How is this such a toxic subject? The success of DOOM 2016?
Boy oh boy... I think y'all need to realize that these days success in gaming means you can hold a playerbase. Players flock from one game to another on a weekly basis, and it usually coincides with (big) content updates for the games in question. If players return, that means they are still interested in the franchise and that usually leads up to a sequel.
Player counts online fluctuate per game all the time. I've seen it happen for half a decade now. And its logical, because people like to do different things from time to time. The hardcore groups of players that dedicate themselves to a single game are far less prominent / much smaller these days.
