Next generation GPU jump how big really it will be on this time?

The only case in which I would consider getting a raytracing GPU is if a Jedi Knight game making heavy use of it was announced.

With RT out of the picture we did get a hint about what to expect.
Jensen said that the 2070 should be slightly faster than a titan xp, so at 1080 ti pre-oc ballpark. That makes a lot of sense
Thats how 1070 and 980 Ti were, sorta kinda

2304 cores at 1.7 Ghz slightly faster than 3840 cores at similar clocks, basically 50% more IPC ? I am so doubtful of that. And how will the 2080 ti do ? Do you really think it will be twice as fast as a Titan Xp ?

Cores schmores. New architecture means new rules. By that logic even the GTX 1080 should annihilate the RTX 2070.
I do believe we need to expect at least a 50-60% performance increase over previous flagship, just like we did in previous generations

That didn't always happen, so it's wishful thinking at best. Nvidia did their best to avoid talking about how these new cards stack up against the previous generation in terms of actual shading power. That's telling, remember the "1080 is as fast a 980 SLI" thing they said when they introduced Pascal ? Nothing of the sort this time around, you'd think they would manage to put together one slide addressing that straight forward.

Product pages are lackluster too in terms of performance metrics. Virtually nothing at all, for an entire product stack that's supposed to come out next month ? Yeah, I am doubtful indeed.

And to that I say: keep dreaming.

Shader count is low on a node that is close to previous gen and its not like the shaders are radically different, more like optimized and reshuffled. On top of that we havent seen a single slide showing us performance of non RT content.

But we'll see, wont we..

Ray tracing is going to play huge role in slow paced games like Deus Ex, where you're moving slowly and have plenty of time observing details like looking at glasses and bottles on table reflecting things in realistic way, mirrors on walls that you could use to your advantage from visual perspective, reflections in air ducts where you usually spend a lot of time, observing your own reflection in a visor of a security guard that you're talking to which is also what happens often in this game etc. And also worlds are usually very detailed because of this. Where in games like Battlefield where shit flies around you, it's much less relevant or meaningful. Main problem is that all this has to be coded specifically which means old games will never see it and new ones depend on it and will only come in years to follow. Certainly the right way for near photorealism, but it'll take time for sure.

Ppl just expect that every jump will be 50% now. Like corporate suit monkeys who expect ridiculous sales growths from year to year into infinity. Things don't work like that and frankly, Maxwell and Pascal were sort of lucky moments in NVIDIA's history where all things sort of perfectly fit together. I'm frankly expecting around 25% boost in non ray traced stuff. Given how fast 1080Ti is, that's still perfectly reasonable.

Why is nobody talking about NVLink?

Because multi-GPU configurations are quite irrelevant these days ? Well, they've always been but they've fallen into obscurity even more in the last few years.

The fact that we were being told, no, demanded to look at particular objects or effects on small parts of the scene tell me that...

1.) RTX is too expensive with this architecture, and can only be done on small areas of the screen at a time, without massive performance penalties, especially on anything non Ti branded.

2.) Some of the effects are so minor that if they were not specifically pointed out to you, you would not have noticed them, and could be achieved by other, more traditional means.

3.) The fact that they never showcased the performance of non RTX games means not to expect earth shattering increases in performance compared to last gen cards.

Hi,

Here is a small graph that I quickly made from data from the TPU database :

If we ignore RTX, and look at the perf only, we can see that there is only the 2080 Ti that is more powerful than the 1080 Ti, while when Pascal came out, the 1070 was more powerful than the 980 Ti.

Based on what, synthetics scores?

Just be patient and see what really happens in a complete and proper review.

That is the based on each cards TFLOPS, but naturally that doesn't take into account improvements to the architecture.

Vega 64 is apparently 12.5 TFLOPS but battles the 8.9 TFLOP GTX 1080 for example.

Compute cards ? There is no differentiation between the two, same ALUs are used for compute and shading. Higher TFLOPS indicate higher compute and gaming performance, that was always the case.

That only flies within the same or very similar architectures though. In reality this whole tflops metric is worthless as a perf indicator

It's not worthless at all, sure it doesn't tell you precisely what performance you are going to get but it's a good enough indicator for improved performance. Anyway, my point was that there is no clear distinction between compute and gaming cards, you can argue something is more optimized for one or the other but at the end of the day it's meant to do both.

Interesting point you just jarred loose from my noggin.

Didn't intel try and sell larabee on it's potentially awe inspiring ray tracing capacity too as It's Usp ,i mean Dx12Rx wasn't just shot out of Ms's ass ,they and their Hardware partner's will have all worked towards that standard, Something Nvidias bet big on clearly ,but intel and Amd(thinking of Rpm and its application to G'rays??) Will have been at that table too, chips take 3-5 years after all, maybe intel will have something interesting in 2020?.

Not many.. but the ones that exist I have no complaint about. I'm just a gamer. To be honest, I don't care what it looks like as a developer. I'm not a developer.

People say Vulkan is better for my AMD card, but I seem to be OK with both (Vulkan Doom and DX12 Forza both run at 4K 60fps.. which is fine by me. I wish everything ran this well. I have older DX9 and DX11 games that are shittier than this).
