Microsoft is now officially blocking the installation of Windows 7 and 8.1 updates on systems with Intel 7th Generation Core (a.k.a. Kaby Lake) and AMD Ryzen processors:

If your system has an Intel 6th Generation Core processor (a.k.a. Skylake), then only some of them will continue to be supported in Windows 7 and 8.1. 16 OEMs will support 7 and 8.1 on certain Skylake model machines.

You can read the full details on this Ars Technica article.

Hahahaha Windows 8.1 still in Mainstream support cycle. Yeah, M$ only does this for the good of the end user, right?

wherever you've read "Windows 7", you may now also add "/Windows 8.1" to the note, with regards to compatibility and updates, apparently.

That's a bitch. So user friendly of Microsoft to sell us a perpetual license that has built in obsolescence.

It's for your own good citizen! You should be rejoicing!
You no longer suffer from mean fascists and totalitarians. The neo-liberal way of thinking has come and saved you! Relish your freedom (to do what we tell you) and take advantage of it (to the extent we allow you to)! It's also very trendy, did you know!?
If you do not like it (we will mute you and call you a racist) you simply don't know what's best for you!

Join us while we change your history books, laws and regulations and erase any sense of individuality (it being the root of all things racist or fascist, as it breeds differentiation).
Or just call this hyperbole and entirely unrelated, even though it's really not; not if you think about it.

If not Microsoft, you will be forced to upgrade sooner or later anyway.

When software developers stop supporting older versions of Windows.
When hardware manufacturers stop developing drivers for old versions of Windows.

When Chrome killed XP support lots of people shouting and crying because XP is the best OS ever

Why did I get this on my sb-e and my amd a8 system? Win 10 would serve zero purpose for either.....

I am yet to understand why any enthusiast platform would adopt windows 10 as an operating system. Enjoy your overpowered WYSE terminal

I honestly have no idea what you mean. Windows 10 is a good OS, and is not a terminal.

EDIT: Tangent incoming, but yes it is true that modern computing has gone back to that model, and has been doing so for a long while now. I don't see that as a bad thing. Sure it's awesome to have massive computing/storage capabilities locally, but in most cases it is not worth it.

I don't think they will block it outside major OEM systems anyway, since they should have done it straight away. Probably no point in that now.

Most likely will be blocked via May patches again.

Yea Microsoft does seem to have a couple of problems with ending support for Skylakes, first they didn't threaten to end support on it until after the CPU was out and while Win7 Pro was still available, second they kept changing the date, for certain systems, originally it was supposed to be in July 2017, then they pushed it back to July 2018, now it is EOL, so it does seem to be up in the air as to when or if they will start blocking support for Skylakes.

I don't really agree with MS in this case. With that being said it makes sense from a business point of view. So I can respect it.

Windows 10 is a damn fine OS. Probably the best OS ever created IMO. Dunno why you would cling to Windows 7 or 8 at this point unless you have to due to legacy software you need to run. Even then Windows 10 pretty much does all those also.

Good info to have. They can't patch out my 7.1 cd, and as a general rule, I don't allow updates on my Windows computers, so I'd say I'd be fine one way or the other. However, I assume if it's not already done, the chip vendors will start hard coding (literally) their chips not to load up with Win 7 or 8 :(
