I wish you never said that. I always dismissed the 5770 because I thought my 4890 was faster :(

A single 4890 is faster than the 5770. TWO 5770 will eat a 4890 for lunch.

Thank you very much for this awesome review W1z. I am also one of those people who would wait any amount of time to see your finished review. I always go here first before anywhere on the net for the accurate and done right review. I hope you continue to do your awesome reviews.

I also see it as the one that is more accurate and right vs all others. I might not even notice if you scramble up the results for a April fools day joke and still may post and link it to others! :D

That said, even though i usually am a slight fanboi, this does not bode well for us all according to the results. I was really hoping nvidia would come through on this one so we could see competition once again.

i had 5770Cf before the 5870 i have.. the 5770's were faster.. but thats okay they wont be faster than 2x5870 in about 4-5 months

I can second that. My mate has two 5770s and they beat my 5870. Strange that ATI let that blow by and considering I think it's cheaper to buy two 5770s than to buy a single 5870...

try that game at a resolution higher than what it states. It's just something I noticed about that chart that was posted by MailMan.

I'm kinda happy I found a 4870x2 and 4850x2 those together should beat a pair of 480's and I don't need to rent a 12v generator to get my pc to turn on. 320w under load is a wee bit ridiculous hell I remember when I had a fsp 250w add on psu that can't even power one of these cards :shadedshu after so much delay this card should have wiped the floor new drivers or not the 5970x2 performed better 5870 threw a good stab at it and for less money and power consumption I think its a better card hell with an oc the 5870 may actually beat the 480 oc'd. I just think my alnost year old 4870x2 should have been destroyed by both the 5870 and gtx480 not kept up in some games beat them in others that is stupid. Maybe nvidia will fix fermi as it seems the 480 is already a failed version of a bigger card with its core partially shut down. I assume that means rumors of fab issues were true and still exist. Maybe a smaller less complicated die would help 1b more transistors than ati might be an issue. Oh well gtx490 with a fully unlocked gpu should do well against the 5970 doubt it will beat it when both are oc'd but they will do well against each other.

Oh on a lighter not fsp sells a 2000w psu that will be perfect for sli with 3 of these cards
Our 4870x2 draws even more power, performs worse, and has less features. 480 is the better card.

As for the heat issues, I want to know why nVidia has chosen to use an IHS. I bet it would run a good bit cooler with a naked die. Tho power draw would still be insane, at least temps would be helped.

Here is something a few people know:

The new GTX480 and 470 are a DISASTER if you try to run 2 monitor at once. In order to operate, the cards are switching to the 3D freqs all the time, including in desktop idle mode!!!!!! That way they get to 90C and up to max power consumption!!!! nvidia, WTF???? EPIC FAIL!!!!!!!

Yes, why we're still getting copy/paste titles and results from engines that are several years old now, and end up with reviews where only one game(Crysis, no surprises there) makes the cards actually stress - I don't know, but at least we did get something relevant and useful this time around ... :

http://tpucdn.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_480_Fermi/images/metro_2033_1920_1200.gif http://tpucdn.com/reviews/NVIDIA/GeForce_GTX_480_Fermi/images/metro_2033_2560_1600.gif

EDIT: @Mailman

It's a hell of a lot more relevant than ten+ games that run at 100+fps and tell us absolutely nothing about minimum frame rates. At least Metro 2033 is a current game, with current tech that the card(s) can make use of - and as I previously said, GTX performance will probably be on par with current 5XXX cards, but have the edge in some of the newer features from DX11. Which means, it's a single card solution that's competitive and stronger in the future proof department.

no, that's not what i mean, i mean Drift2, battle forge, stalker CoP, and AVP 3 have built in DX 11 path why don't wizz use that ?

and i really wish if wizz can add BC2 for bench, it's really great game:rockout:

funniest shit i ever read

All that power makes for one seriously hot graphics card. Do not be fooled by the 97 degree load temperature. While this is the maximum temperature that we recorded, the fan was spinning so fast things started sliding across my desk towards the test system. The GeForce GTX 480 was truly deafening when running our full load test.

Letting the card sit at the Windows 7 desktop for 20 minutes after stress testing saw the temperature only drop to 65 degrees. When it came time to remove the GeForce GTX 480 from our test system I had to wear a pair of gloves to avoid any possible burns or dropping the extremely hot graphics card. The PCI Express power cables were amazingly soft from all the heat that had been thrown at them.

In short the GeForce GTX 480 is around 11% hotter than the Radeon HD 5870 under load and a whopping 71% or 27 degrees hotter at idle.

It's been like that with GT200 too. I'm with full 3D clocks as I write, because I have LCD TV on the other DVI. They said they'll look into it over a year ago and nothing has happened.

How ever, with my card temps don't rise, idling happily 40C 24/7 with those clocks.

Only thing you can do is disable "extend desktop to this display" then you'll get 2D clocks. NVIDIA won't fix it, it will be like that for ever. If it's an issue for you don't buy Fermi. (or you could just plug a 8x00 card and use second monitor from that)

And here's a link to the issue with earlier cards. If they can make a 3 billion transistor card, surely they can add "use 2D clocks always" force to drivers.

That has to be a simple driver mess up. I'm sure they will fix that.

I agree, that is fail.I just read a couple of pages of that review, and he even said he had to wear gloves to take it out so as not to burn his hands.

It might be better than the 5870 in some games but,i run two monitors all the time so feck that i would not even consider getting a gtx480 because of this reason. It is a hot running inefficient waste of space.

The guy even said that after one day with it in his machine, his computer room was noticeably hotter than the rest of his house. This is ok if you live in iceland maybe but for someone who livees in a warmer climate would not be very good at all.

Nice review W1zzard,screw all the whinging twats, your reviews have always been thourough and informative.Thank you.:respect:

I think that whole glove thing was a joke? If not I would hate to see this thing run in my home state. Florida.
