NVIDIA 461.09 Driver on a 3090 and the secret memory PerfCap

I wonder what driver this person was using. The new driver 461.09 therm. caps quicker (honestly I prefer this than getting a higher hash rate and the card/pads failing). Could the older higher limit be cooking sub-par thermal pads?

'Occasional Thermal Throttling would show in HWInfo' - How occasionally? Either way this person was running the memory right at the limit. I run my fans 10% over the thermal cap for this reason i.e + 1200mem / 70% fan / 120 hash --> I could run this at 60% fan but run 70% - I never ever thermal cap any more. For the first 3 days I was continuously thermal throttling and the backplate was so hot I could not touch it for more than a second. This goes back to possibly cooking the sub par pads.

I'm starting to think the 'perf cap therm throttle' is a warning of severe accelerated failure. It's like running a vega hotspot 105-110 degrees, it can do it for a while but you really want to sort that out quickly.

I've been mining 24/7 since the 5th of Jan so I would have seen this by now. However, I doubt these pads will last more than a year.

Could also be factory lottery, some are better than others.

Btw, Hwinfo released a new build that includes memory temps for Nvidia 30 series. Looks like the thermal perfcap for memory is 110°C. I am probably being over sensitive to the thermal limit, but I don't want to be running at max temp if I don't have to, so looking into getting a cheap cooler to set on top of my 3090 FE. Thinking this one should help at least a bit. I am doing ethereum mining and doing everything possible to keep perfcap to pwr instead of thrm.

PC is running at 58°C, 74% power, +500 memory, -300 core, right around 1000mhz switching between thrm / pwr pretty consistently.

I am super new to GPU performance / overclocking but if I am hitting thrm perfcap am I actually hurting the GPU because it's at max temp? Or is the thrm perfcap set specifically because running at that temp is safe for the GPU for extended amounts of time?

Cooler I am going to try out..

I can confirm that the new HWiNFO does indeed show the memory temperature. I can also confirm that the perfcap happens at 110C. While mining at STOCK speeds on my Eagle OC, I sit at 110 the entire time.

I have seen various numbers around the web on what the max temperature of GDDR6X is. It seems like the manufacturer would know best on the matter, this is why I only believe this number:

  • Op. Temp. 0C to +95C

So why is the 3090 programmed with a hard limit of 110 and not 95? I have no idea. I guess because it would not perform well enough to be a $1500+ card if they capped it at 95F. It is really amazing that a stock-cooled 3090 can literally boil water on the memory, and NVIDIA thinks that is ok. I will be testing a new heatsink this weekend and report back.

I don't know for defo but isn't junction temp diff from memory temp? Either way your warranty covers you - even if you overclock (most brands). As a vega owner the HBM2 had a different max temp to the junction temp (hotspot) - but the HBM was right next to the core so who knows whats going on in this case.

Downclocked GDDR6X can go to higher temps ? maybe 19gbs is different vs 21gbs?

Are we just guinea pigs for new tech - Yes I think so!:)

Oh, haha. Then why is the bios happy to let the VRAM run at 102-104C? If I decrease the Memory OC, the bios actually slows downs the fans to let the memory operate at 102-104C.

Anyone know what temps the GDDR6 on the 3060Ti runs at? Thinking of getting an FE to mine alongside the 3080

Hello

I have one of the slow zotac 3090 ;)....mining eth 24/7 with nearly 120..(drops when i use the pc)..driver 461.09.........memory oc with firestorm tool 10724mhz (+1222) - GPU-Z says Memory clock: 1340,5

Maybe i can push more - but i dont want it till waterblock is arrived. bios stock

edit: i am a noob - but noticed, when i use Afterburner, I have much problems with throtteling

edit2: VRAM Temp checked - while mining 100°C

I just ran Cyberpunk with a minus 500mhz underclock. I left the ram at stock.
Heres my stats from afterburner. I streamed at 80fps 1440p DLLS Auto. Everything maxed out barring RTX which is set to medium.
check out the quality of the stream.
Tommorow I'm going to see what kind of performance I can get using a 600mhz underclock.

Hi M8. Any news about the heat sink. ??? I would be happy to hear your result. TIA

My HWINFO memory junction temps are 88c-90c with a 3090 KPE. +1200 mem. It takes maxed out mem but it's not worth a few extra MHS.
