Hi, I have an old ASUS k6IC with an Intel pentium t4400, pga478. I have disassembled it and I discovered that the cpu is upgradeable. I have found an intel core quad q9000, same socket. Do you think it’s gonna work if I swap the cpu?

If they are the same socket I don't see why it won't work so go for it.

The tdp of q9000 is 45w. I don’t know how much power can the brick handle (i’m Not at home) but it’s only 10w more then the t4400(35w). Maybe it will work?

Same socket, TDP and enough power isn't always enough. You have to make sure that the BIOS accepts the new CPU, especially when you're getting more cores on laptops.

It doesn't work like desktop motherboards in general, you have to search for upgrading this specific laptop model.

Here's a list of CPU's that the laptop was sold with, all 2 cores. It might work with other models as well tho.

It seems like it supports some CPU's with 1066 MHz bus, like the P8700.

Ok, ad spec sheet, the fastest cpu compatible will be the core 2 p8700. Is is a good upgrade (it was my first computer so this swap is only for curiosity)?

It all depends on what you pay for it. 10 year old premium laptop CPU's tend to cost too much for what they're worth, much more so than their desktop counterparts.

If they are the same socket I don't see why it won't work so go for it.

Oohh the older laptops were awful. IIRC there were like three socket compatible generations of chips which were not (or were, depending on the laptop) electrically compatible. Truly dark days.

Yeah sure, but I don't know what you're expecting out if it. I've used a T3100 laptop that didn't get better even with an SSD. On the other hand, my parents E8400 (3 GHz 2 core desktop counterpart) with an HDD is alright.

It’s only for fun, I know it won’t be a big upgrade. Now with the pentium it struggles even with manjaro kde

Just do it then. If you like it, add a $20 SSD as well afterwards. (Not the other way around.)

My parents desktop (4 GB RAM) runs W10 just fine.

An SSD might not be viable if the laptop has an IDE drive.

99% it will not work. I would only go for a T or P series CPU. I upgraded my Celeron 575 to a Core 2 Duo T8300 and from what I remember none of the similar laptops worked with a desktop CPU like the Q6600 and the chances are your will not either.

EDIT: From the laptops' webpage on processor support:

"Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor P8700/P8600/T6600/T5900/T5870 : 2.53 GHz - 2.0 GHz, ;
Intel® Pentium® Dual Core Processor T4300 : 2.1 GHz
Intel® Celeron® Processor T3100/ T3000 : 1.9 GHz - 1.8 GHz, "
