the question kind of answers its self in the fact that quad cores are going to be able to process may more tasks compared to dual core and as we see programs that are being written to utilise the extra cores, 4 > 2. Depends on what you can afford.

Definitely go for a quad-core, I'd go for the lowest clocked one as this would likely offer you the most headroom for OC'ing. Plus it'll be cheaper compared on the higher clocked models.

I'd make sure you get one with a decent FSB and amount of cache, don't skimp on those, just the clock speed.

i think the q9450 is well worth its money, with some nice OCing headroom too

STOP

You've already got a great rig. You are talking about a small % gain here. Im not sure its wise to do an upgrade and only get 10-30% average performance improvement (real world applications).

I would wait until the April price cuts, and THEN go octo-core. You need a server board and put in one Xeon quad core. You'll get a great improvement. But when you decide to go faster, just stick ANOTHER quad xeon in there. That way you've got a nice upgrade path. NOBODY in your neighbourhood with have a machine that can CRUNCH like an octo-Xeon.

There's a new ASUS board that fits in a regular ATX case. Search forums for ASUS and DanBanjoman.

its nice to dream.. but my answer to this one is simple "if u dont know exactly why u need quad u dont need it"

some things will benefit from quad.. most things wont.. so my current choice is faster cooler dual core.. but i dont run software that does benefit from quad.. if u do.. go quad..

If you are only gaming Dual core will be fine, :) but as TRT said "if your an overclocker your never happy"... you'll grab your self one of those quad cores :D

thats not always true, if the multi is to low you have issues also.

id look for one with a decent multiplier if you intend to OC also

I'm @ about the same point as you m8! I don't know where to go dual or quad. Some tell me dual, because I'm gaming (most CPU intensive thing I will do). Others say go quad, because they are a little more. I was thinking of the Xeon 3210 (I heard it can be OCed to ~3.7), but IDK.

Yep, some of you guys are right......with your current CPU you will run almost any aplication perfectly....even today games, if you upgrade your CPU you will not see almost any performance boost (real aplications, you sure will see a bunch of 3DMark points). If you wanna expend the bucks anyway then upgrade your VGA or go SLI, other than that wait for the price-cuts in the incoming months or definitely make a full use of your CPU until newer, powerful models invade the market.
