Oh, thanks God, I was starting to think I was the only one that could understand that requirement. That remembered the amperage asked for previous cards and could make an educated guess of the actual requirements for this card...

Even my old 8800GT asked for 35A if I'm not mistaken (or 38A not sure) so 42A didn't really look like a lot in comparison.

EDIT: Check this too

http://forums.techpowerup.com/showthread.php?p=1788697#post1788697

GTX470 has 2 six pin connectors and looks a little bit shorter than a GTX260 (might be the perspective, in any case it's not longer). So

1- it's nowhere near the rumored 300w.

2- it doesn't look like it needs much more heat dissipation than last gen.

I'm starting to smell the BS of past rumors...

300W was for the 480, not the 470

I don't think so. AFAIK the GTX480 has never been shown. At least that's what has always been claimed. The cards showing the demos were the GTX470 (at the time GTX460) and it was those cards' power consumption that was reported, suposedly.

It doesn't really matter anyway. I highly doubt that the GTX480 will consume 300W and require 2 8-pin connectors when the GTX470 consumes less than 225w . That's too much of a difference. I'm not saying it's imposible, but it's very unlikely. Usually (historically if you prefer) the high-end derivative of a chip has a better perf/watt than the lower-end one, because both have a big start overhead. Look at GTX260, GTX275 and GTX285 for example: http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/ASUS/EAH_5830_DirectCu/29.html

GTX 480 twice as fast as 5870?

Nvidia's GTX 480 ends up faster than HD 5870 in some cases and according to Nvidia it is the fastest GPU on the market, or to be precise, it will be faster than the HD 5870 once it finally shows up.

We must note that we can confirm that it does happen in some cases, as Nvidia is still keeping the performance numbers for itself as it wants to keep AMD at its toes. Nvidia reps are pretty sure that AMD is still tapping in dark when it comes to Fermi. The GTX 480 is faster in Unigine Heaven benchmark in some situations where actual GPU power does matter.

All this is pretty good news for Nvidia, but it still has to launch the card, while AMD has been selling its HD 5000 series cards for months now.

This baby will sell...

my worrie is whats with skipping the whole GXT 3xx numbering and going to GTX 4xx ,
Why you worried, there is now a lot of old cards has been rebadged to GT3XX numbering, even worse in mobile segment. They do this to quiet down people who say there is GT3XX series that been rebadged from G92-based cores.

so the GTX480 is 8x6 pin like that box said.

I wonder if the rumor of the heatsink being modular is also true, after looking at the wierd mounting where 4 are screws go int the heatsink itself itself and 4 go in the base I think it might be and the heatsink is definitely not permanantly connected to the base. if it is that would be a massive buying point for me

I'm going to post a picture of a dog farting, or death star plans and say, actually, nothing. Just post a freaking picture and wait for people to comment on my fermi snaps. Why are sections blacked out on the above pics? Why would you black them out as they are obviously not approved by NVidia. If you're posting pics of a cards PCB, leave in the details to prove it's what you say it is.
I saw pics of a Fermi based card at CeBit from http://www.tcmagazine.com/comments.php?shownews=32988&catid=2 and Kains pics dont have the 6 pin connectors in the same place.
TOO MANY UNIDENTIFIED pictures people......

going by the memory alone, that was the 470 this seems to be the 480, they're not the same card.

Pics posted by Csokis are from here and there is also a die shot here.

Good find mate, maybe put a link to the source next time, lot less crap with that ;)

As for the black bars:
The Nvidia card is marked in various ways, so pictures of the cards to various manufacturers can be traced. To prevent this, some features of the card obscured.

Oh, no Volterra, gooooood. Hate those buggers (to cool). Core (IHS) looks tiny and heatsink seems to be HDT :-o Overall looks very simple to cool, compared to GT200. edit: except those 6 tiny things next to VRM mosfets?

Hey does no-one care about the performance?! Beating a 5870 by double in anything should be of massive interest to everyone. Performance is what it's all about, no?

Last I heard The Fermi is twice as fast as the competing ATI parts when it comes to tessellation alone. Heaven is pretty much a Tessellation tech demo and it was the only situation where such a performance gap was noticed. In other cases, like actual games, The Fermi is much slower and in some, actually falls behind the red cards.
I'm tired of rumors and speculation though. Can't wait until we see verifiable numbers on these things.

Benchmark Scores Its fast. Enough.
Yes in a optomized synthetic benchmark that is focused on one specific feature any card will beat the other, many times by a large margin, but in a game.......

I would hold on any performance judgement until the card is released. The main reason for me is that Fermi is a very different GPU, but at the same time it is supposed to run under Nvidia's Unified Driver Model. This IMO means two things at the same time:

1- Fermi should be able to function with any driver with some driver tweaking, like any previous card. But...
2- Unlike previous models, it needs especial drivers in order to use it's 4 full pipelines, because Fermi is the first GPU to be able to output more than one triangle per clock (that is 4). We are not talking about optimization, it goes beyond that, the card will not perform nearly as fast with any driver that is not especifically designed to split the work into 4 full pipelines. At least that's what I think. I don't think that the ability to use the 4 GPC is hard coded into the silicon.

And now, my question is: all those supposed leaked benchmarks that people talk about are with specific and final Fermi drivers or tweaked old drivers? And if so where did they got them from? Getting a Fermi sample is easier, partners need the reference card, but don't need the final drivers until it's time to bundle it with the card. Well they just recently received the hardware, but did it come with final drivers already? There's too much we don't know about Fermi and how it works to make any judgement based on leaked performance figures.

I didn't say it was faster in everything (notice the bit I put in bold...) Read the article and you'll see. It's not very long.
