After almost two years, Nvidia launched a presentation where it wanted to educate Analysts that R680, Radeon HD 3870 X2 is a bad, bad thing.

Our colleague Charlie from The Inquirer has posted an interesting mail that Nvidia has sent to financial analysts and you can read this fun part http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/01/30/nvidia-tries-snow-financial.

However, the reality is somewhat different. This is the first time in two years that Nvidia did such a thing, as Radeon 3870 X2 is better and faster than anything that Nvidia has on the market. Nvidia will catch up and beat ATI with Geforce 9800 GX2 but it doesn’t look like Nvidia will ship this part before early March. If it executes, Nvidia will ship its card a month after ATI and even then we were warned that the card will be much hotter than ATI's and that it won’t be widely available.

This doesn’t mean that ATI has won the war but it got closer to Nvidia than ever in the last two years and this got Nvidians scared.

The real battle is the next generation, codenamed GT200 and R700, as it is not clear who wins this round. The second currently unknown fact is who will be the first to market as this certainly counts. Both Nvidia and ATI’s chip are scheduled for early second half of 2008 but we’ve seen some delays before.

ATI is currently the only profitable and healthy part of AMD which bleeds cash on the CPU side and the graphics group of AMD is being treated quite well, as these guys are doing better than expected. Nvidia and Intel on the other hand are AMD’s technology partners, at least on paper, but in reality they are fearsome competition.

Shape up Nvidia, the last thing you want is to lose to ATI now, when it is critically important to win in this hostile market.

that inquirer article is spot on! tbh i dont want nvidia to die neither do i want ati to die..if theres one thing i hate its fanboys.

we need both of these companies to form a competitive market where we (the consumer) actually get bang for buck and we see a market thats always moving forwards

i highly doubt theyre shytting their pants or anything, 8800GT sli is good, the 9800GX2 should be about the same, as the X2 was to the 3870.

then theres always this 55nm monster ive been hearing rumors about with 384sp's and 1024 megs of 512bit memory, and even if ATi gets the upper hand who cares, apart from fanboys, people will always buy what they want to buy, and given the market over the past few years, nvidia will always be able to sell their current lineup, as does ATi.

these companies are understanding that no matter how you compare, its all about the price : performance ratio. price em rite, and they will sell.

fair enough theyve been ahead and gotten lazy, now all they have to do is pull the finger out and get these products theyre talking out out to the consumer.

i dont think the word scared is right, maybe worried about losing profits, maybe anxious about the situation, but nobody, and i mean nobody should ever be scared of a video card.

driver optimization will always be an issue with any dual card setup, theyre trading blows at the moment.

This is the only sentence in that inquirer article that I agree with.

Mr Hara is an idiot for posting his mailing list publicly.

I'm sure that this kind of messages are common to any company: Intel, AMD, IBM, whatever...
But they don't make the mistake of making them public.

It doesn't say anything that isn't true either, though he interprets data to their benefit. What can I say, common bussiness. Move along.

Hmmm I'm an avid AMD/ATI supporter and I definitely wouldn't say that ATI is in a position to scare Nvidia. The architecture is damn good though and hopefully through the next generation we will start to see the effect of their forward thinking design!

I'm with Wolf, both companies are great. Almost all my past VGA cards was from ATi and I was very happy with the performance, later I tried Nvidia and guess what????, THE SAME!!, Nvidia card's performs very well too.

i am happy for ati, they worked there asses off to produce some great gpu's over the past 2 yrs and its paying off, they have built something that is scaring Nvidia and for that i commend them, both are great companies and i use cards from both camps both make quality products, maybe now nividia will lower their prices a bit to be a bit more competitive:D now if only AMD could get something going with their processors;)

Aphex this has got to be the most full of bullshit article I've ever read. How can a journalist be so one sided, narrow minded and plain stupid? I mean what has Nvidia done to him? What does he have against that company? Oh and as far as I know the best selling graphics cards are from Nvidia and they just made a 150mil aquisition . What has ATI done recently, besides being bought out? Sometimes this fanboysm just makes me sick. :shadedshu

hahaha look at the charts on hwbot the 8800ultra is killed by the 3870 X2

http://hwbot.org/hardware.compare.do?type=gpu&id=1043_1&id=1236_1&id=1255_1&id=1183_1&id=1279_1

haha i love how it cost so much less $4xx vs $6xx
Oh my dear god!

Almost 1½ year old design looses to a two generation newer, total of two fab nodes smaller chip - sorry - dual chip solution in a synthetic benchmark! What's even more impressive is that in games HD3870X2 manages to beat 8800Ultra (again, 1½ old design) by a whopping 5% while consuming 50W more power!

nvidiots cant do much better right now... theyre running scared, esp like how they got lazy and decided to do a dual card like ati while at slaved over the r700 (which is 6 mths ahead of schedule)

"heights of great men reached and kept were not attained by sudden flight, but they while their companions slept were upward toiling through the night"

NV had no reason to go dual other than the fact that ATI was doing it as well ...

Oh and why at one point even people on this site were selling their brand new 2900's and buying the 8800GT?

And which one of those cards performs better then their counterparts? 8800GT/GS ???

it just kinda depends on where you get your bench marks from, i can show you where ati is better and where nvidia is better, do you really want me to start posting sites? because im not sure how many others threads where this specfic topic has poped up, and people have showed benches where one card performs better then the other, i personally cant tell teh difference in game between an 8800 and a 2900 there are games where one performs better than the other, and vise versa

Anyways I don't know how people can read or trust such a shitty site like that one. Here is an excerpt from one of their articles: "THE LATEST DRIVER out from the guys in Satan Clara, dubbed ForceWare"

I mean come on, how fucking lame is that? Nvidia is not the devil. WTF??? How more biased can you get? And I am supposed to believe anything those guys are saying about Nvidia. As far as I know they made that email up.
