[WTB][US] Norton needs a cheap laptop for a friend in need (On Hold)

** Laptop search paused for now due to lack of funds- will resume the search as soon as able.

I have a friend who's down on his luck and the old laptop I gave him a year or so ago has finally died.

The old laptop was a Dell Inspiron 17R that I patched up after my son accidentally spilled a whole bottle of Diet Coke into it.

Looking for an expensive laptop in decent shape for him so he can use it for web browsing, general office, etc. Thinking a 15" with 4GB of ram and maybe a cpu in the Core2 Duo to Core i3 range.

I usually turn to Amazon and refurbished Dell's in these situations...

I have one like it at home, except with 8GB Ram, an i7 4c/8t and a 500GB HDD (would rather an SSD), it is used as a kids gaming laptop/domain tester for now. Bit it is a beast...those 2000-CPU's are still solid performers.

I'm sure there are better prices and deals...I just usually default to Dell for used/refurb'd cheap and reliable laptops. And I've worked with a lotta E6420's over the years...make great work laptops, VM lab machines, web browsers, light gamers (if you get the NV GPU...the one in mine is a low-end GT520 iirc...but it can play SupCom 2, StarCraft 2, Minecraft, Terraria, Star Wars Empire at War Gold, WH40K series, etc. just fine). I feel for $230 shipped, you can't really beat it for something that is built like a brick that can be worked hard for years to come.

Thanks! I typically go for those Dell refurbs myself but would like to avoid dealing with the occassional dud this time around. Betting a spare laptop in a forum members closet would be a better choice for my friends needs

I've bought 3 of the Refurbished laptops. One was perfect shape, the second the headphone jack was messed up. Don't even use it

Plus there are not activated for Windows. I installed a SSD and used the license on the back and it worked

The best one of the bunch is an HP ProBook 4420s, i3 M350, 4GB DDR3 1333, 320GB HDD, the battery still holds a charge. However, I'm having audio issues with it currently. The internal speakers don't work. But it has Win10 loaded on it right now, I was playing around with it a little. So I'm going to try to load Win7 on it tomorrow and see if the audio problem goes away. I'd probably want about $100 Shipped for it if I can get the audio working.

The 2nd best is an ASUS laptop, but the battery doesn't work in it, so I haven't powered it on to see the specs. Assuming it works other than the battery, I'd give that one away to you if you pay shipping on it. If you want this one, I can test it and dban the hard drive tomorrow.

So the HP Probook definitely is broken. The internal speakers are dead, but the headphone jack works perfectly. I found replacement internal speakers for sale online, but they are $40, more than I want to risk on a fix. It could be another problem other than the speakers themselves. However, I've got my eye on another broken Probook that is almost identical. If I can get that one for cheap I'll use the speakers from it to fix the one I already have, the broken one also has a faster processor, which I'll use in my Probook too. I'll know this weekend if I get the broken Probook. I'm not sure how long you can wait though, because this process will probably take a couple weeks.

I didn't have time to mess with the ASUS laptop at work yesterday, I just got too busy, sorry. But I can mess with it monday and get specs and make sure everything works.
