I think they've named Fermi as the 4xx so that to use the 3xx series as a rename for the 2xx series. Or whatever...

And did I read well, there's not going to be any DX11 on the 4xx or am I mixing things up? :/

They have to have DX11 now, as it would be suicidal not to. DX11 is definitely the future and ATI already have it DX11, as you know.

I believe the DX11 Unigine demo/benchmark was shown running on a prototype Fermi at CES. Not 100% sure, so I'm happy to stand corrected if not. :toast:

So when will they start renaming the GTX to this new series, and release it again as the next best thing since sliced bread to screw over some unknowing customers, only so when you complain fanbois can flame you and you can be banned on the Nvidia forums?

It's just a change in naming scheme with gt4xx coming out on gt3xx schedule along side the gt3xx so the two tiers are separated by series for the first time. Stupid naming scheme but performance is more important than naming scheme, unless we are all a bunch of idiots.

A lot of people out there don't follow the naming schemes, so I think we are fine with the name game but there are many out there who is going to get confused.

Its hard to guard against uninformed customers. Marketing alone creates confusion intentionally. Just look at current marketing from both ATi and Nvidia. I think we shouldn't care if the average consumer likes to be uninformed before purchasing. There is nothing you can do to stop it. Sure, naming things consistently would make it easier on the consumer but they should always read reviews before purchasing anyway which would negate a naming scheme confusion.

Before Nvidia named it GT4XX it was known internally as GF100. GT3XX is a name made up by the public.

Silly us thinking a numerical naming scheme might be in some kind of numerical order.

Interesting naming, does make sense because mobile Fermi is 3xxx so desktop is 4xxx. On the naming Nvidia is going with 470 and 480. The Nvidia naming is on pair with ATI naming e.g ATI 57xx and 58xx = Nvidia 470 and 480, just a coincidence. ;)

Similar naming

The naming is similar, indicating that Nvidia believes that its products 47x and 48x are on pair with ATI 57xx and 58xx generation and performance wise a standard practice in IT industry. We have to wait and see the benchmarks. The ATI and Nvidia are separate companies they just like to fight it out with press statments, product hyped specs, similar naming, benchmarks and other ways. ;)

At the moment the most powerful GPU with DirectX 11 ever made is ATI Evergreen Radeon HD 5870 Cypress XT, the most powerful variant is the 5970=a dual 5870 with reduced memory and GPU clocks. The Fermi 470 and 480 are launching on 10th of March. ;)

So they put a 5970 on a custom PCM and call it "Ares". The Mars took some engineering work to get around thermals, this....
