Bottleneck, its that simple. at 2.4GHz games sucks, at 3.2 they got better, and currently at 3.4 they are really getting there. I would say if 3.2GHz bottlenecks an 8800series card, a GTX 280 is easily 3.4 or higher for a clock speed.

Also on another note, This is kind of scary!

I was playing Crysis for 15 mins and my temps reached pretty damn high...

GTX 280 was 78-80c and my Q6600 was at 58-60c??? Wow that's hot??????

I really need to get better cooling in my case or I might end up with some issues

It's always good to have a fast processor to keep up with a fast GPU. The way I see it, if you're at 2.4GHz and you're gaming on a GTX 280, you're not feeding your 280 enough juice from your CPU to gain more FPS.

I leave my cpu at 2.4 now to save power and tbh it hasn't really changed my gaming experience at all. I did get 4ghz on a true 120 but it wasn't stable. Using HL lost coast as a benchmark won't show reasonable improvements but other games like crysis, company of heroes, far cry 2 etc.

easily. im still breaking my X3220 in and im hoping a 3.5GHz will be suffice, but i would put money down on a bottleneck.

My 8800GT card was bottlenecks all the way from 3.2GHz down, and came out on its own around 3.4Ghz.

I would say depending on your temperatures and voltage to try and squeeze something closer to 3.2 if not higher. Doing so should yield better FPS.

My GTX 280 runs around 77-80c under full load. clocked up i have the PCI at 108 instead of 100. fan speed 100%

i wouldnt call it a bottleneck for your card at all.

currently feeding my GTX295 is a Q6600 @ 3.2ghz and a pci-e 1.1 slot, and she seems no worse for wear than 3.6ghz and a pci-e 2.0 slot.

that is because it is a pci 1.1 slot. If i am correct a pci 1.1 slot is slowler then a pci 2 slot, and thus you wouldn't notice any difference.

yes and no. a pci-e 1.1 slot will not bottleneck a 1GB card. Pci-e1.1 has a lower badnwith transfer but its more than enough to feed the card. Only when a card really runs out of memory and there has to be alot of texture swapping - then a pcie-2.0 will be faster.

80C is pretty hot, if you send my your bios I can mod the fan profile so that it kicks into 100% after 60C, but stays quiet otherwise or I can show you how to do it in NiBiTor.

Also, you are getting bottlenecked by your 3.0Ghz quad - not badly but definitely at 158 FPS such as in lost coast... after 100+fps you will hit a hard CPU bottleneck in many games and benchmarks. If your goal is gaming - then its no issue. If you are benchmarking then you should OC higher.

60C is fine for a proc and very common for a quad. :toast:

Look, you're measuring your card's performance in a game that gets 100+ fps = old or new the GPU is not the problem. If you run Crysis at full tilt on an OC'd gtx 280 you would get more than double the performance of your old 8800GTS 640.

I am currently playing Crysis with everything set to very high and I ain't lagging at all yet. Level one has no lag issues what's so ever which is great!! MY 8800GTS 640mb could not handle Very high at all or it would lag big time!

No, you are not. The games like Crysis that are actually able to tax your gfx card would see maybe a frame or 2 difference. The games that don't tax your card very hard would see a pretty bug jump by clocking, but they are already running so fast that you wouldn't be able to see the difference unless you measured it with a program.
