With its GeForce RTX 30-series "Ampere" graphics cards on the horizon, NVIDIA has reportedly taken the first steps toward discontinuing popular SKUs in its current RTX 20-series graphics cards. Chinese publication ITHome reports that several premium RTX 20-series SKUs, which include the RTX 2070, RTX 2070 Super, RTX 2080 Super, and the RTX 2080 Ti, are on the chopping block, meaning that NVIDIA partners are placing the last orders with upstream suppliers for parts that make up their graphics cards based on these GPUs.

It is a slow process toward product discontinuation from this point, which usually takes 6-9 months, as the market is left to soak up leftover inventory. Another juicy bit of information from the ITHome report is NVIDIA allegedly guiding its partners to increase prices of its current-gen high-end graphics cards in response to a renewal in interest in crypto-currency, which could drive up demand for graphics cards. NVIDIA is expected to announce its GeForce RTX 30-series on September 17, 2020.

All the more reason not to get an overpriced card that is going to get replaced. Considering that Nvidia only focuses on bringing new features and improvements to latest gen cards, the increase in price for an outgoing gen GPU just makes it less palatable.

I am not surprise that crypto currency mining will pick up due to (1) low energy prices, and (2) high value of crypto currency. But if there is anything we learned from the last crypto currency fueled GPU price hikes, anything that goes up will come down. Even if the graphic card makers are now more prepared and thus, unlikely to go overboard with supply like they did the last time, they may not be able to avoid the fact that people will start dumping mining cards cheap, which will affect their sales, and will require a price cut to make buying a new card more attractive.

Nvidia we're not dependent upon mining sales...also Nvidia renew the mining boom so we can jack up prices!

If Nvidia is this confident, I suspect they know they can already beat Big Navi fairly easily. I hope Lisa Su proves me wrong, cause if we don't get some competition soon in gpu market with stable drivers... Nvidia is going to empty all of our wallets.

That's too accurate this is Nvidia 101 bs at it's finest. I hate to say it, but Nvidia basically abandoned gamer's a long time ago. I mean they'll still sell us stuff not necessarily what we're most interested in and at a heavy premium. I feel like Nvidia's turned into the new Intel at milking consumers and has now surpassed them at it.

traded used ex-mining 1080Ti Trio for new 2070S Trio, now sell it to a miner near the end.
Too perfect of a plan.

So nvidia "guiding" partners to increase price due to mining? In another news this thing is being reported differently.
Another Chinese website MyDrivers reported last week that NVIDIA has sent out an internal notice to their Add-in-Card partners (AICs). According to the information, NVIDIA expects an increase in demand for their graphics cards as the interest in cryptocurrency mining is growing.

but what else do you expect from our gossip girl news editor.more nvidia "raising prices" cause it clicks

What are you talking about? AMD IS competing! It's why NVidia is ramping out the goods. Navi is going to be big. Microsoft and Sony have chosen carefully to include it into their next gen consoles. So the PC market is going to have a lot to consider. It's a great time in the PC market and it's going to get better.

kinda.
half way up the ladder.
tu104 and up - no amd skus compete.I think you should know that.

they cant beat 1080Ti ffs,nor do they offer any new features over that card. This is a march 17 card that comes out 10% on top of amd's fastest Navi gpu.

rdna2 has a 1.5x gap to close to nvidia's 2 year old cards.and so far we've not heard anything from amd except for "we're going to cater for enthusiasts" talk

nvidia "ramping up" cause of amd ? give me a break. is rdna the reason they made 2080Ti a 4300 cuda 750mm monster ? is navi 2 the reason why they're making 3000 on samsung 10nm ? get real.

I think AMD have been quite tight lipped about the performance of Big Navi, so it is hard to tell how fast it will perform. It is not that Nvidia is confident that they can beat Big Navi, but rather the lack of competition from AMD now on the high end. But if Nvidia increase price, and AMD is able to fill that supply void, then it may benefit AMD instead.

Riiiight.

They are increasing their prices because the next generation is probably awfully uninteresting and not very compelling. So this way, it will look "better".

Yeah but they're not far off. I'm excluding the 2080ti because while it is in a higher class of GPU, it's also prohibitively expensive. Mainstream VS Mainstream, AMD is giving NVidia serious competition.
exclude the middle sku they're 25% behind and now they're even ! with a 106.on performance but not features.being a node lower.

If they are indeed phasing out everything above 2060 Super that goes to show what they plan to launch and that 3060 or whatever the 2060 successor ends up being called will come no sooner than next year.

Funny how we went from the initial sticker shock to "the popular SKU series".
If you recall Turing dies are pushing the maximum size allowable by the process, you're not surprised Nvidia is moving to discontinue these parts asap.

Crypto mining doesn't use standard GPUs for some time now, and no the crypto currency isn't high value at all, it can't even keep half the pick value it had...

Surely it's totally not to make 3xxx card pricing look better.

Or that it would cost way "moar" than 2060.

If we take that 320W as a hint, chuckle.
Biggest of the big Navi is only 505mm2.
NVs has bigger chips in works (alleged Samsung chip is beyond 600mm2).

It will be like with current gen Navi, AMD will have helluva competitive product, but kids will see it as a loss, since there will be much bigger (and helluva expensive) NV chip that is faster, chuckle.

so what you're saying is amd's 7nm+ 505mm will lose to nvidia's 10nm 630mm and that'll be a win for amd but kids dont know.

Where are those high value of crypto ?Should be 10-20x times higher in order to start another mining round.
