New video card doesn't like CPU OC

I am trying to swap in a Sapphire X1950XTX video card, I built the system last week and it has been fine till now.

Problem about 50% of the time there is no video and a BIOS beep code on boot with one long and two short = Video Adapter error. Happens on both warm and cold boots. If you get video on boot the system is stable and plays games fine or at least loops of 3dmark and a little half life EP1.

What I know:
-System is overclocked to 350FSB but is completely happy with prime95, burn in test and some game play with either video card at this speed.

-If you clock back to 266FSB the system detects the X1950XTX every time fine.

-At 266 or 350FSB the 7800GT is detected at POST every time.

-When the video is not detected a soft power cycle is all that is needed to correct it. Soft being click power button once and wait for it to turn itself off, not holding the button to kill it.

What I have done so far:
-Locked the PCIE to 100 in the BIOS, was set to AUTO.
-Tried +.1v on the PCIE
-Changed the init display first to PEG, has option for PEG2 and PCI, was set to PCI.

None of the above changed the situation. Motherboard has the latest F9 BIOS and I don't know about the video card BIOS. Unless you all can think of an option that I am missing somewhere?

Oh is there anywhere to download updated BIOS's for the X1950XTX? It looks like there are a lot here but none for that card.

As a side note I am trying to run the ATI 7.4 drivers and they are bombing out in XP Pro 32 bit pretty hard with MOM.exe and CLI.exe errors. Using the DD CCC WDM driver. Unable to load the control center at all.

I am only thinking in your situation that either the psu isnt strong enough OR your pci-e bus is being clocked too high.

@ATI 7.4's: Do you have .NET Framework 2.0 installed?

I assume that you have uninstalled the N/V drivers before you installed the ATI.

Dr Death: I have the latest F9 BIOS for the motherboard, there is nothing later.

JrRacinFan:

Thanks about the .NET framework, I forgot about that. Has to be my problem.

My PSU is a Seasonic S12-550, I sincerely hope its not that.

I have the PCIE bus locked to 100 in the BIOS, is there something else I should be doing there as well?

Ima check my PCI-e bus speed when I gtet home and see what it defaults at. I wanna think it is supposed to be 100Mhz but not sure it may be 66mhz.

Let me check when I get home (at work right now).

Ah, on a hunch I upped the volts to the PCIE to +.15 and the FSB to +.1. I can't get it to post with no video anymore so I guess it's fixed. I think it was the FSB that did the trick.

I overvolt all mine! I'm on AMD, but I overvolted my ram, my Hypertransport, chipset, PCIe and CPU! lol

I was going to recommend upping the PCIe voltage and well, you did and it works, so NM!

ouch, poor mobo(&psu), is it really necessary to overvolt all of them? (i myself only up the voltage on my ram, though i can see a single core needing a bit more volts)

overvolting such small things wont affect his PSU much at all, if anything. That said, its better to not overvolt it if you dont need to, because of heat. save 5W of power, 5W less heat in the case... more stable. and nicer to the environment!

I'm as stable as a Giant Redwood :) How many of those do I really need over volted? They're only .1v on each, it's too little to generate 5w of heat. My CPU is ducted from the back of the case, so it gets cool air, and the PSU is right above it, sucking out any warm air. I Idle @ 25c and load @ 38c with the stock solid alu HSF and it's pink thermal pad lol (not the nice dual core copper heatpipe)

So back to, do I need it? My ram is timed very right, and 100mhz over spec, so the .2v extra probably helps a little. It's Corsair, lifetime warranty. My CPU is 700mhz over spec, and I know I can get away with 1.5v, but I just haven't changed it. My HTT bus is 168mhz over spec, so I'm sure the .1v helps it. My BUS(Chipset) is @ 270mhz, I've had it as high as 280, so I'm sure the .1v helps as well. The only one I'm sure doesn't do much (but might!) is the PCIe, but again it's only .1v and I'm not too worried.

By the time the overvolting and overclocking take their toll, I'll be upgrading my computer, so it really won't matter. Unless I just goto a dual-core 939, I'd have to upgrade my mobo, ram and CPU.

The only thing I'm amazed at is my PSU. It's like 3+ years old, Antec TruPower 430w. Has high amps, which I intentionally got because my old SMP AthlonMP motherboard required over 32amp on one of the rails. And my old one, while it would've worked, didn't have the +4 plug needed :p So my surprise isn't the age, it's the fact that it powers my current rig, 6hdd's, 1 CDRom, 1 Floppy, 2 fans, my 1950 Pro w/ its HIS HSF, 5 USB items and an IDE JBoD card lol And the air coming out the back? Probably 50ºF.

I spoke too soon anyway, sorry. That little overvolt didn't change anything but it looked good for an hours worth of restarts.

I removed the overclock completely now and I am testing again more throughly than that first time. So far so good but I don't want to speak to soon again.

Although it is much more reliable at stock speeds it sometimes starts with no video and POST fail beeps. I got two blue screens today too going into or coming out of games as well. Crap, I really wanted to like this card, it's pretty quick.

i wouldnt say undoubtably, but its very likely. I didnt realise he had such an old PSU, they had quite bad reputations on A64 systems.

In the future maxburn, specify the PSU as well as the rest of the hardware from the start.

nah if the card was overheating, it wouldnt work on a reboot, like he says it does - its a cold boot issue, which is often caused by lack of power.

Old power supply? This is a one month old Seasonic S12-550 which is SLI certified. I was running two 7800GT's in SLI with this power supply under a AMD 3700+ system before I moved to this system. This is also listed on ATI's page for Crossfire, which I am not using. This is a rather simple system with two HD's and one optical drive and the video card is the only add in card. Are you really saying that I need something bigger? Sorry about not listing everything the first time, this is it:

Everything in the computer:
GIGABYTE GA-965P-DQ6 v3.3
C2D E6600
Corsair TWIN2X2048-8500C5
WD740GD Raptor
Some SATA 160gig Seagate drive
DVDRW drive.
Three 120mm case fans
x1950xtx video card

I can almost see the overheat issue as the last time it crashed it was exiting a game and then on reset I had no video until I let it sit for a while. Lets not forget that this was an open box item either.

Thankfully Newegg has agreed to waive the restocking fee on this RMA. My only problem is where do I get another one, they are out of stock completely.

maybe i was reading something else, i swear i saw something about an antec PSU in here somewhere...

Oh and running an AMD w/ SLI on an earlier system doesnt mean much, as the power would have shifted around - ATI cards use a lot more off the 5V rail, intel CPU's use a lot more power.. etc. So its quite possible the new CPU is choking your 12V rail.

Does that PSU have multiple rails on the 12V?

I thought the Core 2 Duo's were rather more efficient and blow away the P4 Prescot levels of power consumption? I was thinking this C2D E6600 was on par with the AMD 3700+, maybe a little more but not that bad.

Yes this PSU has four 12V rails: http://www.seasonicusa.com/s12plus.htm
