My mother wants an ebook reader or table like device for Christmas. Her thing is, besides being able to read ebooks, to be able to write her own documents in Word or Notepad and then read them on the device.

What are you suggestions?

Kindle Fire HD looks pretty sweet. I bought my wife a regular kindle fire and I have it rooted with Jellybean rom currently.

I recommend Nexus 7. Google seems to be the only company that does not inflate their prices. You can get the Nexus 4 phone for $299, no contract. Compare that to pretty much any phone with similar specs, and it will stand alone.

Depends on your budget. The fire and nexus are probably the two best for that price range. If you want cheaper then things get complicated. I have heard good things about the koby kyros.
