 is probably more to do with intel having a direct response to the zambezi core AMD and the HT capabilities it's going to have. And i'm looking at I5 anyway so HT is mute.
Well of course it is. Thats sorta the point of competition is it not?

As for IDE, LMAO, it's not much slower than Sata... Infact i have a Sata3 machine next to me that scores 5.9 on aeromark, and my IDE in this system score 5.8!
Ive never heard of aeromark and a google search only yields airline stuff? Maybe im missing something?

I've had legacy on MB's since 97.
Well of course you have had legacy on your motherboards since 97 if you only upgrade once every 5 or so years.

Yes it's old but it's also reliable.
I never said it wasnt reliable. I was merely saying that if there is newer technology out that replaces its previous version then it is considered legacy.

Don't rule something out as dead is it works till you have something better to replace it with.
I never said it was dead. If it were dead, then they wouldnt be on motherboards. But honestly if youre going to build (or anyone) a complete over haul of a system, why not get rid of everything legacy? Youre going to be spending big money on the new computer anyway so why not? And there is something better to replace it with, its called current gen.

PciE is a prime example of this, AGP was faster then as fast on 1x 4x and 8x variants. But PciE is better than AGP on the 16X variant.
Probably is. I dont know the details of it and i honestly dont care. But who uses a PCIe video card in 1x and 4x mode? Sure you use 8x when using dual card setups because the second lane shares with the first.

However how many boards appeared in the 3 year PciE crossover that were not to 16X standards.
Doesnt matter. Because the fact of the matter is the sole reason for PCIe was because you couldn't get the speeds or the power needed through AGP thus the video cards that made the new standard to become available.

I did this build for someone acouple days ago. Drop from it what you dont need(mouse/KB) and maybe change out the SSD for a larger one.

Ive never heard of aeromark and a google search only yields airline stuff? Maybe im missing something?

Probably is. I dont know the details of it and i honestly dont care. But who uses a PCIe video card in 1x and 4x mode? Sure you use 8x when using dual card setups because the second lane shares with the first.

Ignore 1356, its still quite a distance away. And while the 1156 is considered "old tech", it still pack plenty of punch. 1155 is just more recommended because its "newer tech", and hence easier to find replacements down the line.

Aeromark is probably Windows Experience judging by the score. Useless at any rate.

Surprisingly, running a graphics card in x4 mode is not as bad as we make it sound. Lower end graphics card will not take much of a hit, but GTX580 will suffer about 20% hit in capabilities. And you can get a NF200 chip soldered in the mobo to get you to 40x lanes, so no worries there.

Oh no doubt 1156 is still quite good Im not saying its not. Just that theres something newer.

Thats what I figured.

Which would make such a beast card worthless.

You don't need to always get the newest tech out there. Plenty of good enough ones. The GTX580 is still a very capable card even with 20% nerf.

O.k the order has been placed.

2500K I5
Msi P67a Gd45 R3
212+ HSF
4 GB corsair vengence 1600 999-24 (black)
1TB HD
DVD RW sata
CM 690 II pure black.

I did a little hunting on the net. The ram was changed because the ripjaws were red (lol) looking at the case mod thread i thought i can have a go at that! so i'm going to get 2 black dimms then 2 blue dimms when i upgrade to match the dimm slots.

212+ over the frio simply to keep cost down ATM, I think i'm going to get a water cooler, so that'll be done sometime over summer, It'll be a proper loop as well not a cheap premade one. I still need to do some research here for my own peace of mind.

CM 690 after watching several unboxings, and reading loads of reviews of HAF/sniper chassis then looking at this little case i noticed something that it has that none of the others have. Dust screens!!! I'm a smoker, dust screens are good! It's also not a lot smaller than the others, i just loose the top mounted psu and 2 drive bays. I'm still looking to raid the system but that will be done on a network box i think. The case had the space, But i'll need a raid controller or sata controller in addition to whats already there if i'm running a 5 drive raid + windows drive + DVD writers. I'll also need to work some magic on the drives to make it work. It'll be a mish mash. Because only 4 of the ports are sata 2 and 2 are sata 3. Meaning i'm going to have to either nerf the sata 3's or go with a 4 drive raid. More research is needed, I need another rebuildable drive as mine is getting full of client work that is undeteletable. Either way the 690 gives me enough space and more longevety between cleans.

Edit:

Right it's all here and built, The motherboard seems to have an issue with dimm slots 1&2 tho, going to send it back in the morning. Other than that i just ran a fast stock vantage mark on it and got 19K out of the box. Without dual memory, and with no tweaks. Oddly the Gui bios interface doesn't like my mouse! It one goes up and down not left and right as well! the keys still work tho.

The 212+ and the corsair vengenge fit together, But i had to invert the 212+'s fan and mount it on the back of the heatsink still blowing to the rear of the case. The heatsinks on the vengence are just a little loo long and they touch.

Once i get this mobo sorted i think this rigs going to be a lot of fun :D TY for all the help.
Mod question: should i continue this thread with the build, Or would you rather me move it to the projects part of the form and start a clean thread.

Sorry to double post not sure what the forum rules are on bumps... Slap me if need be.

Update on the build.

The problems i was having with the dimm slots have been fixed. I did a little troubleshooting when i was stripping the system back down and found on of the connector pins for the cpu was out of allignment. i fixed it with a pin and popped the cpu and HSF back on... ALL the slots are working now.

Been running a few benchmarks and doing some slight overclocking. I'm up to 4.5Ghz on turbo with all 4 cores and no voltage tweaks. I'm going to let it bed in for a few days at that speed before i take it any further. Everything voltage wise is stock, ram running at 1600Mhz on spd, CPU-z tells me everything is as it should be.

I'll screenshot in a bit and let you see for yourself. Temps are also fine. Hot as hell GFX card, But i can add a fan into that area and get some of the heat away from the card a little quicker.

The 212+ needed a slight modification to fit in witht he vengence ram. I simply put the fan on the other side, to do this and keep the airflow all facing backwards i had to swap the rubber stopper from one side of the fan to the other. There's plenty of space over the board coolers to do this.

All in all i'm a very very happy chappy ATM.

Edit a screenshot.

Wow Cata, Og at 6pm Uk time on overpopulated server. Settings on ultra.

24hr is usually a good time to bump if you have new stuff :toast:

What graphics card are you using? Is it hot as in hot by your standards, or hot by that card's standard?

Oh, and update your system specs :)

System specs updated.

HD6950 2GB with the shader mod. hitting 70 at full load. Just seems hot to me, i'm going to add a fan on the case door inline with it to see if that makes things a little more passive.

70 is not that bad for 6970 actually. They can take 90+C iirc.
