NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3090 benchmarks show about 9% to 10% improvement over RTX 3080

NVIDIA recently released the GeForce RTX 3070, 3080 and 3090. The series has three cards for now, two of which 3080 and 3090 were supposed to be already available for sale (Botched Launch by scalpers and resellers and limited supply). The flagship RTX 3090 is yet to be out, but now a leaked benchmarks showcasing the performance of the card.

The benchmarks and video review shared on BiliBili, With the current software, the results showed RTX 3090 to have a performance that is about 9% to 10% higher than the RTX 3080.


The test rig had an Intel Core i9-10900K clocked at 5 GHz, paired with 32 GB of RAM at 4133 MHz. Storage used was the Galax HOF PRO M.2 1TB SSD. Take a look at the benchmark video:

Nah, that's just how it works. The 3090 has 20% more SMs (and lower clocks) so theoretically it can be at most 20% faster but of course it doesn't scale linearly, 10% is pretty much spot on for what you'd expect.

Apparently Nvidia markets the 3090 as being kind of for productivity but not really because "8K gaming" is plastered all over it, there is even a dedicated chapter for it in the technical white paper. We know the 3090 is hardly any faster than the 3080 so what else could it be that qualifies this thing as being made for 8K gaming ? I'll give you a hint : 24 > 10.

All they can really do is unlock the extra 256 shaders, other than that the RTX3090 is pretty well maxed out.

I can see about a 15-20fps performance increase in games @4k if i upgrade. I probably will get a 3090, it will be a sad day as i will have to say goodbye to my sweetheart Volta, such a shame dlss doesnt function on volta(let me know if you know of a work around). No other gpu has ever treated me so well for so long. I wonder if i'll be able to pick a 3090 up on the 27th? Which version of the card do you think its worth getting. It looks like there are aftermarket OC cards available @launch. Just not many.

Seems like the 24GB GDDR6X is chucking too much juice, the 3090's core freq is running around 100mhz lower than the 3080 at 100% TDP.
With 12GB less VRAM the 3090 can probably widen the gap with more power going to the GPU.
Oh well I had better sit this launch out and wait for 3080 Ti with 12GB

This really is no different than the 1080 ti and titan scenario, you were paying for the extra vram mostly, the 3090 is meant for other stuff besides gaming I suspect. i believe Jensen even said the new flagship was the 3080. that implies the 3090 is something else altogether in my book

Both RTX 3080 (320 bit) and RTX 3090 (384 bit) are based on GA-102 ASIC design.

I prefer RTX 3080 Ti with 20GB VRAM. I'm NOT going to buy yet another 10 GB to 11 GB VRAM equipped GPU.

Turing's RTX 2080 Ti and RTX 2080 uses different TU-102 and TU-104 ASIC designs respectively.

All these cards being released are all cpu limited.
The minor gains you are seeing, are because of that.

10900k is a fantastic gaming cpu. i don't believe it's bottlenecking 3090 GPU output or performance

@newtekie1 All they have to do to make RTX 3090 pointless for gamers is to release fully unlocked core with 12GB VRAM at 800-1k USD range. It may happen only if there will be a RDNA2 capable of keeping up with it (perf. wise).

Good luck with that . Availability will be significantly worse than 3080.

Samsung yields are not that great, I'm becoming pretty sure that Nvidia would like to sell as many cards as possible before Navi and the consoles, it's just that they don't have them.

And I saw people buying 3080s for 1500USD on eBay, they might as well buy that extra 10% of performance + extra 14GB of RAM instead of giving money to scalpers.
