DS is Dual Screen and 3Ds is just a DS with 3D filtering.

Do you really care so much about what a thing is named?
I mean, you've got nintendo entertainment system, which in asia we call it family computer. So what's the difference? that's just a same chip in different shape.
Wii-U will still be such a console even they name it as WiiAwsome or WiiSuck.

It's misleading to call it the Wii U, because people will think it's an updated version of the Wii akin to the DSi or DS Lite. What they need to do is name it something not stupid, and focus on making it function properly. I've read rumors the Tablet only works like half the time, and all the developer units came with the tablets tethered, and Nintendo promising they would work correctly at launch.

Honestly, I think the Wii U's biggest issues are it's going to cost as much as the new Xbox, offer last gen graphics, and those tablet controllers are going to cost a **** ton.

Haven't been able to get into anything Nintendo since N64, they can call it whatever they want IMHO it's a toy for kid's. When i want to game i look to PC/PS3/Xbox

GameCube/Wii had decent games tho, Resident Evil Zero/Resident Evil Remake, Xenoblade Chronicles, Resident Evil 4 (tho it spawned on other platforms as well), Zelda Series etc.

The only really good GC games in my mind were Metroid Prime 1 & 2, Animal Crossing, and Pikmin. All the others that were good ended up being multi-platform. Wind Waker and even Twilight Princess were a definite decrease in quality compared to past Zelda titles, and Super Mario Sunshine was nowhere near as innovative as Mario 64.

I owned an N64, and there were plenty of games for it. Goldeneye, Diddykong, Banjo & Kazooie, Mario 64, (deep breath), and so many more.

Gamecube was... less interesting. Between the limited releases, and generally lower quality (looking at you Mario), I regretted buying the console. At least Metroid's triumphant return, and Super Smash Bros was worth it.

Wii. I'm torn. It's good that gaming has become more main stream, thanks in large part to the low entry cost and gimicky controls. At the same time, limited game releases and generally poor gaming experience (online existed, but was a joke), I don't think it was a step in the right direction for the medium. At the same time, Nintendo can't say it was a bad choice given the massive amount of money they made.

I hope the next gen wii provides dx11 at a minimum, and supports blu-ray discs. Finally having a decent console would be nice.


None of this is about the name though. In my opinion, anything can sell. Marketing managed to sell something that sounds like yes is French, and to pee in English. Do you think they couldn't sell the WiiU?

There are several quotes when Reggie and Iwata indicate that the system will probably have more hardcore userbase, obviously, thus the pricing will be "different" and the reason for name change is the confusion by the 3DS being too similar name.

Super Mario 3D Land Is definitely a great game despite missing the ability to punch n kick or jump kick. I remember in 64 doing 2 punches n kick then hit jump n kick at same time so it be like a 4 hit combo.

The only really good GC games in my mind were Metroid Prime 1 & 2.

Metroid Prime 1 was the only reason I bought a Gamecube. I finished it 10 years ago and am about to finish it again using the Dolphin emulator. My kids love it.

It is indeed a wonderful game. BTW, make sure you get the Charge beam before you oppose Flaahgra (or what's his name) @ Chozo Ruins because he is so challenging with only the Power Beam and like 10-15 missiles.

Wii Set the bar man.
Xbox and PS3 both flopped at initial release. Wii couldn't keep devices in stock.

Ps3 and Xbox both just did what they've always done, released a console with updated graphics hardware and thats about it. Wii innovated and created a new way to game, and not only did it work, the others COPIED their innovation and only then did they start to sell.

Kudos to Nintendo for taking some risks and actually innovating something new, unlike those boring idiots at Sony and MS who just give you the same crap year after year after year.

The Wii is just an overclocked GameCube with sloppy motion control tacked on. The graphics are a joke, alone with most of the games.

It only succeeded because Nintendo advertised it at your average joe who had no interest in gaming, along with families with young children. As it is, sales have bombed for the last three years and Nintendo is losing money.

Gamers were buying it left and right, granted most were disappointed because gamers have lost track of "gaming" and are now more interested in graphics.

Most of those 8bit graphics games are FAR more fun then today's high end graphic games, its just more pretty to look at.
There is a thread here discussing old games and people are still playing some of them. Graphics are really secondary to gameplay, or at least they should be.

Nintendo has been setting the bar for gaming since the 80s, credit where its due man.

The N64 was relegated to niche due to its obsolete storage media, Sony took over as the market leader with the PlayStation and now Microsoft has taken the lead with the Xbox 360. Sony hasn't innovated shit in gaming, except maybe putting them on bluray.
They just copied what was already there and made it a bit faster.

I do see the difference. But in a market like this, innovation isn't really necessary because we're mostly happy with improved graphics. I, and everyone I know for that matter, can't stand motion controls and would much rather have an "antiquated" controller in our hands.
Hell, when it comes to PC there's almost no innovation at all, but people still buy new systems and play all the latest games.

People just got bored with the Wii, plain and simple. It offered nothing outside of the motion control, and ultimately failed as a console. (note that I say it failed as a CONSOLE, and NOT a saleable item)

Just a note about how unpopular motion controls are, they just released kinnect for windows Feb 1 of this year...Total flop, everyone hates it and thats why they keep working hard to make it more functional and better.

Microsoft and Sony wanted to capitalise on the motion control craze. The PlayStation Move was a complete flop, but Kinect has moderate support. It's about money, not innovation.

Also, a console failing in this context has nothing to do with sales. I'm talking about the console itself. The Wii offered nothing over the GameCube except motion control, which I personally consider a detriment to every game I've played on the Wii. Twilight Princess, for example, is terrible to play on the Wii because the way Nintendo set up the motion control, most games interpret a movement as a button press and not true motion control. So I'm constantly running around and Link will get his sword out and attack the air just because the sensor bar misinterprets the tiniest twich of my wrist as an engagement of the motion systems.

TL;DR: the Wii failed as a console because it wasn't an improvement over the GameCube, just a GameCube with motion control. It didn't even have HD, when the previous Xbox could do it.

Gameboy always did pretty well for Nintendo, its a bit harsh to say SNES was the last relevant Nintendo system. N64 did okay it was Sega who was dying at the time.

Obsurd, Sony loses money on every system sold. They can't sell it above production cost, they only make money on the games they sell and SOE. Sony reported a 3.2 billion$ loss and they said it would have been much higher if not for SOE.

Nintendo reported just short of 1 billion profit, which was more then 60% less then projected so its considered a loss, but in reality, its still 1 billion in profit.

MS reported HUGE prophits and give the credit to "Xbox 360 with Kinnect".

If its about Money, sony should call it quits cause they just can't make money these days.
