It seems that NVIDIA is planning another GeForce 8800 GTS SKU with more stream processors. This is to widen the performance gap between the upcoming 8800 GT and 8800 GTS as 8800 GT is coming too close and it might hurt the sales of 8800 GTS. The number of stream processors will be increased from 96 to 112 while the rest of the specs like 500MHz/800MHz core/mem clock, 320-bit memory interface, and 320MB or 640MB GDDR3 flavors will remain unchanged. There is also an interesting side note that NVIDIA will not be doing any formal launch activities, press announcements, website updates, or any other marketing around this new SKU. Partners can conduct their own marketing activities.

That's interesting.

112 SPs but the same power requirement.

It must be here to compete with the R600.

Thats going to be very confusing to buyers. How can you differentiate between an 8800GTS box and a 8800 GTS box with the extra processing power? Same size card, same cooler, same box.

They should have called it the 8805 or 8800+.

Time for Joe Consumer to be ripped off by old 8800GTS is the retail channel being sold on the same shelves as the new 8800GTS.

AT A MINIMUM, they need a sticker on the side of the box so you know CLEARLY what you are buying. A serial code with G80-100 or G80-101 is not very helpful to anyone but Sherlock Holmes.

PS. 112 is a strange number. 16 more than 96. But 32 more, ie 128, seems to be a more "natural" number and would give a more noticeable bump in performance.

OR IS THE THING DESIGNED FOR 128, but due to fab deficiences, they need to turn off the defective units?

OR NEXT MONTH, will there be ANOTHER 8800GTS with 128 processors, also in the same packaging?

yep sounds like another 9800pro with 128 or 256 bit memory controller fiasco

This is how it should have been from the beginning. It's weird that there is same performance cards with different memory sizes, bigger memory one should have also faster/better memory or more stream processors like here.

Im trying to figure out how its hurting the sales of the previous GPU. Simply, discontinue that one and offer this one instead. Its a smarter decision, will save them money and make them money at the same time.

So you have seen the packaging and can say it will be identical to the normal 8800GTS cards?

I didn't think so...

This is like a kick in the :nutkick: for the current 8800GTS owners, with the extra shaders. Unless Nvidia has a way to unlock those few extra shaders of the current owners. :slap:

Its not a kick in the nuts, it is the nature of the industry. As time moves on new and better products will come out. The 8800GTS has been out for almost a year! It is about time for a product to come out to replace it, and we all knew it wasn't going to take long because we were all expecting die shrinks within the year.

Can anyone tell me how much of a performance boost you get with these extra shaders? Would it be something like a 3-5% performance increase? Or more?

The 8800GTS with 96 shaders will be discontinued when the 8800GT comes out.

So the series will go

512MB 8800GT w. 96 shaders < 640MB 8800GTS w. 112 shaders < 768MB 8800GTX w. 128 shaders

It makes perfect sense really :)
