Nvidia 8800GTS Overclocking

Hi Guys, Looking fo a little advice re the above.

My 8800GTS is now watercooled and on stock values is running at about 40'c under full load, so there now seems to be a bit of room for a nice OC.

So far I have been using the Nvidia software (Nvidia Control Panel) to adjust the core and memory speeds. However it seems to reset itself everytime I turn the machine off.

What other software, if any, do poeple use to overclock these cards and what would be a realistic speed to aim for?

Try Rivatuner.

You can't get the OC to survive a boot by clocking via softaware. To get the OC stick you'd need to edit/flash the VGA bios.

btw, how do you cool the voltage regulators and the daughter core on the card? Fullcover block or sinks?

I am using the EK Full Cover Block, the nForce chip temperature runs about 4-8'c higher than the core.

Thanks I will have a look at Rivatuner, flashing the VGA Bios - as simpe as a mobo bios or more complex?

just as simple adjust the settings with nibitor and from there you just flash and go with NVflash i think is what its called

try googling flashing 8800GTS

that should yield some results

Flashing a VGA bios is just as easy as with mobos.

Rivatuner is the best way to go..also you should put your fan on 100%..you can do that too in Rivatuner. then set it for windows start up..the fans will come on 100%...

thats noisy
this is a better way
set the 2d fans to 25-50% the low power 3d fans to 45-75% and the high power 3d fans to 70-100%

Start by getting your card running the way it was meant to......I have the BIOS flash for it if you want it?

EDIT: actually, you have the OC2 edition, what are the stock speeds?

PS: why havent you tried ATiTool yet?

@ HooketStreet - Yeah if you have the bios flash that would be much appriciated. As for the speeds, at stock they are 580/850

@ Largon - Thanks for the link, Unfortunatly I don t have a floppy disk drive - I assume from that huide this is going to cause problems?

You can just OC with RivaTuner it has the option to enable the OC after a restart.

OK so I have downloaded RivaTuner and installed. Went into System Tweeks under Driver Settings/Customize and adjusted the core speed from 580 to 600, checked the box to apply settings at windows startup. tested the speed, applied and restarted.

But the core speed is still 580? I assume I am missed something obvious here, but have never o/c'd a graphics card before, nor used rivatuner.

Please point me in the right direction.

it should look something like this...

Make sure startup settings says it's gonna start up at the clocks you want. You have to press save then apply.

Thats exactly what I have done, and the screen is the same as your screenshot? I am using v2.02 of RivaTuner if that makes any difference.

Well not sure what the problem is then? Im using v2.01 I know I had a problem with vista and I had to disable UAC but your using xp pro right?

I would give it another try set your clocks press save under the "apply at startup" setting then press apply then ok then ok again and the program should close. If it asks you to restart in the program don't just restart the normal way.

Well I have tried several times now, even uninstalled and reinstalled both Nvidia drivers and RivaTuner but no luck.

What about powerstrip, I have used that in the past?

Are you saving your overclock to a custom profile? I dont think it will apply it at startup if not :toast:

I have tried both, no luck - ATITool will be my next try. Why is nothing ever simple ay?

well ATITool worked a treat, now running 600/1000 with a 2-4'c increase in temps. Havent pushed any further just yet but already seeing a 20-30FPS increase on BF2142.

How far do you think I should go with the core speed?

I can get up to 675 on air so try around 675-700

dont just jump to high clocks get there slowly, every card is different and yours may not clcok as good as mello newf's. use the ati tool overclocking guide.

atm Im not even going to oc my card.. well I'll have to see how it fairs in a 2vrs2 COH game with everything maxed!

Nice clock newf, someday I may just put my system on water.. I was just looking at it and it will cost me like $600 shipped lol... my cpu wont clock very high stable with stock volts..

Edit: move up like 10mhz each test run and test for like 5 mins doing the core 1st.. when you hit a wall/see artifacts down clock some till no artifacts.. that will give you your max core clock with whatever volts your using. than run stock core and work on the mem, play safe take your time.

you can flash an ati card with a usb stick with some flash tool you load onto the usb stick and the original bios... and modded bios. I had to do this to fix a bad clock flash I had done on my card... but I forget what the flah tool was called? atiflash! not atiwinflash.
