I got a new video card 12 hours ago. XFX HD5770 1GB.

I uninstalled the old graphics drivers, shutdown, removed old video cards, installed new card, installed new drivers 9.12, and went about playing and testing with the new hardware.

I was playing a video game for about an hour and all of a sudden the PC just turns off. Cold hard shutdown. Complete power loss. I tried to turn the computer back on and the only thing that happens is the LEDs in the front flick on for 1/4 sec and I hear a small pop or tink kinda sound from the PSU and thats it. Nothing else happens. There is no boot up or any other power to the rest of the system. If I try continue to boot up, it does nothing at all. There isnt even the tink or LED thing. I have to completely remove all power from the system with the rear power switch then give it power again to only get the same result.

Is the PSU dead? I still get the green LED on the mobo signifying its still getting power...

AMD Phenon 9850 BE
XFX HD5770
2GB PC6400 (2x1GB)
Antec 650 earthwatts PSU
and a xtreme gamer sound card...

so Im pretty sure I wasnt stressing the limits of the PSU. Any ideas?

Sounds like a PSU to me. I have had many go out, some in smoke/flames.

I'd try another PSU if ya have a spare just to test or a friend that does.

This does sound like classic PSU failure. I had the same thing when my HEC Cougar 750W went splat. Do you have another PSU around to check whether the system works ?

No, I don't have another PSU nor a friend with 24/8 rails. I'll just go buy one. Thanks guys. I'll post back if the PSU fixed the problem.

Didn't fix it. The new PSU I bought was a BFG 450W with all the plugs I needed but it wont even turn on. Im pretty sure 450W is enough power for an 125W CPU, video card and accessories. Anyone else think it might not be enough power? I thought it would at least turn on even if it wasnt enough power.

It could be the new PSU , but i doubt it , how many amps on the 12v rail?

It could also be your Motherboard...?

Try booting with only the ram , video card & keyboard in & unplug everything else

First and foremost check the power connection i mean the power cable and the wall socket ... if everything is in order ... then most probably your MOBO is dead ...

Then it could really be your motherboard?
Can you try all you parts in another computer or at less the video card?

I swapped out my new video card with one of my old HD3870s and i still get the same thing. I'm pretty sure my Mobo is gone. At least thats what Ive gathered thus far...

Just figured out what killed the motherboard. I had my old cards pci-express slots set to specific settings telling which slots and what power rating to give them. I'm pretty sure that because I forgot about this and dumped my two old HD3870s, leaving the settings in place, it might of fryed something somehow with using only one HD5770.

Anyone care to comment on my idea of what killed it?

Did you clear CMOS?

Oh yea. I tried that. Nothing changed. It doesn't matter now. I've replaced so many things now that I've got a 75% new PC. Now I just need a new HD monitor, Bluray player, and a new PC case.

By the way, I was adding that response as a kind of helpful note for if someone has a similar problem in the future and they search the forums. Although, I'm not 100% sure if that was what killed it. Hell, it might of just been a tin whisker...

Oh, shi-. I didn't even think of that. Its ok though. The video card is only like a week old, and I've got receipts, boxes, and all the other crap it came with.
