I need to get a cooler for my 8500gt so I can use it as a dedicted physx card. It gets to at least 86c on the ATiTool scan for artifacts test.

you'll need to be on the latest beta drivers for the video card, as well as the physx driver/software in page 1 of this thread.

So let me get this right....If I hook up my GTX260 to my 28inch monitor and put in my GTS 512MB into another PCI-E slot and plug that into my 20inch Samsung, keep the sammy switched off, my GTS will become a dedicated PhysX GPU?

i was thinking of putting the 8800gts 320 to the second analog input on my monitor and see how it goes. im just afraid my PSU cant handle these two cards

anyways tatty post results here if u decide to test it out.

It says :

In SLI mode, each GPU in your system shares the physics processing and graphics workload evenly. This is the default mode when SLI is enabled in the ForceWare control panel

In multi-GPU mode, one GPU handles all graphics duties, while the second card is solely responsible for tackling all physics commands. Under this mode end users can mix and match different cards. For instance, someone who purchased a GeForce 8800 GT last year can run this card for physics, and then pick up a brand new GeForce GTX 280 to run as the primary graphics card for gaming. An SLI motherboard isn’t required for this mode either, both SLI and non-SLI motherboards are supported.

One limitation of this mode under Vista is that a second monitor must be attached to run PhysX on the secondary GPU, and you must extend the Vista desktop onto this secondary monitor. According to NVIDIA this limitation is related to the Windows Vista display driver model (WDDM). However, the same limitation does not exist in Windows XP. (so glad my monitor has two inputs )

Yes but according to that, in XP you dont need to connect to a 2nd monitor?

im trying to do that as we speak. i hooked up my old 8800gts. it says found new hardware bla bla bla. so do i need to install forceware drivers again??

Wait, so you can do an SLI combo of two GTX 260 GPUs, and then add a third nVidia GPU for PhysX? (like 8800GS or 9600GSO)

2xGTX260(SLI) + 1x8800GS(PhysX) ... This is doable?

yes it should work but problem is that i cant get nvidia physx software to regognize my old G80 card + newest nvidia drivers wont work with it

Could be just early drivers, buggy and all. I would wait until end of next month, once they go through several driver revisions.

If SLI+PhysX are doable, then I can finally put my quad-SLI motherboard to use.

well im getting there. i managed to install the drivers that were posted at the beginning of the thread, and im now waiting for the damned "rapid"share to give me the physx drivers

Your doing well....keep us posted! I am even impressed that it's recognising two different cards and enabling the multi GPU's outside of SLi!!

That link is dead! So how is it coming and does CP see 2 cards and does PhysicsX see a dedicated 2nd GPU? Ohhhh and di you need the 2nd monitor presuming you are working in XP?

so i managed to install the new physics drivers after installing WHQL candidate drivers at the beginning of this thread. PHYSX lets me now select between 260GTX or 8800gts as physics card

no cables were needed in XP. I will try the same with VISTA today if i have time.

Still need to play some graw to fully test how its working

BTW: latest WHQL drivers from nvidia site dosent allow 2 cards being used at the same time. In devices the other card shows disabled.

Nice, so you think when you select the one in PhysicsX, the other actually is doing all the other work?

And thats verified using two different cards in 2 slots in XP without the 2nd monitor plugged in was what I was getting at.....so in effect Hybrid graphics without SLi?

the second monitor thing is related mostly to vista, XP has been verified to work without needing that. (however, we dont know about other OS's such as server 2003, XP64 etc)

Well I am impressed! My GTX260 will arrive Wednesday and then I will test by hooking up my GTS 512MB in one of the other PCI-E slots to see if it will work for me....... Just glad I got a 750W PSU a few weeks ago! the GTX alone uses 2 6pins.

it seems fun - i get a massive FPS boost on the UT3 physx maps using this (15FPS average to 60+ on the heatray map with the physx hail)

The only downside is playing through the campaign it caused random game freezes loading/ending levels, unsure what the cause was but unticking hardware physx in the game made the problem go away.
