One of my GTX470s has a problem with one of the fans and the noise is driving me crazy. I can fix it by disabling the fan and adding another fan ziptied to the shroud, but that will eat up a slot I don't want to lose (there's a lot of crap in this case).

I am a bit out of the loop as far as GPUs go nowdays, so I could use a bit of help to shorten my googling period.

The general requirements are as follows:
1) About the same GPU performance as two GTX470s (or better - Note I don't actually run SLI typically, read #2, so assume perfect scaling).
2) Enough VRAM to run three 1920x1080 monitors with an EVE Online client on each (and the ability to drive three monitors on its outputs). I am not sure how many people here play EVE, but in general my GTX470 setup can manage three monitors (with one card running one maxed out client, and the other running the other two with AA dialed down). Memory usage is pretty high on the cards, so 2GB is probably the bare minimum for the new card. If the new card will have about the same processing power as a pair of my current cards, then memory is really the bottleneck, not the GPU power itself.
3) A single card.
4) Not the GTX690 (I can afford just about any card, but the price for this thing here is rather nuts and it is probably overkill).

What are your ideas, folks ?

Thanks for any and all input!

If you are concerned about VRAM then there's the 7970 from AMD with 3GB and the slightly faster GTX680 which you must find custom models with 4GB. Both cards are faster than a 470 SLi setup.

I agree, currently 7970. Now if you were looking to cut power consumption, 7800s. Right now the only thing worthwhile is the 7900s coming from your current ones.

I think GTX 680 2GB provides similar performance to GTX 470 SLI (because GTX 680 provides similar performance to HD 6870 CrossFire). So find the cheapest reference design GTX 680 card out there.

Wow. helpful..... not

Sorry for being so fast at the post. This is a reference 680 GTX which powers 3 Acer S242HL 24" monitors in Surround. I play Rise of Flight on it and the fps and smoothness are stunning.

If you want a card right now I would say buy the 7970 and don't leave a doubt in your mind its a good card, or you can wait for the GTX670 because its looking very promising.

Alright. I took a glance at the GTX670 and decided to wait a bit to see what it comes down to. The Tweaktown early review was interesting enough to make me wait after I almost got a HD7970 today. Now I just need a good w1zz review to be sure :)

I'd still prefer the 3GB of VRAM on the HD7970, but maybe a 4GB version of the GTX670 will hit retail around here within a few days of the near release.

A few more days won't kill me.

Thanks everyone.

You made the right decision, with the launch so close, even if you end up getting a 7970, there is a chance that you may get a better deal on it than if you buy a few days before another blockbuster card hits that space.

Hell yeah....I need to see them crop up here for sale, and hopefully they'll have a 4GB model in there. That thing is a total beast.

Update:
I actually ended up getting a Sapphire HD7950 3GB, instead.

Before the54void comes over here to punch me in the face, I'll explain why :)

Pricing and availability over here:
GTX680 - 731 USD (barely in stock).
HD7970 - 626 USD (in stock everywhere).
Asus GTX670 DCII TOP - 630 USD (not in stock anywhere near me).
Gigabyte GTX670 OC (The one with the GTX680 PCB) - 574 USD (not in stock anywhere near me).
GTX670 reference (by Gainward) - 570 USD (in stock near where my parents live, which isn't all that close to me, either).
Sapphire HD7950 3GB - 430 USD (in stock everywhere).

More VRAM? Check. Much lower pricing? Check. Available and in stock 5min away from where I work? Check. Weaker? Yeah, but it should do what I need it to do just fine.

Edit: Sorry, started a advance post while your comment came through, HD7950 is a good choice.

In my opinion you could choose either the GTX680 or the HD7970.

Id pick the HD7970 due to the fact it has 3GB of VRAM compared to the normal 2GB of the GTX680. Waiting for the GTX680 4GB models will waste time and be a lot more costly

Looking through reviews though, the GTX670 performs very well considering its price point, only a fraction behind the HD7970 in some games (unsure about EVE though), and also in saying that it does lack once more in the VRAM side of things, boasting only 2GB.

Hope this is a little helpful atleast :p Goodluck!
