I honestly thought I was on another site when I saw this (one that starts with w). When I realized I was on TPU I think I actually said 'what the f---' out loud. Maybe next we can get some promotion for Zotac mining.

Was just about to post it.
Yeah, gonna have to agree, ad's are one thing(and I support them on TPU), but supporting a cryptocoin system that is literally breaking the back of an entire segment of the PC industry is VERY much the wrong message to say about TPU... This is a very poor choice and serious mistake.

If it wasn't the insanely eye burning orange I don't think anyone would have noticed. I mean, there have been ads in that same space before without anyone really noticing. Then again, what is the point of an ad if no one notices it? A balancing act all advertisers play.

I would love to get genuine, constructive feedback from you guys - and I would love to keep it on point. As you guys know, we are super focused on relevancy and a quality browsing experience.

From a content perspective of the wallpaper, do you guys see an issue? If so why? Does it boil down to negative feelings towards the offering based on "I don't like the ad or brand, because miners bought the card with my name on it and now this" (valid, but not really the advertiser's fault), or is there more?

Or is it the fact that it is bright orange and thus annoying to look at? So, would it be alright if the brand is kept from using bright colors in their wallpaper and goes for a dark base instead, but naturally communicates the same offering?

The problem isn't the color of the ads but what is being advertised. GPU mined cryptocoin right now is causing huge problems in many parts of the PC industry worldwide for the second time in almost as many years. This is unacceptable. TPU's active support of it with this advertising effort is equally unacceptable. It sends very much the wrong message to the community. For us visitors there is a simple solution, Adblock.

Before;
TPUwithCryptocoinAd.jpg

After;
TPUwithoutCryptocoinAd.jpg

Ah, much better.

TPU has been on my adblock whitelist for a long time, one of only a handful of sites who have earned that privilege. Today, that came to a swift end.

My problem is the mass glow of orange. The whole page is basically an ad, where as previously. it had been limited to a small window and a black/white background or ad. My beef isnt that its a crypto ad but that the colour blinds me every time i go to the front page. its very much inmyface advertising.

@rtwjunkie yeah, I don't have anyone on ignore, on any platform, not just here. It's always seemed pointless for various reasons.

Everyone: that nicehash advert doesn't bother me as it's gloriously static and I'm not gonna play the moral police on what can be advertised here. No other recent ads have bothered me either, so the ad blocker stays off on TPU. My only "problem" with it is that it's a ghastly yellow! Ad blocker on! :p

For me at least, It's definitely the mining aspect of the ad, its looks like you're (TPU) promoting cryptocurrency (which by running the ad, you in someway are really promoting it...) and I really don't understand why this being a bad thing should be even explained.

The sites posts reviews for GPU's, the site knows about all of the issues with GPU supply, miners even started mining on Laptops, good luck to the high end laptop market..
Its not like mining is something only individuals - us normal PC enthusiast/games do on our own pc, sure some do it and profit nicely, but majority of it is run by farms striping the market from components, meanwhile regular people - especially ones that use their PC to escape and unwind from their day to day routine and just life problems in general, are stuck looking at "out of stock" posts on every shop (or crazy high prices). Its even worse when the big GPU manufacturers sell directly to miners while blaming process node, covid and just about anything for the "supply issues". I have a decent GPU for now and even I was really pissed when I saw the ad, I'm sorry but it's bordering on laughing in people faces. Its worse when you take in to account that as a Hardware review site, you still should have access to GPU's, unlike the average consumer, like when rich people make fun of poor people for being poor....
It is also bad for the environment, wasting energy on nothing. (although you could also say that on Overclocking, so there's that..)

TBH, when I saw the ad, the first thing that came to mind was "they should just use all the GPU's they have to mine cryptocurrency instead of promoting this thing"

The colour is a bit out of theme with TPU.

The content is content, its tech related so there is no issue with advertising nicehash.

I dont get the hate at all. You dont support GPU mining? fine, dont click it.
I dont support thermaltake products, but i dont kick up a stink if they pay for an ad slot.

Gamers own GPUs, and they can be paid to mine with them. They arent gunna go buy new ones and cause stock shortages to use nicehash.

This is incredibly condescending to suggest the reason we wouldn't like this is a selfish one.

(valid, but not really the advertiser's fault),
This is deflection. I'm not blaming the advertiser for being an advertiser and advertising. I'm blaming whoever at TPU is responsible for allowing ads like this to be displayed.

The fact that it's even being asked why anyone would have a problem with this shows you are either incredibly tone deaf, you have no idea how to read a room, or you've been living under a rock for at least the past year, or possibly some combination of those.

It's not as simple as that. Miners are the largest cause of the current PC parts pricing and GPU shortage problems. February is usually a slow month for my shop, but it has NEVER been this slow. People are not making purchases because prices are so far out of whack that is literally out of most peoples affordability index. And shops like mine are not the only example of those in the industry being hit hard. I know for a fact the situation is no different down under so you not understanding it just means that you have not yet been exposed to the effects. This is swiftly becoming a worldwide crisis for whole sectors of industry.

TPU needs to take a stance against this problem, not support it with ads. Bad show, very bad indeed.

Then it would seem the problem has slipped passed you.

No... i spent $950 on a GTX 1080, and now $2600 on my 3090. I totally saw the price hike and the low stock and dealt with it.

I also am well aware that nicehash mining has NOTHING to do with these shortages, and that users mining at home has zero effect on stock levels... us gamers already HAVE the cards.

These GPU's are luxury items, not a neccesity. There is no reason for anyone to be mad about low stock levels.

People without 3xxx cards aren't real gamers, that I agree with.
